00:14Both of those sentences are true about the same man. So how does an actor end up on the
00:20shortlist for an Oscar and the defendant's chair in a New Mexico courtroom in the same decade?
00:25That's the story we're digging into today. On October 21, 2021, Alec Baldwin was on the
00:31set of a Western movie called Rust, rehearsing a scene inside a small church on a ranch outside
00:37Santa Fe. He was practicing pulling a revolver from its holster, a crossdraw, pointing it toward
00:43the camera. The leading man was seated in a church pew, practicing a move in which he whips a pistol
00:48from its holster, when it suddenly went off. The gun wasn't supposed to have live ammunition in it.
00:53It did. The actor was practicing a crossdraw when the gun fired, striking Hutchins. The film's
01:00director, Joel Sousa, was also injured in the shooting. The cinematographer was Helena Hutchins,
01:06she died from her injuries. Baldwin was not just the actor holding the weapon, he was also a producer
01:11on the film. Within months, this stopped being just a tragedy on a film set, and became a legal fight
01:17that would drag Baldwin through courtrooms for close to three years. Prosecutors filed manslaughter
01:23charges against Baldwin and rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. The assistant director, David
01:29Halls, was hit with a separate charge for negligent use of a firearm, and took a plea deal fast,
01:34six months probation, a $500 fine. Baldwin didn't take a deal. Baldwin pleaded not guilty to the
01:41manslaughter charges. Then something strange happened. Prosecutors dropped the charges. New Mexico
01:47prosecutors said on Thursday, they will dismiss involuntary manslaughter charges against actor
01:53Alec Baldwin. Stemming from the fatal shooting of cinematographer Helena Hutchins on the set of the
01:58western movie Rust in 2021. But it wasn't over. The special prosecutors made clear this wasn't a clean
02:05exit for him. Still, prosecutors alluded to new revelations in the investigation, while cautioning
02:11that Baldwin has not been absolved. New facts were revealed that demand further investigation and
02:16forensic analysis. The prosecutors said Thursday in a news release, without elaborating on those
02:22facts. This decision does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability, and charges may be refiled.
02:29And they did refile. For the second time, actor Alec Baldwin is facing an involuntary manslaughter
02:35for the 2021 shooting death of cinematographer Helena Hutchins, which occurred on the New Mexico set of
02:42the western movie, Rust. Baldwin was indicted Friday by a grand jury. Meanwhile, the armor on set, Hannah
02:49Gutierrez-Reed, wasn't so lucky. Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, but acquitted
02:55on the tampering with evidence charge. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison. So heading into summer 2024,
03:02Baldwin was staring down the same fate his armorer had just received. The trial started, and then it
03:08collapsed fast. Baldwin's manslaughter trial began. Only three days after the trial began, a judge
03:14dismissed the charges against Alec Baldwin. The reason wasn't some legal technicality nobody could
03:20explain. It came down to a box of ammunition. During a defense cross-examination of crime scene
03:26technician, Marissa Poppel, it was revealed that a good Samaritan later submitted a box of ammunition
03:32to the sheriff's office. But it was intentionally filed under a different case number than the one
03:37used for the Rust case. The judge threw the whole case out, permanently. Alec Baldwin's manslaughter
03:42case dismissed in Rust shooting. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case with prejudice. Based on the
03:49misconduct of police and prosecutors. That's the headline moment everybody remembers, Baldwin walking out of a

04:01middle of a much longer story. Because Baldwin's reputation as one of the most talked about, most
04:07argued over actors in Hollywood, didn't start with a gun on a movie set. It started decades earlier,
04:13with a voicemail, a temper, and a string of run-ins. That turned him into tabloid catnip long before
04:18Rust ever went into production. To understand how he got to that courtroom, you have to go back to where

05:56time with this phone. The tape hit TMZ and spread everywhere within hours. The tape was aired by the
06:02celebrity website TMZcom on Thursday and quickly made headlines around the world. A judge stepped in
06:09almost immediately. A Lowe's Angels Superior Court Commissioner ordered Baldwin to stay away from
06:14his daughter, pending a May 4 hearing. Baldwin blamed the leak on his ex-wife, which she flatly
06:20denied through her publicist. Kim Basinger did not release the voicemail. Additionally, the voicemail
06:25was not sealed under a court order, said a statement released by the actress's publicist,
06:30Annette Wolfe, on Monday. Basinger's camp fired back, saying the real issue wasn't the leak at all.
06:36The issue is not about Kim or the alleged alienation that Alec constantly refers to.
06:41It is about his ongoing aggressive behavior, Basinger's statement said.
06:46Baldwin went on television to apologize. He sat down with Barbara Walters and Rosie O'Donnell
06:51on The View and told them straight out that what he'd done was wrong. The 30 Rock star apologized
06:57for his comments during an April 2007 appearance on The View in 2007. Telling then hosts Barbara Walters
07:05and Rosie O'Donnell. Obviously, calling your child a pig or anything else is improper and
07:10inappropriate, and I apologize to my daughter for that. But the fallout was already locked
07:15in, it cost him time with his daughter, and it became the single most quoted piece of tape
07:20connected to his name. One entertainment writer put it bluntly years later, after 30 Rock, after
07:26all his SNL appearances. That voicemail might still be what ends up on his tombstone.
07:31Here's the part that gets left out of a lot of the coverage, though. Ireland Baldwin herself
07:36has spent years pushing back on how big a deal it became. As a teenager, she told a magazine
07:41flatly that people blew it out of proportion. The only problem with that voicemail was that
07:46people made it out to be a way bigger deal than it was. He said stuff like that before
07:51just because he's frustrated. For me it was like, okay, whatever. I called him back, I was
07:56like, sorry dad, I didn't have my phone. By the time she was in her twenties, she was joking
08:02about it on stage at his celebrity roast. Telling the crowd she used to be known as that thoughtless
08:07little pig they'd all read about. And cracking that he'd never say that now because she's
08:12six foot two and could take him. But Baldwin himself has admitted the wound never fully closed
08:17for either of them. In an interview years later, he said it's become something people constantly
08:23use against him. There are people who admonish me or attack me and use that as a constant
08:28spearhead to do that. It's a scab that never heals cause it's being picked at all the time
08:33by other people. He's also acknowledged, without excuses, that it left a mark on his daughter
08:38that hasn't fully faded. The Saturday Night Live actor knows it hurt his daughter in a permanent
08:44way. That 2007 voicemail set the template for everything that came after. A public blowup,
08:50tabloid feeding frenzy, an apology, and a reputation that got a little more fragile every
08:55time. And Baldwin, unfortunately, kept giving the tabloids more material to work with.
09:00If the voicemail was Baldwin's first real scar, the decade that followed was when the hot-tempered

09:46photographer said Baldwin came at him. In June 2012, Baldwin had a similar battle with the press.
09:52In that incident, a New York Daily News photographer claimed Baldwin punched him outside a marriage
09:58license bureau. The Daily News reported that Marcus Santos was taking photos of the star and Thomas.
10:04On when the actor grabbed a second news photographer, then shoved Santos and hit him in the chin.
10:09He then walked away. Baldwin had his own version of events. Tweeting that the photographer had nearly hit
10:15him in the face with the camera. And in a comment that drew its own backlash, comparing the altercation
10:21to the Trayvon Martin shooting. Last June, Baldwin allegedly shoved a photographer from the New York
10:26Daily News. Claiming in a tweet that the shutterbug almost hit me in the face with his camera this
10:32morning. He didn't stop there. He compared his scuffle to the Trayvon Martin shooting. Then in 2013,
10:38came the moment that really blew things up and cost him a television deal. Outside his Manhattan
10:43apartment, with a British reporter named George Stark writing about his wife Hilaria's conduct
10:48at a funeral. Baldwin unloaded on Twitter with threats and a slur, calling him a toxic little
10:54queen. Weeks later, in a separate incident with a different photographer, he was caught
10:59on video yelling at paparazzi to stay away from his wife and child. And adding what witnesses said
11:05sounded like a homophobic slur at the end. The video posted by TMZ shows Baldwin, 55, yelling.

11:17After a female voice, presumably his wife Hilaria, calls him back, Baldwin stops his chase. But not

11:47but the actor claimed in a now-deleted tweet that he said fathead, according to TMZ, he still ended
11:53up apologizing to GLAAD. Once they told him the word he used, carried an anti-gay connotation,
11:59regardless of intent. Rich Ferraro from at GLAAD informs me that C-sucker is an anti-gay epithet.

12:31him was jailed. A media critic at the time wasn't gentle about it, writing that Baldwin's outbursts
12:37at paparazzi and his self-pitying complaints about fame had become predictable, and that this time it
12:43had crossed from garden-variety rage into something uglier. The actor and MSNBC talk show host Alec Baldwin's

13:15of hurling racial slurs and calling him a crackhead during another sidewalk confrontation. Following a
13:21February altercation with a newspaper photographer, Baldwin reportedly made racist remarks. Calling him

14:12he pleaded guilty to a harassment charge and agreed to attend an anger management program. By this point,
14:19Baldwin had built a well-documented history. Arrests, slurs, physical altercations, apologies,
14:25more apologies. He was one of the most decorated actors of his generation. And also one of the most
14:30litigated against, most photographed met outburst public figures in the country. That combination,
14:36critical acclaim on one side, a growing rap sheet of blow-ups on the other, is exactly what made the
14:42rust, tragedy detonate the way it did. When the news broke that Baldwin had fired the fatal shot
14:47on a movie set. The public didn't just see an accident, given everything that came before. A
14:53lot of people were primed to see it as the logical next chapter of a man who couldn't control himself.
14:58That's a separate question from what actually caused the shooting. But it shaped how the entire

20:08Baldwin even reached its final chapter, there was a separate track running the whole time.
20:13The civil case brought by Hutchins' husband, Matthew, and their young son. Hutchins' family
20:18filed the suit against Alec Baldwin, who stars in the film and serves as a producer. Along with the
20:24film's production companies, its producers and other key members of the crew. Alleging numerous
20:29industry standard violations, that suit didn't drag on the way the criminal case did.
20:34Less than a year after the shooting, both sides reached a settlement. Less than a year after the
20:39deadly shooting, Alec Baldwin and the family of Halina Hutchins have reached a settlement in a
20:44wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the incident on the set of Rust. The terms weren't just financial.
20:50As part of the deal, Matthew Hutchins would come on board as an executive producer on the finished film
20:56and take a cut of its profits. And production would resume with the same cast and crew.
21:01Matthew Hutchins, who was married to Halina Hutchins, will be an executive producer of the movie
21:06and receive a portion of the profits. The filming of Rust, which I will now executive produce,
21:12will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023. Hutchins was explicit that he
21:19wasn't interested in assigning blame through the civil process. I have no interest in engaging in
21:24recriminations or attribution of blame to the producers or Mr. Baldwin. All of us believe Halina's
21:31death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community
21:36have come together. To pay tribute to Halina's final work, a judge signed off on the settlement
21:41the following spring, sealing most of the details to protect Hutchins' young son. The details of the
21:47settlement, as well as documents and materials related to the settlement, have been sealed and are not
21:53available to the public. The judge cited privacy concerns for Hutchins' son when announcing the
21:58decision. Filming quietly finished a few months after that. The flick finally finished filming back
22:04in May. But the money side of that deal didn't run smoothly. More than a year after the settlement
22:09was finalized, court filings showed the production. Still owed the Hutchins' estate money, it was
22:15contractually supposed to have paid out already. The producers of the Alec Baldwin film, Rust, are nine
22:21months late in paying the widower. And son of cinematographer Halina Hutchins, who was killed in a
22:26gun accident on set in 2021. According to a recent court filing, Rust Movie Productions LLC was
22:33supposed to make the full guaranteed payments. By June 13, 2023, according to a Feb. 7 filing from
22:40the estate's attorneys. But that has not happened, according to the filing. Even the parts of this story
22:45meant to bring closure kept generating fresh headlines. Then there's the criminal case's own
22:51afterlife. Getting the manslaughter charge dismissed with prejudice. Didn't end Baldwin's legal fight,
22:56it just changed which side of the courtroom he was standing on. He turned around and sued,
23:01alleging malicious prosecution and civil rights violations. Tied to how the case against him had
23:07been handled. That suit didn't survive either, a judge dismissed it, though without prejudice.
23:12Over inactivity in the filing, leaving his legal team a window to try to revive it. A New Mexico
23:18judge has dismissed actor Alec Baldwin's lawsuit alleging malicious prosecution and civil rights

24:46those things cancel each other out. They ran side by side for almost 20 years, each new headline landing on
24:52top of the last one. Until controversial, wasn't really, a label people were debating about Alec Baldwin anymore.
24:59It was just the plain description of the career he'd built. One blow-up, one apology, one award, and one
