Eddie R. Aparicio’s exhibition Rubberneckers at Jeffrey Deitch, 18 Wooster Street, New York, presents work made after the January 2025 Eaton Fire destroyed his Los Angeles home. The fire was linked to decommissioned electrical transmission towers, a subject he had earlier addressed in Muñecas de transmisión, his 2024 Prospect.6 commission in New Orleans.The title refers to the Los Angeles habit of slowing to view accidents from a safe distance. Wall works use the diente de lobo stitch employed by Aparicio’s grandmother on dolls sewn from clothing of relatives who disappeared during El Salvador’s civil war; threads are left untrimmed.Ongoing Caucho rubber casts, begun in 2015, record the surfaces of ficus trees slated for removal in Mid-City and Pico-Union. New paintings fragment a utility-company logo associated with the fire. Amber sculptures encase objects collected from neighborhood residents. Column works convert uprooted street trees into upright, gridded forms.No human figures appear. The sculptures exceed human scale to register collective rather than individual marks. Aparicio (b. 1990, Los Angeles) lives and works in the city.
