00:00Good afternoon everyone, welcome to our press conference to preview our game against Ipswich.
00:06We'll start off with our one from Sky.
00:07Thanks Andy, afternoon David.
00:10One win, three draws in the Premier League, two rounds of the Carabao Cup negotiated.
00:15It's not been a bad start, has it? What's your assessment at this stage David?
00:19No, we've been pleased with the players, but obviously we'd like to turn a couple of those draws into wins
00:23if we can.
00:24But in some occasions we turned maybe losses into draws, so we have to accept that.
00:31I suppose these games where you're up against promoted sides, there's a little bit of an expectation maybe from fans
00:37that these are the ones you should be taking the points from at home?
00:40Well, I think everybody who now watches the Premier League would say there's no expectations anymore because of the level
00:46of the teams and whoever's playing.
00:48I think even more so this year. I think it looks as if it's quite up and down at the
00:52moment.
00:53We've seen Hull doing brilliantly well in the Premier League, but I don't think many people would have seen that.
00:57So I don't think you can take any team for granted and certainly if people are raising their expectations because
01:06of the opposition, they've certainly got it wrong.
01:08What is your assessment of Ipswich making a better fist of it than when they were in the Premier League
01:14last time?
01:16Does that stand in a good stead really?
01:17Well, they've only just started, so that'll be, we'll have to wait and see.
01:21But overall, I think they've started the season pretty well and they'll be pleased with where they are.
01:27Just back to Wednesday night, you played a strong side.
01:30You may say that you have to, given the squad depth, etc.
01:33But anybody out there who's made a real push and given you a selection headache maybe for tomorrow?
01:40I was really pleased with a lot of the performances which we had, you know.
01:45Tyler Dibbling, Jack Grealish to get the minutes he did and come through.
01:51They were the ones.
01:52Hayden does well every time he plays for us.
01:55So we're pleased with all those boys who come in.
01:57But that's part of it.
01:59You know, we need them all to be performing and we need a group of players who, when they're selected,
02:03then we can get them to play well.
02:06Any fitness issues from Wednesday night?
02:08Well, we're still waiting in Harrison a little bit to see how he is.
02:11We expect him to be OK Harrison.
02:15Merlin Roll's not available yet.
02:17Hopefully he'll be ready when he comes, you know, at the end of the window.
02:21At the end of the window, end of the international break, I should say.
02:25So hopefully we get them back then.
02:28Talking of internationals, Jared Bramthwaite has been selected in the England squad.
02:33You must be very pleased for him.
02:35Really pleased for anybody who gets selected for their countries.
02:39Jared, even more so because of the injuries he's had.
02:43But I was hearing that he's only been in, he's got one England cap and I think it was only
02:4625 or 27 minutes or something.
02:48So I hope he doesn't play four games.
02:51That's for sure where he is, but I'd be thrilled if Jared gets in.
02:55And I think that he's got potential to be a really good player and shown lots of that at the
03:00moment.
03:00I mean, most of the Everton fans really say they want to see Jared Bramthwaite fit for a whole season.
03:06It's not that simple, is it?
03:07But are you pleased with where he is at the moment in terms of those fitness levels?
03:10Yeah, I think some players can take a little bit of time.
03:14Jared's a big tall boy, long limbs, can take a little bit of time just to make sure that they
03:20grow into it a little bit.
03:22And over the last year or two, obviously we've been disappointed not to get more of them.
03:25But let's hope we can.
03:27We've sort of nutted them through pre-season.
03:30The staff here have done a really good job on him and the help he's had to sort of prepare
03:36himself for the season.
03:37So hopefully he'll be fine.
03:38Do you feel a little bit for Keenan Dewsbury Hall and James Garner?
03:41Do you think they have a chance?
03:43Yeah, Jimmy Garner coming back from injury for a hernia operation, which he rushed back to be back for the
03:50start of the season,
03:50was probably unexpected if it was going to happen.
03:54I think Keenan might just be a little bit unlucky to be outside of it at the moment.
03:58But if he keeps scoring, keeps playing the way he has been, then he'll be in with an outside chance.
04:04This is the final game before an extended international break.
04:08So obviously two breaks before the end of the year instead of the three.
04:11What are your thoughts around that?
04:14Does it benefit?
04:15Well, I don't think MD can really have any big thoughts on it because it's never happened before,
04:18I don't think, on what it looks like.
04:23I would be surprised if it's a benefit from where we are.
04:25I think we'd rather the league continue, but we do have international breaks.
04:30But this is the longest one I can remember.
04:32Certainly, I think it's the first time we've ever gone for three weeks, certainly during the season.
04:36So, yeah, I think we'll all have to get on with it.
04:39We've got no choice.
04:40Well, it will be that going forward, I believe, as well.
04:43So what do you do with those players who haven't been called up for international duty?
04:47Are there fitness issues for them?
04:49Do you arrange games, friendlies?
04:51Well, we quite moan quite a lot around about Christmas time because we play too much football.
04:56So now we've got an opportunity to maybe give players a little bit more rest time.
05:00Certainly not international players.
05:01If you're an international player, then you've got to deal with it all.
05:04But the other players who are not in that situation might have a bigger opportunity to get a little bit
05:09more downtime
05:09and train differently at different times.
05:12And I'm guessing most clubs will probably be preparing their own in-house games.
05:17But then don't managers moan about match sharpness and players lacking it?
05:23Well, we moan about everything, don't we?
05:25Well, you know, we'll moan if some of them know that the fixture congestion and what they're doing with the
05:31fixtures is really, really poor.
05:32But obviously that's also part of probably the international schedule, et cetera.
05:38But I think we just, everybody will just get on with it and do what we can and see how
05:43it goes.

05:51On Jared, how much work has he put in over the years?
05:55Because you mentioned he's had quite a number of injuries.
05:56How much determination does he have to show to get to this stage where he's now England's selectable?
06:04Well, look, Jared, Jared, you know, has come up, started at Carlyle,
06:08and I think the club here done a great job on recruiting him in the first place.
06:11It was a brilliant bit of recruitment from Everton.
06:15I also put him out on loan at right moments on his young, up-and-coming career.
06:22Unfortunately, as we said earlier, he missed a couple of bits of seasons with injury.
06:28So if he can get himself back, then I've got no doubt he'll be in contention.
06:31He's a really good footballer and he's a good centre-half.
06:36So he's got a lot of people I'm sure he'd sort of thank for it.
06:40Lots of people long before I've stepped in who've helped him already become an England international
06:45and obviously helped him get a move from Carlyle to Everton.
06:50And he's developed greatly in the recent seasons.
06:53And certainly what I've seen of him, he was somebody when I came in who I was determined that the
06:59club should make sure we keep hold of.
07:01And you mentioned Tyler's performance on Wednesday.
07:04Obviously different players take longer to settle into a new club, a new city, a new team than others.
07:11Do you feel that he's now ready to really show everyone what he's made?
07:15I think he's much more ready now than he was.
07:18I think he's got a bigger fight in his belly.
07:21I think he's acting in a way where he's wanting to show it.
07:25He did certainly in the game in midweek, he showed it.
07:28So it can take time.
07:29And look, the history I've had at the club here over longer periods,
07:33we used to bring in boys and it took them a long time, six months a year maybe,
07:36to become first-team regulars.
07:38And Tyler's probably found it quite tough, but he's now beginning to show his teeth a little bit
07:45and show us exactly what he can do.
07:48And you've got the momentum of having this unbeaten start.
07:51So in a way, do you not welcome the break?
07:55Because you've got the momentum.
07:57Well, you could look at it a different way.
07:58I think just because you could look at it in a way where I would say that, you know,
08:02we'd like to keep it going now.
08:03Why do we want to stop?
08:05But on the other hand, you know, it also gives us a chance with a smaller squad
08:09just to try and make sure that we can sort of get the players correct.
08:14And, you know, as we said, we're with Harrison and Merlin out for a couple of games there.
08:18So, you know, it doesn't take much for you to go the other way for you.
08:22So hopefully we can get both of them back fit and ready
08:25and in a good place for obviously when we come back.

08:35Just on Tyler Dibbling there, you know, you're saying you've seen the fight.
08:38I spoke to your assistant, Alan Irvine, after the game.
08:41He said he came back different after this summer.
08:45Yeah.
08:45I just wondered, did you see that?
08:46And when you are dealing with settling him in, how have you dealt with that?
08:51Is it sort of a tough love?
08:52Is it a, do you have to take him to one side?
08:55Well, a bit of them all, really, Julia,
08:57because I think you try to put over what we do at Everton, what we expect from them.
09:03You know, he's coming in from a different environment, a different culture of where he's been.
09:09And I think there's a lot of Everton's culture of what we need that he still has to find and
09:16show for us.
09:17I think he's beginning to show that.
09:18I think he showed it on a brilliant recovery tackle in the game the other night, you know.
09:24What do we really want from him now is we want him to take people on, we want him to
09:27score, we want him to assist.
09:29And he's just beginning to show that a bit more now than what he's done previously.
09:34I don't know how long it can always take people to settle in.
09:36I've always thought that the players who come from overseas can take longer.
09:42But the proof is that, you know, they could be, they could come in and settle right away.
09:46But I'm just going back to the history of bringing boys from the lower leagues.
09:49And I don't mean that Southampton at the time weren't necessarily the lower leagues.
09:53But boys who are coming up, and I've mentioned them time and time again,
09:57sometimes it can take a bit of time for them to sort of establish themselves getting the team.
10:01But sometimes sitting on the bench then watching it makes them ready and more hungry when they do get the
10:06opportunity.
10:07When you say the culture of Everton, do you have to be a type of person or a type of
10:12player to succeed at this club?
10:14I believe so.
10:16I believe that there is, which has been handed down from Howard Kendall, Peter Reid, you know, you can name
10:24them all.
10:25All the people over the years who have been at the club, people through it, I think there's something in
10:29it.
10:30And I think that culture is still here and I hope it remains here.
10:36Charlie Alcaraz midweek, I think he'd been on three minutes when he scored.
10:40I know he's waited for his moments and to talk about taking those moments when you're giving them.
10:45Has he given you another option?
10:48We've all sat here and asked you about the striker situation, you've only got one.
10:51Has he given you that option now?
10:52Yeah, we thought about it.
10:54You know, we played Brennan centre-forward really the other night.
10:56And that was another alternative to it when we took Tierney off.
11:01But the biggest thing about Charlie is he keeps working hard, keeps pushing, trains really well, trying to be the
11:08best he can.
11:09And that gives him every chance of us using him at different moments in the games.
11:14And we did the other night and he came up with a really good goal.
11:16I think it's something we've always thought that he has got, Charlie, as he's got a goal in him.
11:22So we need goals and we need people who can score.
11:24And on the night, we needed Charlie.
11:26There's been so many headlines in recent weeks.
11:29We barely touched on Jack Grealish when he returned.
11:32So, yeah, he started midweek.
11:34It feels like he's settled quickly because it's almost as though he never really left.
11:38He was here for the full season pretty much last season, even though he was injured for half of it.
11:42What do you see Jack Grealish's role being for Everton this season?
11:46What do you want from him?
11:48Yeah, I'd very much like it to be of the levels he was at the start of last season.
11:52That's what I want.
11:54And I think he can give us the ability to retain possession, keep the ball longer.
12:00He gets us up the pitch.
12:02So he gives us lots of things.
12:04But the bits I want from him is what I say from all the former players.
12:07I'm looking for assists.
12:08I'm looking for goals.
12:11I want him to score.
12:12I need him to score.
12:14Tyreek scored a great goal last week for us, just over a week ago, yeah.
12:19So I need them to help us with assists and also, and to be fair, you know, I think Jack
12:25was a bit unlucky.
12:26I think he made a couple of chances the other night and we didn't take them.
12:29So I hope that he can do that for us.
12:32Finally for me, you've got your Everton in the community badge on today.
12:36And I know the charity's taking over the stadium for the game, doing lots of activations.
12:40And you've been here twice now and pretty much when Everton in the community was sort of in its infancy.
12:47What does it mean to everybody here inside Finch Farm and across the club?
12:51I think we're actually really proud of Everton in the community because of what it does.
12:57I'm from a city from Glasgow where there's a lot of difficult situations in the city, not unlike Liverpool in
13:04itself.
13:05And I think Everton do their utmost to try and make sure that they do what they can.
13:11There's a lot of people who work for nothing, do the work, go out and help to bring that in.
13:17So I think that Everton in the community have done a brilliant job.
13:20And I think it's got bigger because of the strength of it over the years.
13:24And I hope the people who come to the game can throw a few bob into the bucket if that's
13:30what it is.
13:31Because there's no doubt it'll go in the right direction and help people, whether it be disadvantaged people or disabled
13:38people, etc.
13:39They'll be trying to do something for the people who need it.

13:53After the victory against Wolves on Wednesday night, it's now the club's longest unbeaten start to a season since Ancelotti's
14:01side,
14:01where they went eight games unbeaten at the start of the season.
14:04Just how, what's the feel of the squad?
14:06You know, Vitaly Mikhelenko, he spoke on after the Spurs game about the squad feel,
14:11about how he thinks it's the best squad since he came to the club in 2022.
14:14Just what's the morale and the feeling around the squad at the moment?
14:18Well, within the group, we're keeping it really tight, really compact, and there's a really good feel between us.
14:25But we're also aware that, you know, we've got a lot to do.
14:28We're going to have to keep scoring goals and making goals.
14:32We've certainly improved on all those aspects, you know, numbers-wise, more opportunities, more chances.
14:37So, we're getting closer to that.
14:42And coupled with, you know, us keeping clean sheets as well has been really, really important for us.
14:46But, yeah, there's a good spirit amongst the players.
14:49They're in good fetal.
14:50You know, they're, I think, getting a bit of momentum.
14:54Coming back from games where you're losing is a good sign as well that they're showing that.
14:59And, you know, we've won a couple of cup games.
15:02Even the other night, the cup game we won, you know, we played well, but we had to keep going.
15:06We couldn't find a way in, and eventually we got there later in the game.
15:09So, there's lots of things that are beginning to do a lot better.
15:13So, yeah, I agree with Mikko.
15:16We've got a good squad, and we want to try and keep it going.
