03:11a few things before I go further. The first thing. Our family does not maintain an English lawn. Old-order
03:21Amish families generally do not keep ornamental turf yards. The space around our farmhouse is working
03:28space, not display space. So when I say the Amish method for fertilizing costs $0, I am not specifically
03:37talking about feeding a grass lawn. I am talking about the broader soil-building tradition that feeds
03:45gardens, fields, pastures, and yes, lawns. The same closed-loop methods that grow our corn, our hay,
03:55our tomatoes, and our wheat will grow your suburban grass lawn just as well, often better than the $60
04:03bag of synthetic fertilizer. The second thing. I want to be honest about the time scale. The Amish
04:12closed-loop fertility system is slow. It does not green a lawn in three days the way synthetic
04:19ammonium-based fertilizer does. It builds soil over months and years. By the second or third season,
04:27your soil will be richer, more drought-resistant, more disease-resistant, and more productive than any
04:35synthetic fertilizer-fed lawn ever was. But you need the patience to wait through the first year
04:41while the soil biology rebuilds itself. The third thing. Not all Amish families are completely off
04:50synthetic fertilizer. Honest reality. Some Old Order Amish farmers in some communities do use limited
04:59amounts of conventional fertilizer when conditions require it. The closed-loop tradition I am about to
05:06walk you through is the standard, authentic Pennsylvania Dutch approach, the one practiced
05:11by my family and most of the families I know in Lancaster County. But it is not a universal Amish
05:19absolute. I want to give you the methods plainly, not paint a picture that pretends every Amish farm
05:26is purest about it. I am Elias Yoder. I am Amish and I farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
05:34Today I am going to walk you through the seven verified soil building methods Pennsylvania Dutch farm
05:41families have used for over 200 years to maintain rich, productive soil without ever buying a bag of
05:50synthetic fertilizer. The materials, the techniques, the timing and the honest scope on what each method
05:58delivers. Quick word before I go further. The old methods my family uses, there is more of it than fits
06:06in any one video. I gathered the whole of it into a book at EliasYoder.com. The book is the
06:15long version.
06:16If you want it, it is there. I will not mention it again. Now, the seven methods, plainly.
06:25Method one, composted livestock manure. This is the foundation of the entire system. Every animal on the
06:34farm produces manure. Every bit of that manure goes back to the soil. Dairy cattle manure is the gold
06:41standard, providing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and trace minerals in nearly
06:50perfect ratios. Horse manure adds excellent organic matter. Chicken manure is the most nitrogen rich,
06:59used carefully because it is strong. Pig manure works well after proper composting.
07:05The honest method. Manure is not spread fresh on growing crops. Fresh manure burns plants and can
07:15carry pathogens. The correct technique is composting. Stack the manure with carbon-rich material like straw
07:23or sawdust in a ratio of about 25 parts carbon to one part nitrogen. Turn the pile every two to
07:32three
07:32weeks. The pile heats up to about 150 degrees Fahrenheit through bacterial action, which kills weed seeds
07:41and pathogens. After 6 to 12 weeks, the finished compost is dark, crumbly, sweet-smelling, and ready to spread.
07:51The application rate. A typical Amish farm spreads 10 to 15 tons of composted manure per acre per year,
08:01applied either in the fall before the ground freezes or in early spring before planting. For a suburban lawn,
08:09the equivalent is about one cubic yard of finished compost per 1,000 square feet spread as a thin top
08:18dressing.
08:19The honest scope. You need a source of livestock manure. If you do not own animals, you can buy composted
08:28manure
08:28from a local farm for $10 to $20 per cubic yard or from a garden center for $5 to $10
08:35per 40-pound bag.
08:37Costs more than zero if you do not produce your own, but still dramatically cheaper than synthetic
08:44fertilizer and build soil instead of depleting it. Method 2. Wood ash from the cook stove.
08:52For Old Order Amish families, every farmhouse has a wood-burning cook stove that heats the kitchen and
08:59cooks the meals from October through April. Six months of daily wood-burning produces a steady supply of wood ash.
09:09That ash is not thrown away. It goes on to the fields and gardens.
09:14The chemistry. Wood ash contains about 5% to 7% potassium, 3% to 5% calcium, and trace
09:23amounts of magnesium,
09:25phosphorus, and other minerals. Potassium is the third major plant nutrient after nitrogen and phosphorus.
09:33It strengthens cell walls, improves disease resistance, and helps plants handle drought stress.
09:40The calcium content also raises soil pH slowly, which is useful in eastern Pennsylvania where natural soils
09:49trend slightly acidic. The honest application rate. 5 to 10 pounds of wood ash per 100 square feet,
09:58spread thin, and worked into the top inch of soil. Do not apply more than this in a single season
10:05because
10:06too much ash raises pH excessively. Do not apply to alkaline soils at all. Hardwood ash is preferred over
10:15softwood ash because hardwood produces more concentrated mineral content. The honest scope. Only useful if you
10:24burn wood for heat or cooking. Most suburban homeowners do not have access to significant quantities of wood ash.
10:32If you have a fireplace or wood stove, save the ash. If not, this method does not apply to your
10:39situation,
10:40and you can skip it. Method 3. Kitchen Scrap Composting. Every kitchen produces scraps.
10:49Vegetable peels, fruit cores, eggshells, coffee grounds, tea bags, stale bread, garden waste, fallen leaves.
10:59Pennsylvania Dutch families have composted these scraps for generations, building rich black humus
11:05that goes back to the kitchen garden. The honest method. The same composting principle as livestock manure,
11:12but on a smaller scale. Build a compost pile with three parts brown carbon material, dried leaves,
11:20straw, shredded paper, sawdust, to one part green nitrogen material, kitchen scraps, grass clippings,
11:28fresh garden waste. Turn the pile every two weeks. After two to four months, you have finished compost ready
11:35to spread. The application rate. Spread finished compost as a top dressing about one quarter to one half inch
11:43deep on garden beds, twice per year. For a lawn, use the same one cubic yard per 1,000 square
11:51feet rule,
11:52twice per year. The honest scope. A two-person household produces about one cubic yard of finished
11:59compost per year from kitchen scraps alone. Useful for a kitchen garden or a few raised beds. Not
12:06enough volume to feed a large suburban lawn entirely, but a meaningful contribution combined with other
12:12methods. Method four. Cover crops plowed under. This is the method most American homeowners have completely
12:20forgotten exists, and it is one of the most powerful soil building tools in the entire system.
12:25The principle. After the main crop is harvested in the fall, the field is not left bare. Instead,
12:33a cover crop is planted immediately, growing through the winter and early spring. In late spring,
12:39before the cover crop sets seed, it is mowed down and plowed into the soil. The cover crop adds organic
12:45matter, fixes atmospheric nitrogen into the soil through symbiotic bacteria in its roots, prevents erosion
12:52through the winter, suppresses weeds, and feeds soil microbes when it decomposes. The verified cover
12:59crops Pennsylvania Dutch farmers use. Crimson clover for high nitrogen fixation, planted in early fall.
13:07Winter rye for excellent winter root growth and weed suppression. Buckwheat for fast summer biomass and
13:13phosphorus mobilization. Alfalfa for deep root tap roots that bring up minerals from subsoil.
13:20Hairy vetch combined with rye for the highest nitrogen fixation rate of any common cover crop combination.
13:27The honest application for a homeowner. Even a small lawn can benefit from this. In late summer,
13:34scatter winter rye seed across the lawn at about one pound per one thousand square feet, water it in,
13:40and let it grow through fall and winter alongside the dormant grass. In spring, mow the rye low before it
13:47sets
13:47seed. The rye roots decay and feed the soil microbes, adding nitrogen and organic matter to the grass area.
13:55The honest scope. Cover crops work brilliantly on agricultural fields and large gardens.
14:01For a typical suburban lawn, the benefit is smaller but still real. The principle is unchanged. Free nitrogen
14:10from the air. Free organic matter from plant biomass. Free soil structure improvement. No fertilizer purchase
14:17required. Method 5. Crop rotation with legume integration. This is the strategic side of the
14:25closed loop system. The principle is simple. Different plants take different nutrients from the soil and put
14:32different things back. By rotating what grows in each field every year, the soil never gets depleted of any
14:38single nutrient. And pests and diseases that target specific crops cannot build up year after year.
14:45The standard Pennsylvania Dutch rotation. Year 1. A nitrogen demanding crop like corn or tomatoes.
14:53Year 2. A legume like clover, alfalfa, beans, or peas that fixes nitrogen from the air back into the soil
15:01through its root nodules. Year 3. A small grain like wheat, oats, or barley that uses moderate nitrogen
15:09and adds extensive root biomass to the soil. Year 4. Return to a nitrogen demanding crop or begin again with
15:17the legume. The honest principle. Legumes are the magic. Through symbiotic bacteria called rhizobia,
15:26living in the root nodules of legume plants, atmospheric nitrogen gas is converted into plant-available
15:34nitrogen compounds in the soil. A single season of alfalfa or clover can fix 100 to 200 pounds of
15:42nitrogen per acre, depending on conditions. That is enough nitrogen to grow a full corn crop the
15:49following year without buying a single bag of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. The honest application for a
15:57homeowner. Plant a section of your garden in clover or beans each year, rotating which section gets the
16:04legume. For a lawn, consider clover as a beneficial component of the grass mix rather than a weed to be
16:11killed. White clover in a lawn fixes nitrogen, stays green in drought, attracts pollinators, and reduces
16:20fertilizer needs by half or more. Pennsylvania Dutch families considered clover a desirable component
16:27of pasture grass for exactly this reason. If you want to keep the next ones coming through your feed,

16:41and
16:41seven plus the honest cost math and the closing instructions, plainly. Method six. Bone meal and other
16:50animal byproducts. When livestock are processed at the end of their useful life, no part of the animal is
16:58wasted. The Pennsylvania Dutch tradition uses bones, blood, hooves, hides, and offal as soil amendments
17:06rather than throwing them away. The chemistry. Bone meal is rich in phosphorus and calcium, providing
17:14about 15% phosphorus by weight and 24% calcium. Phosphorus is essential for root development, flower
17:22formation, and fruit production. Blood meal is high in nitrogen, about 12% by weight, available quickly
17:30to plants. Fish meal, when available, provides balanced nitrogen and phosphorus with trace minerals
17:37from the ocean. Feather meal is slow-release nitrogen for long-term feeding. The honest application. Bone meal is
17:47added to soil at planting time, especially for transplants and bulbs that benefit from strong
17:52root development. About one tablespoon per planting hole mixed into the soil at the bottom. Blood meal is
18:00spread at about one pound per 100 square feet on growing crops, watered in, used when fast nitrogen is
18:07needed. The honest scope. Most American homeowners do not slaughter their own livestock. Bone meal and blood meal
18:15are available at garden centers for about ten to fifteen dollars per five pound bag, lasting two to three
18:22years for a typical small garden. Still vastly cheaper than synthetic fertilizer and represents authentic
18:30animal by-product fertility rather than industrial chemistry. Method seven. Local lime and limestone.
18:39This is the slowest and most patient soil amendment in the system, but for many soils east of the Mississippi
18:45River, it is essential. The principle. Most natural soils in eastern Pennsylvania, the mid-atlantic,
18:53the northeast, and the Ohio Valley, trend slightly acidic over time due to rainfall patterns. Acidic soil makes
19:01nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium less available to plants regardless of how much fertilizer is applied.
19:08Adding ground limestone, called agricultural lime or ag lime, slowly raises soil pH
19:15back to the slightly acidic to neutral range where plants absorb nutrients most efficiently.
19:21The honest method. Spread crushed agricultural limestone at about 50 pounds per 1,000 square feet on soil
19:30that tests below pH 6.0. Apply in fall or early spring so the lime has time to react with
19:37the soil before
19:38planting season. The reaction is slow, taking six to twelve months to fully take effect.
19:44The honest cost. Limestone from a local quarry costs about 10 to 20 dollars per 50 pound bag at a
19:53feed
19:53store or farm supply. One bag treats 1,000 square feet for two to three years. The cheapest soil amendment

20:10actually acidic. Get a soil test from your county extension office for about 10 to 15 dollars before applying lime.
20:19If your pH is already at 6.5 or above, lime application can hurt rather than help. Test first, amend

20:33A typical American homeowner spends $200 to $400 per year on lawn fertilizer plus additional money on soil
20:42conditioners, pH adjusters, iron supplements, and specialty seasonal treatments. Total annual spend on yard
20:50chemistry. Often $300 to $600 per year for one suburban lawn. The Amish closed loop method adapted for a homeowner.

22:16There is no money in the lawn care industry in teaching folks that the Pennsylvania-Dutch
22:21closed-loop fertility system has been producing the richest agricultural soil in America for over
22:28200 years, using nothing but manure, compost, cover crops, wood ash, and patience. There is a great deal
22:37of money in selling Americans $60 bags of premium synthetic lawn food every spring, every fall, every year,
22:47forever. So the simple old method sits quiet on farm fields like ours, while American suburban families
22:55spend an average of $300 a year per household to feed grass that will be deeper, greener,
23:02and healthier on the closed-loop method than it ever was on the synthetic bag.
