Two life-size buffalo puppets roam into New York's Times Square  Two life-size buffalo puppets ran in circles in New York's Times Square on Tuesday (September 15), with puppeteers bringing the animals to life through movements that made them appear to breathe. The pair offered a preview of "Return of the Buffalo: Tatanka Owe Akupi," a public art project created by Amir Nizar Zuabi in partnership with elders from Lenape and Lakota tribes.  Each buffalo measures about 7 feet tall and 9 feet long and requires three puppeteers to operate, according to organizers. Two work inside the structure, while a third operates it from outside. The puppets were designed by South Africa's Ukwanda Puppets and built in New York by Silovsky Studios and St. Ann's Warehouse. Their construction incorporates recycled and recyclable materials, including plywood, metal and burlap.  Tuesday's appearance was organized with the Times Square Alliance. Producers include St. Ann's Warehouse, The Walk Productions and KBH Arts. The team also brought Little Amal, a towering puppet representing a Syrian refugee girl, to New York in 2022.  The two buffalo will be part of a larger herd of 40 puppets scheduled to travel through Lower Manhattan on Friday (September 18) and Downtown Brooklyn on Saturday (September 19). Both events are free, with the public invited to walk alongside them.
