The Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana, is promoted as one of America’s most haunted homes. Its best-known ghost story centers on Chloe, an enslaved woman said to have poisoned members of the Woodruff family. But surviving historical records do not support key parts of that legend: no known record names Chloe, and one daughter said to have died survived into adulthood. The property’s documented history—including the 1871 killing of William Winter—remains unsettling enough.
