In Milan’s Isola district, interior photographers and content creators Danilo Floreani and Paolo Amerio of Home in Heidelberg transformed a former orthopedic shoe workshop into a warm, character-filled 45sqm/484sqft home. Starting with an almost completely empty shell, they opened up the space, uncovered the original timber beams and retained the existing arch, using the apartment’s height to create a mezzanine bedroom above the bathroom. Custom storage by Tylko makes use of otherwise overlooked areas, from a shallow hallway wardrobe to low chest of drawers fitted between the mezzanine beams, whilst a modular sofa keeps the home flexible for everyday life, working and entertaining. Glass blocks bring natural light into the bathroom, bold accents like the orange staircase and baby-blue finishes add personality, and the elevated bedroom creates a completely different perspective through the apartment.

Sized in precise 10 cm increments, it fits the space just right. Made from modules, it can be moved, separated and rearranged as life changes. Two bouclé fabrics, 15 colours and changeable covers option add flexibility, so Uff can keep adapting over time.

00:03We were lucky because we were looking for a place where we could really start
00:08from zero, where other people were looking for a place that was already
00:13renovated. Our home was actually orthopedic shoes workshop. We didn't have
00:21any kitchen and any living room so we have to start everything from the
00:25beginning. The space was completely different in the sense the only room you
00:31could recognize right now is the bathroom. An empty playground. The beauty of this
00:38building it has a courtyard and we put a bench there where we usually drink our
00:43espresso. It is like stepping into the bubble and I think this really attracted
00:48us when looking the first time at the apartment to really find our peaceful
00:52oasis inside the city like Milano which is a big metropolitan city.
00:58It's a mix between the new neighbor and the old Milano and we like this mix.
01:04I'm Danilo. I'm Paolo. And we are photographers and content creators of the
01:09Instagram page Home in Idleberg. And this is our Frenchie Tina.
01:15We like to live smaller because we realize that we don't need so many things.
01:21Living in small and compact spaces makes your creativity go like crazy. You know you
01:27need really to use every centimeter of your place, every corner, make it practical
01:31but also aesthetically appealing. And I think this challenge is really it's so
01:37beautiful, it's so enriching for us. We actually moved in a month ago so we're
01:43still settling in.
01:46The name of this project is Piccola Isola. Piccola means small and Isola is the name of the
01:52district we are in which also means island. So it's our little island.
01:59Isola district is located in the north part of Milano just behind Centrale station. It's
02:07up and coming neighborhood. It's full of bars, cafes, boutiques. What we really like about
02:14this neighborhood is the local community and the local vibes that it has which is very
02:20much far away I would say from the touristic Milano that the people knows but it's much
02:26more authentic.
02:29So this is our street. What we love about our building is this yellow old-style Milanese facade.
02:37We've got this cute little door. Shall we go in?
02:41Si, andiamo.
02:46This used to be a convent and right there where you see that door it's our flat.
02:53The place was abandoned since covid so for five years was vacant meaning we found it in
03:00a terrible state.
03:02We normally fall in love with places which are not let's say stereotypical apartments.
03:10So I think that's why the old building being a convent and then being transformed into apartments
03:17apartments made a huge impact for us.
03:20And another great thing for me that I love flowers is that we have a florist in the yard.

04:36This is our entrance area.
04:39At first, this was covered with a mezzanine.
04:43It felt really oppressive, so that's why we decided to just break it.
04:49Yes.
04:49We decided to ask our carpenter to build this wardrobe here.
04:56Wow.
04:58We didn't want to show the boiler anywhere in the kitchen and in the bathroom, there is no space.
05:04So at the end, we decided to put it up there and to hide it.
05:07And we keep a ladder here to get the vacuum cleaner.
05:15For this area, and actually also for the living room, we're going to go to that later, we have chosen
05:21floss, in this case dual light.
05:24First of all, because they are adjustable, so you can really adjust them as much as you want.
05:29For high spaces, they really solve lighting problems.
05:35In the sense, having the mezzanine, this one is going towards the mezzanine, this one goes more towards entrance and
05:41kitchen.
05:44To enhance the height of the ceilings, we decided to hang this work of art from a Dutch artist.
05:51Another thing for us was where to put our jackets and shoes, so we decided to hang these MUTO dots.
05:58And this Montana furniture is where you can leave your shoes when you get in.
06:03Rule number one is no shoes in the flat.
06:06So when we have friends over, everybody with their feet.
06:22This is our dining area.
06:25We have chosen a round table to break it any bit all the lines of the apartment.
06:30I think this was extremely important for us.
06:33Also because the kitchen is small, so a square or rectangular table wouldn't take too much space.
06:39Round saves space.
06:42We play with wood and metal.
06:48As an extension of the table, we have this ledge.
06:52We put many things.
06:53I mean, we have our Macbook, our agenda.
06:56Actually, sometimes we bring cushions here to sit also.
07:00We use a lot of the kitchen as a working space.
07:03We thought a lot where if we could place a desk somewhere, but at the end we find ourselves always
07:11using this table.
07:12We like the light a lot.
07:14The space we are in is the kitchen.
07:17This is surely the space we live the most during the day, as good Italians.
07:23This was the main room of the orthopedic shoe workshop that was standing here before.
07:32We really wanted to keep the arch because for us it was extremely important and beautiful, of course.
07:42It was a place from the architecture point of view, I think it's the main point of the kitchen.
07:47Yes.
07:48Talking about the materials, it's a costume made kitchen from a Milanese brand.
07:55Yes.
07:56We had to have it costume made because of the old buildings, the walls are not straight.
08:02And we have chosen laminated wood as countertop.
08:06First of all because it's very resistant and second of all because it's super easy to clean.
08:11And I'm a clean freak, I must admit.
08:21We are so much in love with the design of this pendant light that we didn't want anything to be
08:28on this wall.
08:29We decided to have this Helica stove because it was one of the few available with the fan integrated.
08:41This is a shelf from Metal Buddha, a company that we collaborate a lot with.
08:45And I'd be very proud because I found the courage to drill the wall and hang the shelf.
08:53We are not very handy men.
08:55No, not at all.
08:56But we said we cannot call someone to just put up a shelf.
09:04On this side of the kitchen, we have a few cabinets over here.
09:09The first one has all necessary products to clean.
09:14We've got an extra cabinet here.
09:17Then we have the oven, the washing machine and dryer.
09:21Then we have our fridge.
09:24I think it's nice to have a bit of this partition because it gives the feeling that the smell will
09:30not go into the fridge.
09:31The bedroom, which is really good in an open plan apartment.
09:44This is the hallway, which is the space that separates the kitchen, the bathroom and the living room.
09:50We've realized, obviously living in a small space, that we needed some storage room.
09:56And the hallway seemed the perfect place to store it.
09:59We have bought this nice Tilko wardrobe.
10:06The nice thing is that it's shallow, so it doesn't take too much space.
10:10Also, it doesn't interfere with our wish to have more light passing through the space.
10:15On top, we have the Zangra lights.
10:19And the nice thing of the cupboard is that we could customize the height.
10:23So for us, it was super important to keep the lights visible.
10:28We wanted to take over these lines here and the lines going through with the mezzanine.
10:34So to have sort of like a match.
10:36I would say we can move to the bathroom.
10:41So here we are in the bathroom, which stands in the middle of the flat under the mezzanine.
10:50Following the Italian regulation, between any room and the toilet, you need to have an extra room.
10:56So we have built the Hunter room exactly for this purpose.
11:01And at the same time, we played with the glass blocks.
11:04We brought in a vanity sink from Nick.
11:10We've got a costume made metal shelf, which is also very nice, following the round shape given by the glass
11:20blocks.
11:20And then a nice vanity mirror that can be also lit with a click.
11:30From the Hunter room, we step into the toilet.
11:33We do have a sliding door, as you can see.
11:37For the toilet, we have chosen a baby blue color.
11:41We thought from the beginning there was a nice contrast.
11:46We kept going with the Nick brand for toilet and bidet.
11:52Yes, we've got a bidet because we're Italian.
11:55I know, it's very important for us.
11:57Our carpenter did this niche here with two wooden shelves, also painted in baby blue.
12:06One more thing very interesting about the shower is that in order to get a tiny bit more light entering
12:11the toilet,
12:13we have placed glass blocks that are taking the light from the living room,
12:19so we have a tiny bit more extra natural light in the toilet.
12:32This is our living room.
12:34What we love about the living room is, first of all, the natural light hitting the couch.
12:41This is the place where we relax.
12:44These high ceilings, these wooden beams that we uncovered during the renovation.
12:51This is top.
12:53As for the old apartment, we have chosen this kind of cream beige tone for the walls.
13:01Also sustained strong colors, bold colors.
13:04Of course we have decided to put like the orange staircase.
13:09Which is, of course, the centerpiece of the living room.
13:13It's something that you see from the entrance.
13:15It's costume made from a company here in Milano.
13:20And then we've got a very practical mini drawer piece from Tilco.
13:29Here we store a bit of everything, also things that you don't like to see.
13:33For example, this is my work backpack, which I don't like to see personally.
13:40In the living room we have a couch from Tilco.
13:42First of all, it's super comfy.
13:44It's a model couch, so you actually can separate it.
13:49Usually we have the two pieces separated.
13:51One is there, so we can watch the movies on this wall.
13:54And one is a bit more close to the bathroom wall.
13:59We are big movie fans, so essential for us was to have a beamer.
14:06We normally, with the projector, we project on top of that wall.
14:11Making ourselves cozy movie nights.
14:15The coffee table is made of glass fumée.
14:21The color is great.
14:22It has a vintage look, which we really like.
14:26It's rather light, so we can move it around as much as we want.
14:29While this cartel side table stool comes from a great vintage place here in Milano.
14:38A shop where you get lost.
14:40And we love it.
14:42We decided to put this metal piece,
14:45because we wanted to hide some water stains coming from the neighbors.
14:49They are fixing the problems.
14:51They had some problems with water pipes and humidity.
14:53But it will take one year to dry.
14:56Around problems, you can always find a solution which is not just practical,
15:01but also like aesthetically appealing.
15:04And in this case, we are very satisfied.
15:06Even when the stains are going to be off, I would love to keep it.
15:11I really like it.
15:14So these lights, again, we have played with different heights.
15:20Because one light is directed to the staircase, one light is directed up for the mezzanine,
15:26and one is directed down when we are chilling on the sofa.
15:34There is one more light, which I would like to show you, which is from Hai, which is this one.
15:41This one is on most during nights, and it gives such a warm, cozy feeling to the entire room.
15:56This is our bedroom, and well, of course, the bedroom is standing on the mezzanine.
16:02We would have never, ever imagined how beautiful it is to sleep elevated.
16:09The bed comes from a company called Karub Design.
16:14It has futon on top, which makes it very comfy.
16:19And it has one feature that I would like to show you.
16:22You can simply remove all these accessories, bringing it back.
16:28You can slide it all over.
16:35The bed is standing exactly on top of the shower and toilet, meaning it's even a bit more elevated,
16:44and it's curved exactly as the glass brick walls that we have under.
16:52We have chosen a linoleum plastic flooring.
16:56It's a bit more elastic as a material, so they told us that as a mezzanine, iron mezzanine,
17:01sometimes if you put like wood or tiles, they can crack.
17:04So we decided to go for a linoleum.
17:07We've got this glass partition between the mezzanine and the kitchen,
17:13which plays an important part also regarding privacy.
17:18This piece in Italian we call Maggiordomo, that in English means butler.
17:23Yeah, you have to imagine, we enter home, we come up here and Danilo's just like undressing this way.
17:30And I'm like Danilo, no, we need to have something dedicated where you can put your things on
17:35without leaving them on the floor.
17:40The mezzanine and the sleeping room are not only the bedroom,
17:44but also our rack for clothes, which is again costume made.
17:51We have used the in-between wooden beams as possibility to bring in some metals bars,
17:59where we hang our clothes.
18:02And then we've got this Tilco drawer, where we have of course like our clothes and like underwears and everything
18:11we need.
18:12The super nice thing of an elevated bedroom on the mezzanine is that you can overlook through the kitchen,
18:20but also through the living room.
18:22You get a completely different perspective from up.
18:27Again, we kept it very simple, very minimalistic, but just because being so small,
18:34we wanted still to have the feeling of space and air.
18:40A home is not about how big the place is, but how you feel inside it.
18:47It feels that we are living in a bigger place than 45 square metres,
18:51because we feel connected with the district, with the neighbour.
18:56Neighbours is also our home somehow.
18:59It's an extension of our home.
19:02So it's really nice to live in a small place with very good design.
