00:00The U.S. House of Representatives approved a major new sanctions package against Russia on Wednesday,
00:06clearing the way for President Trump to sign into law the most significant legislative action against Moscow since his return
00:13to the Oval Office.
00:15Lawmakers passed the measure, titled the Lindsay O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, 262 votes for to
00:24159 against.
00:25It comes after the U.S. Senate passed the measure with an overwhelming approval last month, with 86 votes in
00:32favor to 11 disagreements.
00:34The sanctions target Russia's energy and defense industries, President Vladimir Putin and senior officials around him,
00:41and the so-called shadow fleet of tankers Moscow uses to evade existing Western sanctions on its energy sales.
00:47The bill also grants Trump the power to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that continue buying
00:54large volumes of Russian oil and gas,
00:56a measure aimed squarely at China and India, two of Moscow's biggest remaining customers.
01:02Some Democrats, in favor of tougher sanctions on Russia, objected to the tariff provision,
01:07arguing it would give Trump broad authority over U.S. trade policy.
01:11Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the U.S. Congress unanimously approving the bill,
01:16which he said coincided with Russia launching even more attacks.
01:20The bill now returns to Trump's desk for a final signature, which he has indicated previously that he would do.
