Marvel’s Wolverine AI Controversy Explained: Insomniac Says It’s Just a Bug

Video Description

Insomniac Games has responded to the strange-looking bathroom sign in Marvel’s Wolverine that went viral after some fans questioned whether it was an AI-generated asset.

The sign certainly looks bizarre, but Insomniac says there’s no AI-generated asset involved — it’s simply a visual bug that the developer plans to fix. In this video, I take a look at what happened, why the sign sparked AI accusations, and why it’s important to have actual evidence before labeling something as AI-generated.

With Marvel’s Wolverine already being heavily scrutinized since launch, this bizarre bathroom sign became yet another example of how quickly a small game issue can turn into a major online discussion.

What do you think? Did the sign look AI-generated to you, or did you immediately think it was a glitch? Let me know in the comments!

00:00If you've been following Marvel's Wolverine since its release, you've probably seen a very strange-looking bathroom sign making the
00:06rounds online.
00:07The sign looks, well, pretty bizarre. So bizarre, in fact, that some people online started wondering whether Insomniac had used
00:15artificial intelligence to generate the asset.
00:18Well, Insomniac has now addressed those accusations, and according to the developer, there's no AI-generated asset hiding behind this
00:26strange bathroom sign.
00:27Instead, what we're apparently looking at is a visual bug that the studio plans to fix.
00:32And honestly, this whole situation raises a much bigger question about the way we look at video games in 2026,
00:39especially when a game as high-profile as Marvel's Wolverine is already being examined under a microscope.
00:45So today, let's take a look at what happened, why people thought the sign was AI-generated, when Insomniac actually
00:52said,
00:52and why I think this is an interesting example of how difficult it can be to distinguish an actual AI
00:57-generated asset from a good old-fashioned video game glitch.
01:02Marvel's Wolverine is the latest major PlayStation 5 release from Insomniac Games, the studio behind the modern Marvel's Spider-Man
01:09games.
01:10And ever since the game launched, practically every aspect of it has been scrutinized online.
01:15The game's story has been discussed, its cutscenes have been analyzed, its combat has been dissected, even its quick-time
01:22events have become the subject of criticism and discussion.
01:25And regardless of what you think about those criticisms, the sheer amount of attention being directed at Wolverine means that
01:32even relatively minor details can suddenly become major online talking points.
01:36That's exactly what happened with this bathroom sign.
01:40At first glance, the sign looks completely messed up.
01:43The imagery is difficult to make out, the shapes look distorted, and depending on the screenshot or angle you're looking
01:49at, it can almost appear as though the artwork is melting into itself.
01:53And if you spent any time looking at AI-generated images, you could probably understand why some people immediately jump
01:59to that conclusion.
02:00One of the biggest giveaways people associate with generative AI is bizarre-looking text, strange anatomy, distorted objects, and visual
02:08elements that don't quite make sense.
02:10So when people saw a sign inside Marvel's Wolverine that appeared to have gobbled imagery and questionable details, the obvious
02:17question for some became, did Insomniac use AI to make this?
02:25Insomniac's explanation is that the sign isn't an AI-generated asset at all. It's a bug.
02:31The developer explained that the first strange appearance is the result of a visual issue and that the studio intends
02:36to fix it.
02:37And when you look at the sign from different angles and in different screenshots, that explanation actually starts to make
02:43quite a bit of sense.
02:44The appearance of the sign changes depending on the perspective, which makes it look less like someone deliberately created an
02:50AI-generated image, and more like there's some kind of texture or a rendering problem occurring.
02:56That's an important distinction because an AI-generated asset and a broken texture can produce completely different problems, even if
03:03the end result can look similarly strange.
03:06Video games are incredibly complicated pieces of software.
03:09A developer can spend years creating characters, environments, animations, textures, lighting systems, and thousands upon thousands of individual objects.
03:19And sometimes something simply breaks.
03:22A texture can fail to load correctly.
03:24Two visual elements can overlap.
03:26A model can clip through another model.
03:28An animation can behave strangely.
03:31A lighting effect can produce an unintended result.
03:34We've been seeing bizarre video game glitches for decades.
03:37The funny thing is that one of the comments on the article actually points towards another side of the discussion.
03:43One commenter, Jarek, argued that the fact that the object is just a generic sign doesn't necessarily mean AI wouldn't
03:50be used to create it.
03:51And that's worth discussing.
03:52The commenter pointed out that modern games contain enormous numbers of generic assets, signs, lamps, benches, chairs, tables, doors, cabinets,
04:04trash cans, bushes, rocks, streets, sidewalks, mailboxes, traffic lights, cups, bottles, boxes, and countless other environmental objects.
04:17Historically, developers have often outsourced or otherwise streamlined the production of these kinds of assets because they're necessary for creating
04:24a believable world.
04:26But they aren't necessarily the things that receive the most attention from players.
04:30When you're making a superhero game, you probably want your artists spending their time on Wolverine himself, his claws, his
04:37costumes, his enemies, major environments, story characters, and other high-profile elements.
04:43A random bathroom sign isn't exactly going to be featured on the game's box art.
04:47And that's one of the arguments surrounding generative AI in game development, that it could potentially be used to create
04:54some of these lower-priority assets more quickly and cheaply.
04:58But there's an important if there.
05:01That argument explains why someone could use AI for something like a sign.
05:05It doesn't prove that Insomniac actually did.
05:08And in this particular case, Insomniac has said that the strange-looking sign is the result of a bug.
05:13That's why I think it's important not to jump from this looks weird to this must have been generated by
05:18AI.
05:19And that's especially important because now we're living in a time when AI-generated art and text are everywhere.
05:25People have become much more aware of the visual and textual problems associated with generative AI.
05:32Weird hands, strange lettering, distorted faces, nonsensical objects, and other visual mistakes can immediately make people suspicious.
05:41But the problem is that video games can produce those same kinds of bizarre results without AI being involved at
05:47all.
05:47A broken texture isn't evidence of AI.
05:50A character model clipping through a wall isn't evidence of AI.
05:54Neither is a typo or a strange-looking sign.
05:58You need actual evidence that AI was used.
06:01And that's something I think is especially important because false accusations can have consequences for the people who actually created
06:08the work.
06:09I've talked about AI-generated content before, and I absolutely understand why people are concerned about it.
06:15But if we're going to criticize the use of AI in games, movies, artwork, or anything else, I think we
06:21should make sure we're criticizing actual examples rather than things that merely look suspicious.
06:27Otherwise, we risk creating a situation where every visual mistake becomes an AI accusation.
06:33And ironically, that could make it harder to identify legitimate cases of AI usage.
06:38If everything gets labeled AI whenever something looks weird, eventually the accusation loses its meaning.
06:44It's kind of like the boy-who-cried-wolf problem.
06:46If people constantly accuse developers of using AI without evidence, audiences may become less willing to take legitimate allegations seriously
06:55when there actually is documentation showing that generative AI was used.
07:00There's also a funny side to all of this because some of the comments underneath the article weren't exactly taking
07:05the controversy seriously.
07:06One commenter, named Good News Everyone, joked that the sign looked like a really well-endowed two-headed pirate who
07:13had forgotten his peg leg.
07:15Another commenter, Diego, had a similarly bizarre interpretation saying they thought it depicted a three-legged or tailed two-headed
07:22mutant next to a human bathroom.
07:24And honestly, these comments demonstrate just how strange the image actually looks.
07:29People aren't even necessarily seeing the same thing.
07:32One person sees a pirate, another sees a mutant, someone else sees AI-generated artwork, and Insomniac is saying the
07:39reality is much less dramatic.
07:41It's simply a visual bug.
07:43What's particularly interesting to me is that this controversy probably wouldn't have gotten nearly as much attention if Marvel's Wolverine
07:50wasn't already receiving so much scrutiny.
07:53When a major game is under the microscope, every little mistake can become content.
07:57A strange animation becomes a viral clip.
08:00A questionable line of dialogue becomes a meme.
08:03A visual glitch becomes an argument about the development process.
08:07And now, a bathroom sign has become part of a much larger conversation about artificial intelligence in video games.
08:14That's the nature of gaming discourse in 2026.
08:17Games are no longer just being played.
08:20They're being analyzed frame by frame, clipped, reposted, debated, and dissected almost immediately after release.
08:27And that could be a good thing where it brings legitimate problems to light.
08:31But it could also mean that mistakes that would have been forgotten years ago can now reach millions of people
08:35within hours.
08:36In this case, though, it appears that AI simply isn't the story.
08:41At least according to Insomniac, the strange bathroom sign is a bug and the developer plans to fix it.
08:47And once that patch arrives, this entire controversy will probably become one of those weird little footnotes in Marvel's Wolverine
08:54history.
08:54But I think there's still something worth taking away from it.
08:57We absolutely should continue questioning how generative AI is being used in the entertainment industry.
09:03We should ask developers about it.
09:05We should pay attention to disclosures.
09:07We should support artists and developers whose work we value.
09:10But we should also make sure that our accusations are based on evidence.
09:14Because sometimes the explanation for something looking completely ridiculous isn't artificial intelligence.
09:20Sometimes it's just a bug.
09:22So what do you think about this whole situation?
09:25Did the bathroom sign look suspicious enough that you initially thought it could have been AI generated?
09:30Or did you immediately assume it was some kind of texture or rendering glitch?
09:34And more broadly, do you think the gaming community needs to be more careful about distinguishing genuine AI generated assets
09:41from ordinary video game bugs?
