00:05The 12 hours of Sebring culminate a week of inspection, practice, adjustments.
00:09The same concentration and expertise are evident in the drivers of the smaller, lighter cars
00:14as in the 180 mile an hour speedsters, and they're just as determined to win.
00:19Sebring gives them that chance.
00:21National Speed Sports News Editor Chris Econimacki has the details.
00:25There are three types of cars in the Sebring race.
00:28Grand Touring cars are GT, GT Prototype, and Sports Racing.
00:34Sebring is primarily for GT cars.
00:37For 44 of the 70 entrants are in this category, divided into three international divisions
00:43according to engine size.
00:45The divisions are further subdivided into international classes, each with its own trophy and cash purse.
00:51Here are the cars.
00:53Grand Touring Division I, the 100 horsepower.
00:57Speed's up to 125 miles an hour.
01:00Cars such as the Triumph Spitfire, the redoubtable MG Midget.
01:06Grand Touring Division II, up to 200 horsepower.
01:10Speed's of 145 miles an hour.
01:14The dependable Porsche 904.
01:17The spirited Alfa Romeo GTZ.
01:21And the stoic Volvo P1800.
01:24Grand Touring Division III, the big iron.
01:28Cars of unlimited horsepower.
01:29On the backstretch, 180 miles an hour.
01:34Aerodynamic Ford Cobras.
01:36Husky Corvette Stingrays.
01:39And elegant Ferrari GTOs.
01:41These then are the machines of Sebring.
01:43Cars with a top speed of 100 to 180 miles an hour.
01:47Costing as little as a $2,000 British import to the over $100,000 experimental factory prototypes.
01:53All here, for one purpose.
01:56To win.
01:57To win means to drive farther in 12 hours than anyone else.
02:01The lightweight, high-powered sports racers and prototype speedsters are given the best chance for overall.
02:07And this year, American cars are prepared to challenge Ferrari's traditional dominance
02:12with the most formidable array of power and speed ever assembled.
02:16Ferrari's chief antagonist, Carroll Shelby, has a brace of the beautiful Ford GTs
02:21and a stable of his newly styled Ford Cobras.
02:25And international star, Dan Gurney, will be running under the Shelby banner in the sports racing category
02:30with his own design, Lotus 19.
02:33We're going to be pushing it pretty hard, I think.
02:36In other words, we're not sure just how fast it will go.
02:40We are running a spare engine here.
02:42We don't have our best shot.
02:44And we're going to have to push it pretty hard to turn a respectable time.
02:49What other cars in the race are you primarily concerned with?
02:52Well, the Chaparral's.
02:54Jim Hall's cars.
02:57Far and away favorite, if they last,
02:59are the Jim Hall-designed Chaparral's.
03:02Hall won the American Road Racing Championship last year
03:05in his plastic-bodied automatic transmission Chaparral's.
03:08His practice time is a good nine seconds under the all-time record.
03:13But Hall has never subjected his lightweight Chevy-powered innovations
03:17to an endurance test before.
03:19Hall's strategy?
03:21Well, we intend to run with whoever's leading it, unless it's us,
03:26and we're going to take off.
03:27So that's the plan of the race.
03:29Where do you think your competition's going to come from?
03:31Well, it'll come from, of course, over the long haul,
03:33it'll come from Ferrari, probably.
03:35But the Ford GTs and Dan Gurney probably run pretty strong for a while.
03:39Jim, people inside the sport feel that a sports car can't go 12 hours here.
03:43As a builder of the Chaparral, what are your views on that opinion?
03:47Well, it's a long race, Chris.
03:49We've never tried to run the cars this distance before,
03:52but I think they're going to do it.
03:55Whether they can do it is the key question.
03:58The sports car's power to weight advantage is balanced on the other side
04:02by their unproven reliability in endurance races,
04:05and everyone's basing strategy on that factor.
04:09Ford GT and Cobra boss Carroll Shelby.
04:12We're going to keep the opposition humping,
04:14and we feel that by doing this that we have as good or better chance to finish
04:19than any of the other cars.
04:21The Chaparral's won't go flat out.
04:22They'll try to go as slow as they can.
04:25Dan will just go fast enough to keep them going
04:26at what we hope will be a braking pace for them.
04:29The Ford GTs will probably be running fairly closely behind them,
04:34and all we're doing with the Cobras is trying to stay ahead of the other GT cars
04:40so that we get the world's championship points.
04:42The factory Ferrari team has boycotted the race.
04:45Enzo Ferrari, whose cars have dominated the International Road Racing Championships
04:49and won here the last four years,
04:51officially withdrew when the very fast sports cars were admitted.
04:54Nevertheless, there are eight prototype Ferraris and one GT entered by private owners
04:59and a full contingent of factory mechanics to care for them.
05:02International stars Pedro Rodriguez and Graham Hill are driving a four-liter prototype,
05:07one of the most promising.
05:08But Hill, too, is aware of the sports car issue.
05:11We're not competitive with them.
05:13I think the only chance we have is, of course, to try and last out.
05:17It might be possible that we will last the race
05:20and they might be a little more fragile than us, being somewhat lighter,
05:23and with any luck, they might all break down.
05:26While the big iron pilots speculate on strategies to whip the chaparrales,
05:30lesser-powered GT drivers are concerned about their competition
05:33and prospects for victory.
05:35Joe Busetta, Porsche 904, Class 10.
05:37We want to finish and try to keep the revs down as low as possible.
05:42As far as the other competition in the race is concerned,
05:45of course, we're always worried about the other Porsches.
05:47However, the Fiat Abos, particularly the two-liter,
05:49have proven very fast so far
05:51and we're a little concerned about them.
05:53And, of course, the Alfas are always a threat
05:55because they usually seem to be in their finishing.
05:58A four-car Alfa Romeo team is headed by Italian champ Roberto Bussanello.
06:03What is his plan in the race?
06:12He said he wants to take the car at the end of the race.
06:16To finish the race and win in his class.
06:20Who does he see as his competition in class?
06:22Quali sono le macchine nella sua stessa categoria?
06:25La Lotus Elan, il Porsche Carrera e la Volvo.
06:31I think you hear what he said.
06:33I think so.
06:34The Porsche, the Lotus, and the Volvo is his competition.
06:37In the important Grand Touring Division I contest,
06:41a brace of M.G. midgets have been impressive in practice.
06:45And Triumph has a trio of its new Spitfires.
06:48There are class victories in the prototype category, too.
06:52Paddy Hopkirk, Austin Healy Sprite.
06:56Well, we're here to try and win our class,
06:58which is the prototype class from 1,000 to 1,300 cc.
07:01And if we can do that, we'll be very happy.
07:03But how do you go about doing that?
07:05Are you going to take it real easy?
07:06Oh, no, no, no, no way.
07:07We've got to go like hell, more or less.
07:09And let's hope everything holds together.
07:11In the heavyweight category, Shelby's sleek cobras dominate.
07:15A single Ferrari is his only challenge to a clean sweep of GT Division III
07:20and the important world championship points.
07:22Carroll Shelby has four Daytona Coupes
07:25carrying his hopes for an international win in the GT class,
07:28all using Castrol Oil exclusively.
07:31Adams and Spencer, pilot number 16.
07:33Bob Bondurant and Joe Schlesser are assigned to number 15.
07:37While careful mechanics labor over the number 14 of Johnson and Payne,
07:41and the number 12 of Leslie and Grant.
07:47The eve of race day is the moment of truth in the garages,
07:51the final chance to sort out the problems before the green flag falls.
07:58Shelby American Competitions Director Al Dowd
08:01supervises the efficient operation and works too.
08:09The paraphernalia of winning is everywhere.
08:18The intense rhythm of the work that goes on here
08:21has been born of many such evenings in many such garages.
08:29Champion driver Bob Johnson puts something of himself in the preparation of his car.
08:35Cobra, in just three short years,
08:38has become the big American name in world racing.
08:41And Castrol is proud to be associated with Carroll Shelby.
08:45Proud to be a part of this dedicated search for automotive excellence.
08:49Proud to have been chosen as the official Cobra Motor Oil.
08:53Proud and hopeful.
08:55Hopeful that after 12 hours of grueling competition,
08:57there will be a victory.
09:01Record crowd converges.
09:03The anticipated American challenge to Ferrari,
09:06the exciting intraclass struggles,
09:08the sheer excitement of Sebring
09:09has drawn more than 60,000 fans under sunny skies.
09:14The pressure builds.
09:16Ford GT pilot, Richie Ginther,
09:17enjoys a moment of peace and contemplation on the starting line.
09:23In a minute, one of the great moments in racing.
09:31Sebring, Florida.
09:32Minutes before 10 on a hot March morning.
09:3567 cars, 67 drivers,
09:4060,000 spectators all waiting for Jesse Coleman's flag.
09:47Jim Hall and Ronnie Hissom leap into the chaparral.
09:54Delmo Johnson's lightweight Corvette is first away
09:57and streaks past the slower starters.
10:10Ed Leslie's hit from behind.
10:12His engine catches fire.
10:14Phil Hill and crewmen are firemen now
10:16and quench the blaze.
10:21Johnson leads into the S's,
10:23but Ginther's Ford GT is hotly in pursuit.
10:33From the Goodyear blimp at the hairpin turn,
10:37Ginther takes advantage of the long warehouse straight
10:39to pass Johnson and take the lead.
10:51Ginther takes the pack to the Webster.
10:54A demanding hard right, hard left turn.
11:12Californian Richie Ginther locks on to first
11:14with a Fleet 4 GT
11:15and heads for the last leg
11:17to give him first lap honors.
11:18But he's got trouble.
11:20Cannon in the Lola,
11:21followed by the Chaparrales,
11:22takes over.
11:26A disgusted Ginther observes from the pit wall
11:29as mechanics check his complaint of braking problems.
11:32It's finally diagnosed as a stone jammed in a brake caliper.
11:35But Carroll Shelby's as impatient as Ginther
11:37and says so before the first lap leader
11:40can finally get back into action.
11:56Meantime, Gurney and Hall have passed Cannon's Lola
11:59and lead over the pack.
12:05The number 30 4-liter Ferrari,
12:07Rodriguez at the wheel,
12:09is third as they settle down in the early laps.
12:13Hall got past Gurney briefly in the back,
12:15only to be passed by Gurney's Ford Lotus
12:17on the long straight.
12:21and from the Goodyear blimp,
12:23we see the two of them
12:23take the timer stand turn
12:25and onto the pit straight
12:26amongst the tail enders.
12:47Gurney's pre-race plan,
12:49keep the Chaparrales honest,
12:50don't let them rest.
12:52Hall's plan,
12:53see what Gurney's up to,
12:54don't let him hold us back.
12:56And so the roadrunner chases the rabbit,
12:58in a high-speed duel of wits.
13:09Hall tires of the game
13:11and passes Gurney
13:12to take the lead
13:13going into the ninth lap.
13:21Into the second hour
13:23and Gurney stays in the same lap with Hall,
13:25keeping him in sight.
13:27and their pace is blistering
13:29and they quickly outdistance all pursuers.
13:31Only six cars on the same lap with them now.
13:39Retired Chaparral team driver Roger Penske
13:42helps in the pits
13:43and signals Hall,
13:44it's time for fuel.
13:46Gurney takes the lead now
13:47as Hall slows for his stop.
13:50Hall's crew is ready for a quick change.
13:53refuel and driver's change,
13:55all as planned.
13:56The boiling sun
13:58and 130 degree track temperatures
13:59show on Hall's face.
14:04But he's happy with the car
14:06as Hap Sharp takes over
14:07and chases after Gurney.
14:20Gurney's first now.
14:21Gurney's first now,
14:21but the quick Chaparral stop
14:23has kept Sharp in the same lap
14:24and he turns it on after Gurney.
14:26Sharp sets a race record
14:28of over 104 miles per hour.
14:40A half hour later
14:41in Gurney pits,
14:42but it's permanent.
14:43A broken fuel pump drive.
14:48Reporter Econimackie
14:49asked how the car performed
14:50to this point.
14:51That's beautiful.
14:53Trying out loud,
14:53we're getting wonderful mileage.
14:55All the temperatures
14:56are under control.
14:57The brakes are working great.
14:58It's just running great.
14:59Dan, it's early in the day.
15:01Will you move over
15:02to another car?
15:03No.
15:03No, I'm just going to watch.
15:05Go at home.
15:09While the Big Iron
15:10is settling the lead,
15:11the steady excitement
15:12in the lesser-powered
15:13Grand Touring category builds.
15:15The Pond Busetta Porsche 904
15:17followed closely
15:18by the Underwood-Class Porsche
15:20are first and second
15:21in GT Class 10,
15:23seven laps behind the leaders.
15:28Roberto Bussanello
15:29and Andre Diomedic
15:30lead Class 9
15:31in their Alpha GTZ.
15:34And the sleek Hedges
15:36Mack MG Midget
15:37leads the Triumph Spitfires
15:39in Classes 7 and 8.
15:44Up Kirk's prototype,
15:45Austin Healey,
15:46and the LeMond Healey prototype
15:48are midway in the pack
15:49showing surprising speed.
15:53Up front, meantime,
15:54Paul and Sharp
15:55are setting a blistering pace.
15:57Lap averages
15:58over 100 miles an hour.
15:59There are three laps,
16:0115 miles,
16:02ahead of the second-place
16:02Rodriguez Hill Ferrari prototype.
16:06The Miles McLaren Ford GT
16:08running third overall,
16:10second prototype
16:11in the same lap
16:11with number 30.
16:12First overall GT
16:14is the number 15,
16:15Bondurant Schleser Cobra,
16:17three laps behind.
16:19Piper and Mack's meantime
16:20in a fantastic run
16:21have moved from 54th
16:23at the start
16:24to 8th overall,
16:25four hours into the race.
16:27And Walt Hanskin
16:29in the 275 LM
16:30rear-engine Ferrari prototype
16:32is 11th overall
16:33with co-driver
16:34Mark Donahue.
16:36Paul and Sharp,
16:38fearful of the predicted
16:39afternoon showers,
16:40are starting to turn it on.
16:42They've increased their lead
16:43to five laps now.
16:52The Hissom-Jennings
16:53Chaparral pits.
16:54A voltage regulator
16:55has to be replaced.
16:56The only trouble
16:57for the Chaparral so far,
16:59and that may mean
17:00trouble for the lead car.
17:04The second-place car is in.
17:07Rodriguez has lost a gear
17:08and seems to be having
17:09gearbox difficulties.
17:12The four-liter prototype
17:13has been a steady second,
17:14but no match
17:15for the Chaparral.
17:20We're approaching
17:21the halfway point,
17:22and the weather
17:23becomes more threatening.
17:25Paul and Sharp
17:26decide on more insurance
17:27and lengthen their lead.
17:28Reporter Econimackie
17:30has the halfway statistics.
17:31The race is half over.
17:33Six hours have come and gone.
17:35And the ascent sun
17:36that prevailed early today
17:37has been replaced
17:38by ominous rain clouds.
17:40At the halfway mark,
17:41Jim Hall and his
17:42powerful Chaparral,
17:43leading with co-driver
17:45Hapsharp,
17:4626 miles ahead
17:48of the opposition,
17:49the second-place Ferrari
17:50driven by Pedro Rodriguez
17:51and Graham Hill of England.
17:53In third place,
17:54the Ford GT,
17:55handled by Ken Miles
17:56and Bruce McLaren.
17:58In the little cars,
17:59the production GTs
18:00that so many people
18:01are interested in.
18:02In class 7 and 8,
18:04the MG Midget,
18:05with Hedges and Mack
18:06doing the driving,
18:06is the leader.
18:07In class 9,
18:08it's the Alfa TZ
18:10leading a triumvirate
18:11of these little Italian cars
18:12with Francis Constant
18:13and Roland
18:14doing the driving.
18:15In class 10,
18:17dependable,
18:17streamlined Porsche,
18:18a 904
18:19with Pond of Holland
18:20and Biosetta
18:21of the United States
18:22at the wheel.
18:23It looks like
18:24the Chaparral strategy
18:25may have been warranted.
18:27Rain is definitely a threat.
18:30And there it is.
18:36The first overall GT Cobra
18:38of Schleser and Bondurant
18:39sloshes through the
18:40six-inch-deep river
18:41along the pit straight.
18:45It's the worst deluge
18:47ever recorded at Sebring.
18:48Drivers report sitting in water
18:50up to their elbows.
18:52The closed cars
18:53are doing the best of all.
18:55The Leslie Grant Cobra pit
18:57or ties up
18:59might be more accurate
18:59as mechanics
19:01wade into their jobs.
19:05Positions begin to change now.
19:07The number 30
19:08Rodriguez Hill Ferrari
19:09loses ground.
19:10More gearbox trouble.
19:12The tiny Austin Healy
19:13prototype finds the wet
19:14to its hikings
19:15and so do the Porsches.
19:21Paul's car can barely crawl.
19:23One lap took 12 minutes.
19:27The high-powered Schleser
19:29Bondurant Cobra
19:30watches a tiny Austin Healy
19:31Sprite
19:32sail by
19:33on the slick surface.
19:35And the Hedges Mack
19:36MG Midget
19:37moves easily through the wet
19:39as night begins to fall.
19:44The rain has slackened now
19:45but the new pit wall
19:47acts like a dyke
19:47keeping the straight
19:48deep enough to wade in.
19:53The Hall Sharp Car
19:54picks up the pace
19:55as the rain lets up.
20:00The Johnson Payne Cobra
20:02finds a pit stop
20:03just as frustrating
20:04as its teammate earlier
20:05and nightfall
20:06doubles the problem
20:07for the harassed driver.
20:09Carried pit workers
20:10and officials take stock.
20:12The track has dried some
20:13but positions have changed.
20:15The Hall Sharp Chaparral
20:16leads but now
20:17by six laps.
20:18The Rodriguez Hill Ferrari
20:20is out
20:20broken clutch.
20:22Miles and McLaren
20:23and the number 11 Ford GT
20:24are now second
20:25with the number 31
20:26Piper Mags Ferrari
20:27third
20:28after a magnificent
20:29stint in the rain.
20:31The number 15 Cobra
20:32of French champ
20:32Joe Schleser
20:33and Californian
20:34Bob Bondurant
20:35is fourth
20:36first GT.
20:37And the Pond
20:37and Buzetta Porsche 904

20:40McLaren in the second
20:41place GT
20:42gets his time
20:42from the pits
20:43as they plunge on
20:44through the darkness.
20:47The lead Chaparral
20:49is called in
20:49with just over
20:50an hour left.
20:54No lights
20:55as Sharp brings
20:56the Chaparral in.
20:57Same problem
20:58as with number 4
20:58earlier
20:59the voltage regulator.
21:14but Hall's crew
21:15is prepared
21:16and Jim
21:17takes the car out
21:18for the final hour
21:19comfortably
21:19in first place.
21:26The Piper Mags
21:28Ferrari
