00:00In the summer of 2023, a Ukrainian infantry sergeant named Andriy crossed 400 meters of open field in 11 minutes,
00:09and nobody on the other side fired a single shot.
00:13That's not because the Russian position was empty.
00:16It was manned, dug in, wired with trip flares, covered by machine guns that had killed men in that same
00:23field for a year.
00:26Andriy just didn't give them a reason to pull the trigger.
00:28By the time anyone in that trench realized there was a Ukrainian soldier 8 meters from the firing step,
00:35it was already too late to stop him.
00:38This is the part of the war you don't see in the drone clips.
00:43Everyone's watched the FPV footage by now, the little quadcopter chasing a running man through a tree line,

00:57It's also almost never the moment that actually decides whether a line falls.

01:12media.
01:13So how do you cross the most heavily surveilled battlefield in modern history,
01:19walk up to a fortified position, built and reinforced over months, and not get seen doing it?
01:27To answer that, you have to start with what the Russian defense actually looks like from the inside.
01:33Because most of what people assume about storming a trench comes from WWI movies, and none of it applies anymore.
01:42A modern Russian defensive line in Ukraine isn't really a trench, not in the 1916 sense, it's a system.
01:51There's a forward line of fighting positions, usually shallow, sometimes just scrapes in the tree line, meant to absorb the
01:59first contact and buy time.
02:01Behind that, 30 to 80 metres back sits the real defensive belt, connected trenches with overhead cover, dugouts rated to
02:11survive a mortar round, and firing points staggered so no single Ukrainian assault angle covers more than one or two
02:19positions at a time.
02:21And above all of it, watching is a drone.
02:26That's the piece that changed everything.
02:29A defending unit today doesn't need a soldier staring across no man's land through binoculars.
02:34It has a Mavic, or a Zala, orbiting at 300 metres, feeding a live picture to a dugout with a
02:42monitor and a radio.
02:43Anything that moves in daylight across open ground gets seen in seconds.
02:49Anything that gets seen gets a mortar fire mission called on it inside two minutes.
02:55That's the real wall Ukrainian infantry has to get through.
02:59Not barbed wire, not the machine gun, the camera.
03:04So the first rule of a modern assault is one that sounds almost too simple to be the whole answer.
03:10You don't beat the drone by moving fast.
03:13You beat it by not existing on its screen at all.
03:18Ukrainian assault groups, the ones actually clearing forward positions, are small.
03:23Not the platoon-sized waves you'd picture.
03:26Usually four to eight men, sometimes just a pair, moving as one of several simultaneous elements rather than a single
03:33column.
03:35Smaller groups have a smaller heat signature, a smaller sound footprint and, critically, they don't need to bunch up to
03:42move,
03:43which is the single fastest way to get flagged by an operator watching a thermal feed at two in the
03:49morning.
03:49And that's the second piece.
03:52Night is not a bonus condition anymore.
03:55It's the operating window.
03:57Most serious assaults happen in the hours before dawn, when a lot of cheaper Russian reconnaissance drones either can't fly
04:05or can't see well.
04:06When thermal optics on both sides start to struggle with ground that's held the day's heat unevenly.
04:12And when a tired defender, two hours into his watch, is the least likely to catch a shape moving along
04:19a hedgerow he's stared at for six months.
04:22Fog, rain, even heavy overcast get chosen deliberately.
04:27Not because the weather is dramatic, but because it grounds the small commercial drones that would otherwise be watching every
04:34metre of that approach.
04:36Before any of that movement happens though, there's a phase almost nobody talks about.
04:41And it's the one that actually decides whether the assault works.
04:45Days, sometimes weeks, of watching.
04:49Ukrainian units doing this seriously will run their own reconnaissance drones over a target position dozens of times, building what
04:57amounts to a routine map of the enemy's habits.

06:53where a drone operator's screen would otherwise light up like a road flare.
06:58The actual assault on the position, when it finally happens, is built to be short.
07:04Grenades into the forward fighting positions first, thrown from as close as the approach allowed,
07:10because a Ukrainian soldier who has to stand up and expose himself to throw from 30 metres has already lost
07:18the advantage of everything that came before.
07:21Then the clear, trench section by trench section, close enough that supporting fire from either side becomes almost impossible to
07:29call in without hitting your own men,
07:32which is itself a form of protection.
07:35Combat at that range, inside a Russian trench that's now also full of Ukrainian soldiers, tends to end in minutes,
07:43not hours.
07:44And this is where the war looks less like an infantry story and more like an artillery one, because none
07:51of it happens in isolation.
07:53While the assault group is crossing that open ground, Ukrainian mortar and artillery crews are often already firing,
08:01not necessarily at the position being assaulted, but at the ones on either side of it,
08:06the neighbouring dugouts that would otherwise send reinforcements or open flanking fire the moment the first grenade goes off.
08:14It's called suppression, and it's less about killing and more about making sure that for the 90 seconds an assault
08:20team is exposed,
08:22everyone who could shoot at them is too busy staying alive to do it.
08:26Drone teams overhead are doing the same job in real time, watching for exactly that reinforcement and calling artillery onto
08:34it the second it moves.
08:35There's another layer to this that rarely makes it into the footage,
08:39and it's arguably as important as the drones or the darkness – electronic warfare.
08:44Both sides now carry portable jammers designed to knock the other side's small reconnaissance drones out of the sky.
08:52And a well-timed jamming window – five or ten minutes where the defenders' overhead eyes just stop transmitting –
09:00can be worth more to an assault group than an extra squad of riflemen.
09:05The catch is that jamming isn't free either.
09:09Turn on a jammer and you're broadcasting your own position to anyone listening for exactly that kind of signal.
09:15So units have to weigh blinding the defence against announcing that something is about to happen.
09:22Get that trade wrong, and you've traded one kind of exposure for another.
09:28Engineers usually move first, or alongside the lead element, because wire and mines are the one obstacle drone footage can
09:36map but can't remove.
09:38A cleared lane through a minefield is marked not with flags, since a flag is just another thing a drone
09:45can photograph and report,
09:47but with something a soldier can feel or see at ground level in the dark.
09:53A strip of tape low to the earth, a line of small stones, a route memorised in daylight and walked
10:01blind at night.
10:02A mistake here doesn't just cost the man who steps wrong, it costs the silence the whole approach depended on.
10:11Because a mine going off at 3am tells every position within earshot exactly where to start shooting.
10:19Deception plays its own part too.
10:21A push against one section of line is often paired with a decoy, a smaller group making noise or even
10:28just radio traffic designed to sound like an assault against a completely different position a kilometre away.
10:35The goal isn't to fool the enemy forever, it's to buy confusion for the five or six minutes that actually
10:43matter.
10:43The ones where the real assault group is crossing the last open stretch and needs every gun on the other
10:50side aimed somewhere else.
10:53None of the men doing this are picked at random either.
10:56Assault groups tend to draw from soldiers who've already survived a rotation or two on the defensive side of the
11:02line.
11:02The logic being that someone who's spent months watching how drones hunt for movement understands exactly what not to do
11:10when he's the one being hunted.
11:13What they carry in reflects the same obsession with staying unseen more than it reflects firepower.
11:20Rifles, yes, but also wire cutters, spare batteries for a handheld jammer, extra grenades and almost always a personal radio
11:31set to a frequency the whole element rehearsed before they ever left the tree line.
11:35Because once the assault starts, shouting across open ground is the fastest way to end it early.
11:43Rehearsal matters more than most people assume.
11:46Units that get the chance will walk the exact route or a stand-in for it days beforehand, timing each
11:53bound against a watch.
11:55Because a plan that takes 11 minutes on paper and 14 in practice is a plan that gets someone killed
12:02in the gap.
12:03None of this is guaranteed to work and it's worth saying plainly that a lot of these assaults fail or
12:10succeed at a cost that doesn't make it into any recruitment video.
12:14A drone spots abound at the wrong moment.
12:17A defender who wasn't supposed to be awake is awake.
12:21The dead ground someone mapped nine days ago has a new machine gun position nobody knew about because the unit
12:28holding that trench rotated out three days earlier.
12:32Soldiers who've done this more than once describe the last 50 metres as the part that never gets easier, no
12:39matter how good the planning was.
12:41Because that's the stretch where preparation runs out and it just comes down to whether the man in front of
12:46you sees you before you get to him.
12:48And taking the trench is only ever the first half of the problem.
12:53A position that's been captured has to be held, usually within minutes, against exactly the kind of drone-directed artillery
13:00fire that made the approach so dangerous in the first place.
13:04Russian units on the receiving end of a lost position will often already have that trench's coordinates pre-registered from
13:11months of holding it themselves.
13:13Which means the fire can start landing almost as fast as the Ukrainian flag goes up.
13:19So part of what an assault group carries in is engineering material, sandbags, timber, anything to turn a position built
13:27to face one direction into one that can survive being shelled from the direction it just came from.
13:33Some positions taken this way get shelled back into rubble within the hour and have to be abandoned. Others hold
13:40for months.
13:41There's rarely a way to know in advance which one you're getting.
13:45What's changed the calculus over the past two years isn't courage. Both sides have plenty of that and it was
13:52never the scarce resource.
13:54What changed is that a fortified position can no longer hide behind distance and wire the way it could in
14:01any war before this one,
14:03because there's always a camera somewhere overhead on both sides watching.
14:10The infantry didn't get braver, they got better at disappearing.
14:15Andrei's unit took that position in under 15 minutes from the first bound to the last Russian soldier surrendering out
14:22of the dugout at the end of the trench.
14:24Nine days of watching for 15 minutes of exposure. That ratio, more than anything else, is the actual shape of
14:33this kind of warfare now.
14:34A shape that has almost nothing to do with the adrenaline the footage sells and almost everything to do with
14:41sitting still and paying attention longer than the other side does.
14:46Most of it is patience. The part you'd film is almost an afterthought.
14:52Whether that math is sustainable is the question underneath all of it, and it's worth sitting with for a second
14:59before the next video auto-plays.
15:02Nine days of watching to buy 15 minutes of ground. Multiply that across every contested line from Kharkiv to the
15:11south, thousands of trenches, thousands of small groups doing this same patient invisible work one position at a time.
15:18And you start to understand why a front line that looks frozen on a map can still be moving, metre
15:24by metre, at a cost that never quite makes it into the footage.
15:29Whether a war fought at that pace is one either side can sustain for another year, or five, is a
15:36different question. Neither side has answered it yet.
15:39The war is a different type of fight against, and I think that's more than a certain type of fight
15:39against an accident.
