00:00I've just come out of M&S's London Fashion Week debut, and the question here everyone
00:03is asking is whether high street fashion is taking over.
00:05I'm Daisy Lester, and I'm the standard shopping editor.
00:12M&S has had the most star-studded front row so far, indicative of its new fashion player
00:17status.
00:17There was David Gandy, Jessie Ware, Michelle Visage, fashion editors from publications
00:23like Vogue and the Sunday Times Style.
00:25There was just a good jubilant atmosphere, whereas some shows can feel a little bit
00:29snotty and serious.
00:30And above all, the affordability that comes with M&S's show is unrivalled, and the fact
00:34that fashion fans can watch it at home and buy these clothes immediately just sets it apart
00:39from everyone else on the schedule.
00:41We spoke to people at the fashion show, from guests to fashion insiders, to find out whether
00:45they think high street is the new high end.
00:48I think the more that we can push good fashion in the high street, it's for everyone.
00:53I must admit, it's changed my opinion on fashion a lot, because I think it's a balance.
00:58Don't get me wrong, one of my best friends is Luke Sweeney, and their brand is Tom Sweeney,
01:03which is obviously high end suits, fashion, and comfortable wear, and just love them to
01:07bits.
01:07But when you learn more about what M&S can do, and you go in there and you can get
01:11something
01:11so cool, so affordable, it actually makes you think, why do I spend so much money on
01:15clothes when I can get something as cool?
01:17I think that it's really great that cuts and the availability on the high street, it can
01:22be as good as high level fashion.
01:25And it's great to see it, actually, at fashion week, I find, it's actually inspiring.
01:29It's really nice to see accessible prices being shown, and British brands as well, like
01:35M&S is so stereotypically British.
01:38It's everywhere now, so I think it's definitely the way the market seems to be dictating where
01:43things are going.
01:44They're really good at kind of branching the gap between doing really good basics and keeping
01:49on trend, and I think that that's something that's really important to everyone, is being
01:52able to have a place that you can shop accessibly for things that are current, but also be able
01:56to go and get kind of like absolute basics.
01:59I try not to spend too much money on clothes, but sometimes I feel weary of that, and afterwards
02:03I think, why don't I just go M&S and buy cheaper?
02:05I do think what we do nowadays is, we style High Street with accessories, which are maybe
02:11fashion-like brands, and like that we actually make looks from High Street look a lot more
02:15high-end.
02:16But I do think that people will always want to buy into the luxury.
02:19We've seen trends come down from designer brands into M&S, for example, like we just saw
02:24today.
02:25I think that's really cool, and it's accessible, people can buy into it.
02:28I think it's the ease in which you can get them, and I think the quality most important
02:33is there.
02:33At the end of the day, High Street does it just as good as designers nowadays, don't
02:36they?
02:37I mean, literally, I'm wearing head-to-toe marks and sparks, and you wouldn't be able
02:40to tell.
02:40I don't think.
02:41At least.
02:41No.
02:42It was really cool.
02:43So that was a lovely occasion, and nice people in there.
02:46And it was a nice way to spend an afternoon.
02:48So people are going to other ones now.
02:49I want to go home and have a cappuccino.
02:51The fashion models marked a return to form for British fashion.
02:54Erin O'Connor, Jodie Kidd walked to cheers and whoops from the crowd, and all the clothing
03:01was wearable.
03:02And there's an excitement that comes from watching a fashion show that you feel like
03:05you could instantly buy and instantly incorporate into your own wardrobe, rather than waiting
03:10six months for the spring and summer collections to officially launch.
03:16The retailer is marking 100 years of MLS fashion, and it's appearing on the schedule alongside
03:20Burberry, Adem, Simone, Rocha, and it seems like there now is a place for High Street alongside
03:25these heritage houses.
