On October 21, 1978, 20-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich was flying over Australia's Bass Strait when he reported a high-speed metallic object hovering above his aircraft.
His final words to Melbourne flight control were: "It is hovering and it's not an aircraft..." followed by 17 seconds of unidentifiable metallic screeching sounds before complete radio silence. Neither Valentich nor his plane was ever found.
