00:00Tehran recently presented two contrasting images of Iranian society.
00:05On the same day, first, thousands of women took part in a 10-kilometer race, with many
00:10runners amongst them without headscarves, openly defying Iran's mandatory hijab rules.
00:15The strict enforcement of these rules recently led to the death in police custody of 22-year-old
00:20Mahsa Amini, which sparked nationwide protests, while countless others faced heavy fines and
00:25imprisonment.
00:27However, around the same time on Friday, state media broadcast a military parade featuring
00:32more than 300,000 women and male supporters of the Islamic Republic marching through central
00:38Tehran as part of a state rally.
00:41During the march, women in full hijab displayed their loyalty to the regime by carrying machine
00:45guns.
00:48Four years after the Women Life Freedom Movement, more Iranian women are appearing in public without
00:53mandatory hijab, even as authorities continue to implement the law.
