00:13Hello and welcome to Gangs All Here. My name is Ryan Sampson. He's our Jets beat writer Brian
00:16Costello. Today is Monday, September 21st. Kaz, the Jets are coming off an absolutely brutal
00:2220-17 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers to go to 1-1 on the season. I am anxious
00:29to
00:29hear your thoughts about this one. But before we get to any of it, as always, how are you doing
00:34today, sir? I'm good. Good to have a home game, Ryan. Good to wake up in my house after a
00:41game.
00:41So happy, happy to be home. Now two more road trips coming up. Yeah, look, Detroit and Chicago,
00:48those are the Midwest teams, obviously. But yesterday was a slop fest in just terms of the
00:52weather too, which was, you know, we talked about it on the preview show last week about how
00:57the conditions and the weather could really play a factor. And I thought they did for
01:01the most part to start the game and they made their adjustments. But when you're looking at
01:06this whole game, Kaz, from start to finish, what's the biggest thing that's standing out
01:12to you right now?
01:15The biggest thing that stands out to me, Ryan, is I think, and this is not just Jets fans,
01:20this entire NFL, you want to look at one week and project it to the next week, right? So it's
01:29okay.
01:30The Jets offensive line played great against Tennessee. They're going to, you just kind of
01:34assume, okay, they're going to play great against Green Bay. And that doesn't happen. And it's not,
01:39like I said, it's not just the Jets. You can, you look all around the league, there's crazy results
01:44all the time that make no sense. And that's kind of the beauty of the NFL from like the macro
01:50perspective. It's painful for you guys who are fans of a specific team, but one week doesn't
01:56mean anything for the next week. And it's kind of crazy like that, right? Like that, that's why
02:00betting is hazardous to your health. So yeah, so I just thought the Jets looked like a very
02:06different team yesterday than they did against Tennessee. And some of that's Green Bay's credit.
02:11Some of that was the weather, some of it's on the Jets and, you know, they couldn't run the ball
02:16that just offense really wasn't effective all day. They didn't take, took a few shots, but none of
02:22them really worked. The most effective shot was a pass interference call. Defensively, they were
02:28great until the final eight minutes, you know, or so of the game of a regulation. And they even got
02:36to stop then. And then they just couldn't, couldn't stop in overtime. So that was just sort of reminder
02:41to me, Ryan. And I think everyone wants the, the development of the Jets to be a straight line,
02:48the improvement of the Jets to be a straight line up. And this was a reminder. It's not going to
02:52be,
02:52I think they're a better team, but there's going to be steps forward and steps back all season long.
02:57Yeah. I think, you know, it's, it's a very, it's just, it's a smart way to, to watch and, and,
03:05and appreciate what you're seeing in front of you and understand that, that there is steps to all
03:11this. I think I agree with you. Yes. The team is definitely better than last year. They're more
03:17talented. You could see it on the field, but yesterday was a day where if you were trying to,
03:24and this is from my view, a little bit, when you're trying to evaluate the coaching staff,
03:29and if this, this guy's the right, right guy to lead you into the future, I don't think that was
03:35a good step for him. That was a really bad step for him in terms of the, terms of the
03:39mismanagement
03:40at the end. So talk, talk me through what you saw and how you view Aaron Glenn's management of
03:48yesterday's game. Yeah, I think there are, he's going to get to make 17 arguments to be here in
03:552027, right? Aaron Glenn. And I thought week one was a positive argument for him. Week two is not a
03:59positive argument for him. For me, Ryan, I look at it more of the macro than the micro. The micro
04:04is
04:05going forward on fourth and one, deciding to kick forward on fourth and one, going forward on fourth
04:10and one, not taking a timeout at the end of the, at the end of the game, opting to take
04:16the ball to
04:17start overtime. And like, I get it. We can analyze all these decisions. I didn't think any of his
04:21decision-making there was egregious. I think you can make a case. I didn't like not taking a timeout
04:27at the end of the regulation. That was the one I liked the least. I felt, I feel like you
04:32got to
04:32give yourself another possession there and give your offense a chance because a field goal wins
04:35the game. But the fourth downfalls, I was with them kick. I was with them kicking it to go up
04:41two
04:41scores. I would have probably punted from midfield, but again, I'm not like, oh my God, that was an awful
04:46decision. Didn't work. So it looks really bad. And the overtime is 50-50 to, I, you know, I talked
04:52to a bunch of analytics people, coaches and stuff, and they're all like, there is no answer there.
04:57There's, there's, there's very different schools of thought and there's not enough data yet.
05:02So I'm not killing him on those, Ryan. Where I'm at is like, your team was up by 10 in
05:08the fourth
05:09quarter and you blew it. You're the head coach. Like you're wearing this. Like that was not a good
05:14reflection of Aaron Glenn's leadership coaching that they blew this game. Um, you've got to be
05:19able to close out these games. And so, yeah, I think this was a really negative game for Aaron
05:25Glenn. And I don't want anyone to get me wrong. Cause I'm not screaming as loud as some people
05:29about it. I gave him an F in the paper. Like it was, it was bad, but I think it's,
05:35I think,
05:36you know, the Monday morning quarterback going on today at every single decision, I don't think
05:40other than the end of the game, I didn't like the end of the first half either, by the way.
05:44No, it was very conservative at the end of the first half as well. Very conservative. Yeah.
05:48I get what you said. I got his explanation for that a little bit more on, but I don't
05:52understand the end of the game still. I don't understand. So can you walk me through? Like
05:56I get what he's trying to say, but I don't, I don't think it makes sense really in today's
06:02NFL. I think you have to be more aggressive in those situations because you are trying to win
06:07football games. You know, this more than anyone, like winds winds are hard to come by.
06:12I thought he coached scared. Yeah. I mean, he was scared of the Packers and he, it seemed to me,
06:20he, he's, he's, he's mentioning the logo, which is the 50 yard line. Right. So he seemed to think
06:25like once they got to the logo, he didn't want them to punt. He didn't want to force them to
06:31punt
06:32because the jets would have been backed up, which is inside their own 10 yard line.
06:37Right. Yeah. Inside their own 10, let's say. So if Packers had two timeouts, so that could blow
06:44up on them. I get what he's saying, but I think your coach is scared there. I think you're, you
06:48have to, the other philosophy is like, Hey, the guy got tackled about like one or two left. If you
06:53slam a timeout there, you got about a minute to force them. They have to make a decision whether
06:58what they're going to do, if they're going to go forward or punt it, you get the ball back. Let's
07:03say you have 45 seconds to do something. And I think with the way the referees were throwing
07:08flags yesterday, there's a good chance to get a pass interference. If you chuck, you know,
07:12I might even just say, you know, throw it as far as you freaking can there and try to get
07:18a pass interference. And if you do throw an interception, you're hoping it doesn't kill
07:22you. Um, I do think Ryan, they'll never admit this, but I think in the back of his
07:28mind, Isaiah Williams muffin, two puns had to be a factor, right? If he must upon inside
07:33the 10 there, that's bad. So he'll never say that he's going to throw a player under
07:38the bus. But I do think now, if that is a worry, you could just do a pump block in
07:43that
07:43situation, send 11 guys and let the ball fall wherever it may. You're in control offensively
07:49with what you're with how aggressive you're going to be with getting the ball. I just
07:54want to maximize the number of possessions I have, Ryan. That's, that's in my mind. And
07:59they, they just didn't do that. And I think even Matt LaFleur after the game said he was
08:04kind of surprised. I'm not sure what the, I didn't see the press comment. I read a transcript,
08:07so I'm not sure what the specific question was, but he, he said it caught him kind of off
08:10guard that, that end of the game situation there. Um, I mean, they got a Hail Mary, they got
08:15a Hail Mary chance at the end cause that's what Glenn ultimately gave. And, and, and
08:19you were just mentioning the pass interference thing. It could take one Hail Mary with the
08:23pass interference and you just lost the game because you didn't call time out.
08:28Yeah. Yeah. And I mean, you know, Aaron Glenn said like that, that's, he said that play
08:33didn't really, you know, influence the outcome of the game. Like, and it didn't, they didn't
08:38lose the game cause of that play, but they didn't, they had a chance to win the game there
08:42and they didn't really take it.
08:43Right. And that's the part of coaching scared where you're not giving your team the full
08:47opportunity to, to actually win yesterday. Uh, especially the first half too, right?
08:53Yes. And that's where, so this is the part of the next, this is the next part of the discussion,
08:58right? I, we had discussed in the off season, Hey, this is a new role for Aaron Glenn. Now
09:02that he is the head coach, he has to now call the defense. And in that mindset cause I wonder,
09:08it's like, he just got a great stop considering they didn't get the fourth and one conversion
09:13on, we can get into that in a second, but, uh, they get the great stop. And now you have
09:19to flip your mentality of, I just got to stop as a defensive coordinator. Oh wait, I also
09:24have to manage now. And Oh, we, we have two timeouts. Let's call one. Cause we can get the
09:28ball back. Instead. I think he was still in that. We just got the stop. We're good. We're
09:33going to go to overtime. Like, that's what we're playing for. And I just wonder for you,
09:38like, are we, can we have confidence for him to grow from this in the whole management
09:44of, cause I think he, he still called a good defense yesterday, but still a really good
09:48defense. Right. But they still, he still mismanaged the actual game itself as a head
09:52coach. So like that, yeah, it's a concern of him calling the plays and trying to do that.
09:57Right. Like Mike McDonald's, the first guy who ever won a Superbowl calling the defensive
10:01plays, but it'd be the primary defensive play caller. So it's a difficult thing because we've
10:05talked about it when you're the offensive play caller, like you're Andy Reid or pick,
10:09you know, Ben Johnson or whoever, a lot of these game management situations come up more
10:14when you're on offense. And so like, you can kind of call it better. Um, I thought, yeah,
10:21I, he, he, I'm not sure if that was a factor. He does have people in his ear. I've seen
10:24this
10:25like idea of like, he needs to hire someone. They have a game management coordinator named
10:28John Berger who's in his ear. So it's not like they're just like flying by the seat of
10:33their pants or they he's, and he has, I think a setup around him. You know, that's what Brian
10:39Duker is there to do is kind of make the defensive adjustments when the defense comes off the field
10:44while, so Aaron Glenn can concentrate on what's going on offensively on the field and manage
10:48the game. But yeah, like just, like I said, I didn't think every decision was a bad one,
10:55but they all, it just all piled up and it didn't work. So it looks just awful today. Right? Like
11:00it just looks bad and I get it. And yeah. Can you learn from it? Sure. And I think he's
11:05shown
11:06an ability to do that. I thought last year, Denver was a disaster in London game management wise.
11:12I don't remember instances after that, where I walked away going, Oh my God, they really botched
11:17this. And as a matter of fact, I thought the win in Cincinnati last year, he did, he did a
11:22really
11:22nice job managing that game. And so I think he has shown he can do it. I think there's a
11:28narrative
11:28out there that he's just, he's terrible every single game. And I haven't seen that.
11:33Yeah. I mean, there weren't many opportunities. Like you said, the Bengals game was last year for
11:38Aaron Glenn to be able to prove how he is as a game manager. I want to ask you, and
11:45this is something
11:45that was really a pain point for me on the offensive side of the ball. First Geno Smith, we got
11:52the
11:52bad Geno yesterday, in my opinion. I think he was holding the ball a little too long. He looked
11:58indecisive. He wasn't sliding his protections, right? It felt like he was also trying to make
12:02adjustments to the line of scrimmage last second, multiple times. What did you see from Geno yesterday?
12:09Yeah, it wasn't good. He didn't turn the ball over. So I'm hesitant to say really bad Geno,
12:16like the really bad Geno is three picks in a game, that kind of stuff, which he's done through his
12:20career. So he didn't turn the ball over. So I give him credit there. But I agree with you. He
12:27looked indecisive. He was holding on to the ball. And yeah, there was Aaron Rodgers flashbacks with
12:34the play clock running down. And in fact, they burned one time out early in the game in the
12:38first quarter because of one of those situations. So it just looked like they were just completely
12:43out of rhythm all day, the offense. Other than that one series, the first scoring series,
12:48I thought they looked good. And there was a play here or there, but it just, just seemed
12:52like they were kind of in a funk all day. Yeah. And the fact that they had that opportunity
12:58late in the game, they're driving, they're at midfield. I like the, I like the decision
13:03to go for it because you are trying to go for the win fourth and one. However, cause I, whatever
13:09hair I have left, I pull out when I see a coordinator call a shotgun play on fourth and one,
13:15it's,
13:17it's from my, my point of view, you're moving the ball five yards further back from the line
13:21of scrimmage on shotgun. And that makes it harder for you to now develop that one yard
13:25you need for the game. Can we kill Frank Reich on that play call? Like what, what did
13:31you make of that play call itself on fourth and one? Yeah, I'm with you. I hate the shotgun
13:37on short yardage situations. The goal line drives me crazy. They, they do it in the goal line
13:42a lot. I do think they had a fourth and one in Tennessee that they did a shotgun snap
13:46and it worked so that they're going to point to that. Obviously my bigger issue there, Ryan
13:52is just the running game was terrible all day. Like it really, other than that, there was
13:56one outside run by Brees and, you know, Isaiah Williams had a run like outside of that. It
14:03really, they, they were not doing much between the tackles and talking to the offensive lineman.
14:07And the Packers were running a lot of run stunts and it, I think it really screwed the jets
14:11up because they weren't able to do that double team blocking that we saw in Tennessee.
14:15It kind of neutralized that neutralized pulling. And so that would be where I'm hesitant. And
14:21that's why I would have punted there and played defense. Cause I think you're playing defense
14:25tremendously and I would just live to fight another day there, but I get going for it.
14:30And yeah, I mean, it's, it obviously it didn't work. So they're, they're going to get ripped
14:35for it, but I, yeah, I do not enjoy shotgun snaps and short yardage.
14:40Yeah. Uh, rough, rough, uh, play call there. And then overall your, your, your best weapons,
14:47you would argue when it comes to Garrett Wilson, who only ended up with six catches, uh, six
14:52targets, I believe yesterday, uh, seven targets, five catches, Isaiah Williams ends up with six
14:58targets yesterday. Jeremy record had three, I believe, but yeah, you didn't target 10. I think
15:04Mitchell was great yesterday, but Mason Taylor and Kenyan Sadiq, they kind of played a little
15:11behind record in terms of getting them the ball in the game yesterday. And I felt like Garrett was
15:17not a focal point in that game yesterday too. Yeah. But you tell me, was there, is there something
15:22else that was going on where they were really taking away those types of weapons? Or do you feel
15:27like maybe they got away from what we really is supposed to work where you get the ball to your
15:31best player's hands? Yeah. It wasn't anything I could see a lot watching live. I haven't gone
15:36through the whole game yet. Um, you know, but yeah, I'm with you. They've got to get the ball
15:42to Garrett. You got to figure out a way to get the ball to Garrett. You know, they're trying to
15:45take them away, move them around, do something, figure out a way to get in the ball. And then
15:49the one that was the killer to me, when you talk about Sadiq and, um, Mason Taylor, they had the
15:56five,
15:56the zero five personnel in. Right. And they ran a screen to Rucker. Slip screen. So it's
16:03kind of, you're kind of like, and I gave Frank Wright a lot of credit for Tennessee. Cause I
16:08thought he called like a real logical game and like, sort of like what I like, it's like, okay,
16:12this is working. Let's just do it. Let's not outsmart. Everybody felt like he was trying to
16:17outsmart everybody yesterday. It's like, Oh, Sadiq is on the field. And maybe Sadiq was lined up in the
16:21backfield. Mason Taylor's on the field. Oh, let's throw it to Rucker. They'll never think that's
16:26coming. Well, yeah, because Jeremy Rucker is a fantastic blocker. I think he's a really good
16:30third tight end. He's not an explosive player like Mason Taylor and Kenyon Sadiq are. And
16:35you know, um, so yeah, I, I think, I do think Frank Wright, when he probably woke up this morning
16:42or he probably didn't sleep last night, he's probably said, I screwed up not getting these
16:46guys the ball a little bit more. And sometimes that's on the quarterback too, Ryan, to be fair.
16:51So, but you know, a screen passes is on the coordinator, but there's probably some situations
16:56where maybe Gino didn't look for Garrett or, or these other guys. Um, but something they gotta
17:01get fixed. Yeah. They, uh, the plays that I noticed, and I've been watching the film this
17:05morning is there was the second and nine screen that you, you called about a record. And then
17:10the other Oh five personnel, they called on the first drive where they ran this bubble screen
17:14to Kenyon Sadiq, who makes a hurdle on the defender. And you're like, Ooh, that's impressive.
17:18And it's like, maybe we should get the ball into that guy's hands more just because he
17:22is special when you get the ball in his hands, just because the athletic traits that he has.
17:27Yeah. And I think Ryan, like he's shown, he's played these last two years, he's played a
17:31lot of plays, so he must be healthy. Uh, cause that was the concern coming in. Was he fully
17:35healthy? Was he, did he know the playbook for it's time to like, time to unleash him in my
17:41opinion? Like, let's, let's see him run the ball. Let's line him up at tailback and hand
17:45them the ball or, you know, uh, run, run more end rounds to them. Like they use them
17:50as a actual decoy on the Garrett touchdown, but I'd love to just see, open up the Kenyon
17:56Sadiq playbook now a little bit more and let's, let's see what he can do.
18:00Dare I say on fourth and one, maybe put them under center and let them take a direct snap
18:05and run for the first down. Like there's, you're talking about, you know, understand.
18:10Yeah. Like, uh, yeah. Like a tush push type of, yeah, you can do that with him. Like
18:14he has that ability. He's a strong kid and he's super fast as well. Yeah. Um, cause
18:19let's flip it over to the defensive side of the ball because it was a really good
18:21game. I mean, they held the Packers under 200 yards. I think Jordan Love had 65 passing
18:26yards all the way through the third quarter almost. Um, until before they finally started
18:30getting things going, uh, it's a better defense. And, and, and I think what's nice is
18:36that you're seeing the pieces that Glenn and Mugia targeted in the off season are
18:39really are helping you out, especially Demario Davis. Uh, what did you see defensively
18:44yesterday from the jets? Uh, and, and your key takeaways from that? Yeah. The
18:49biggest thing was the secondary held up, right? Yeah. I thought this was a big
18:52second. Like I thought the defense was going to be a bigger question mark than
18:55it's been. Um, they played very well. They've been much better than I expected.
19:00And the secondary I thought was going to get, could get shredded by the Packers
19:05honestly coming in. And I thought the safeties played really well. Like Cisco had
19:09a good game. Yeah. Um, he was all over the place and I think Belton was held up
19:13and, you know, Thomas and Stevens, they both got penalties, but they, they played
19:18pretty well. Brownlee had a killer penalty at the end. Um, you know, but they, they
19:23overall, the secondary has not been a liability. Like I thought it might be. Now
19:28this is another step up in class this week, right? The lions, the lions have
19:32weapons that the Packers don't, uh, especially with Josh Jacobs being hurt.
19:36The Packers are kind of, we're kind of hindered a little bit there, but jar
19:39golf with Gibbs and, and on raw, you know, that that's going to be a different,
19:44different class this week, but it's been good. And, you know, they got five fumbles
19:51and only recovered one, but they're, they are hitting hard. They're punching the ball.
19:55They are, they are causing the takeaways. You know, if you've never watched jets
20:00football before and you just a football fan in general, you'd go, well, that's
20:05going to even out as the season goes on. Like they're going to have games where
20:08they recover all five of them. Those of you who watched jets football, no,
20:13that's not how this works. So, but at least they're causing fumbles, Ryan.
20:18Yeah. Their aggressiveness is really impressive. I think their pursuit to
20:21tackling is much improved from last year. Uh, and the angles they take one thing on
20:27the secondary as well. And I think you just met AZ Thomas. I think yesterday was
20:31like, that was a step. If you want to talk about progression for me, yeah, he
20:35actually looks like a guy that you can count on going forward. Like there was the
20:39question of who's the cornerback to on this defense, right? Cause AZ Thomas is
20:43starting to look the part right now.
20:45He is. Yeah. And he's a, he's a good tackler, Ryan. He's made some really nice
20:49tackles, like good open field tackler. And he has played well. Was the PI call a
20:54bad call, Ryan? I think so. I can watch that. So I watched it. I know it was an
20:58underthrown ball. So I, I rewatched it. And my thought on this was, and this is
21:05something I think AZ's got to learn. And I don't know if I know Glenn obviously is
21:09preaching to these guys because Glenn was a ball hawk himself. I just would love AZ
21:13Thomas. He turns himself over when he sees the receiver looking at the ball and
21:18he looks quickly to see that the ball is actually coming to him. But then he
21:21turns around and does the hands up to say, I'm going to play the safe mode of
21:26you're not going to get this ball. It's underthrown. And I don't think it was
21:29past interference to be Frank. Like, I don't think he really impeded the
21:32receiver's ability because the ball was off to the right. Like I would say like
21:36three or four yards. So that was a bad call by the referees, but I would just
21:40love to see him. Like that was an underthrown ball. Turn around, man. Make a
21:43play on the ball. You, he had a full opportunity to, I think, make an
21:47interception or at least a past deflection without causing the quote unquote
21:51past interference. So maybe it's something you can learn. Make a what? Make a
21:56past interference. I know. No, no. The first, the first thing you said, I
22:00don't, I've never heard that term. Interception? What's that? What does that
22:02look like? Man. 19 and counting, Ryan. 19 games. 20 is 20 be a nice round number if
22:09they don't get one this week. Does it go back to, so you might know this more than
22:12anyone like last year, 17 games were two to start. Did it, did they get a
22:16interception in the last game of 2024? Yes, they did for you. Ashton Davis,
22:22Ashton Davis had two that day against Snoop Huntley, Ryan. There's some
22:27trivia for you. Snoop Huntley. How's Frankie doing, Ryan? I just want to check. I
22:35just, you know, you always ask me how I'm doing. How are you and Frankie
22:38doing? How, what was the temperature like last night on the podcast after the
22:41game? Hot. Not good. Frankie wants him to lose though. He must have been happy,
22:48right? Yeah. I mean, he wasn't happy, but I think I was more, I was more
22:52emotional because again, I, I don't know if I have trust in this coach to
22:57actually build and progress into, into being a good head coach. Like, I think
23:03let me, let, let me speculate Ryan with like, when they get the turnover at the
23:1018 there, right? Are you like, I'm all right. They're going into score here.
23:15Like, Holy crap. Like they're going to win this game. Yeah. And this team might
23:19be, this team might be a nine and 18. This team might be like, this team might be
23:24much, this, this isn't, we're not six or seven wins. We're talking maybe nine wins
23:29here, 10 wins here. Like, were you daring to dream at that point? I don't know about
23:32that. I wasn't going like full bore, like, Oh my God, they're going to be a great team
23:36this year. What I was thinking is, is like, this is a sloppy game. It's a lot of
23:41penalties. It's not a great watch. The fact that the jets had two really solid
23:45drives where they did score the touchdowns and now they got the ball and a
23:48turnover. Finally, I agree with you. Kick, kick the, kick the field goal and get the
23:52three points. You're up two scores. The defense has been lights out. The problem
23:56I had was as soon as they kick that field goal cause they let the Packers go right
23:59down the field. And I think he took, I think Aaron Glenn actually took his foot
24:03off the gas pedal a little bit. Wasn't as aggressive on the blitz. Wasn't as
24:07aggressive at getting after Jordan love. And that was too easy of a drive for the
24:11Packers to go down and score the touchdown. Then from there, it snowballed with
24:15the, with the mismanagement of the clock, not being aggressive or, or being
24:18conservative and other parts. And I just can't, can't
24:22believe he's still defending his decisions from yesterday in today's press
24:25conference saying it was the right decision to not call a timeout there at
24:29the end. The overtime thing, I think, while I, I'm interested to hear more
24:33about your thoughts on like, there's 50, 50 on it. I think, I think a lot, a lot
24:38of people on my side of the aisle here would agree that you, you, you play
24:42defense, you kick the ball because you know, the situation, then if you get the
24:47stop, you, you, all you need is a field goal to win. If you get, if they score a
24:51touchdown, you need a touchdown. If they score a field goal, you can, you know,
24:54you have to go for it on fourth down. Exactly. You own, I get both sides, but
24:58here, Ryan, it's a 10 minute quarter, right? Which I think changed things
25:01drastically from 15 minutes, 10 minute quarter. You got to figure there's
25:05going to be three possessions in overtime if, if nobody wins it. So if you take
25:10the ball first, now you're giving yourself two possessions instead of one.
25:14Right? Like, I think that's the math in your head is you're like, we saw it last
25:19night with, with the calls of the chiefs, right? The chiefs got two
25:22possessions. So yeah, I, I, I know. I just, I talked to people who spend much
25:28more time on this than I do. And they were, they told me like, don't, you
25:32can't kill them. Like it's, it's too 50, it's too much 50, 50. Everyone has a
25:37different philosophy. Um, sometimes too, there's factors about the, like the team
25:42you're playing or you're home or away, that kind of stuff. And they made this
25:46decision, Ryan on Tuesday, right? Like this is not, they, they have all the jets.
25:52I know jets fans are very happy that there's a lot of analytics people in the
25:55building now, right? This was an analytics decision. I don't think Aaron Glenn
25:59overrode his analytics team on this. So they have all that. This is what the jets
26:03analytics people told them to do. So that, that one, that's the one I'm really not
26:08killing him. I get the, and this reaction is, but I think that's a decision that was
26:12made in a conference room on Tuesday of what they were doing there.
26:17I hear you, but I think that's part of the analytics where they're, they're,
26:19they're too much in your, I know they make that decision on Tuesday. It's like
26:23baseball with the lineups. They know we can advance. I just, there's, there has
26:27to be a part of the feel and of it all. Um, but you're not really saying feel
26:32right. You're saying like, I'm saying always want this. I would always want the
26:36second. Exactly. Because I think that puts you in a better spot. That's you're
26:40actually talking analytics. Like you're talking that, right? Yeah, maybe. Yeah,
26:43you're right. I just, it was a very frustrating day because it's, it's the
26:49flippidness of I'm conservative at the end of the half. I'm conservative in the
26:54terms of not calling a timeout, but I'm aggressive on the fourth and one and
26:57going for it. I'm conservative on kicking the three points instead of going
27:02for it on fourth down. When you want to go up two scores, it just was a lot of
27:05back and forth where you're like, pick a lane, pick somewhere where you want,
27:10you want to, you want to really go with this team. Special teams cause rough
27:14yesterday. I mean, they got outclassed on special teams yesterday. Sky more had
27:20some really good returns yesterday. I think that the Marcelino McCurry ball and,
27:26and, uh, Kiko injuries really hurt them on special teams. But with the Isaiah
27:31Williams punt fumbles that you had mentioned before, and the fact that they
27:33weren't great on coverage on the kickoff, not a great showing for the special
27:37teams yesterday for the jets. Yeah. I mean, and that, that, that return set up
27:41the game tying field goal. So you stop them there. Who knows what happens when
27:45you're playing defense. Maybe they don't march down the field and tie the game
27:48there for penalties, which rightly penalties on punts. Like can you shoot me in
27:55the head? Every punt, there's a penalty on somebody, not, I'm not talking jets.
27:59Every game I watch, there's a holding call on somebody like they got to ask me
28:03something there, but yeah, rare, bad day for, for Chris Banjo's group. They, they,
28:09they did not have a good day at all. Um, so, you know, and I think, like I said
28:14before, I think that may have been a factor in Aaron Glenn's head at the end
28:17of the game. The, the trust Isaiah Williams with his heels at the 10 yard line
28:22when he hasn't been catching the ball all day.
28:25One thing Frankie and I killed a Glenn for yesterday as the defensive coordinator
28:29was dropping David Bailey in coverage multiple times. I mean, you had warned us
28:35saying, Hey guys, it's going to happen. It happened quite a few times yesterday
28:39cause where I'm like, yeah, you're taking your best pass rusher. You could argue
28:42and dropping him in coverage on third down the actual down that you want him to
28:47be rushing the passer. I just don't understand how as a defensive coordinator,
28:51you're okay with calling a play like that.
28:54I'm with you. I asked him the question. If you remember after Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh,
28:59he has the sack on third down. And then the next third down, they dropped him in
29:03the coverage. And I asked Glenn after I'm like, people sitting on the couch are not
29:08going to like seeing David Bailey drop in the coverage on third down. He's like, he
29:12said, well, he's going to have to do it in the season. We got to practice it. And I
29:15told him, I go, we'll revisit it during the season because I like, yeah, I'm with
29:20you. I, we haven't, we had, you know, there was a million topics to hit. So we
29:24didn't hit that one with him. Um, I imagine we will, I think he's going to talk
29:30about him being a great athlete and you know, you, you obviously we've seen guys
29:36like Andrew Van Ginkle comes to mind, right? He drops into coverage and gets
29:39interceptions. It feels like all the time. So it can be an effective deception type
29:44of thing is like the, the, you know, if they think he's coming on third down, cause
29:48he's such a good pass rusher. And then he drops, maybe the quarterback doesn't
29:51anticipate it and throws a pick, but yeah, I, I'd like to see David Bailey running at
29:57the quarterback on third down. Uh, there was some, and it gets overshadowed just
30:01because we're talking about all these other things that happened in this game
30:05yesterday. But, uh, a lot of jets fans, I feel like we're going hard after not
30:09just Bailey, but the entire jets defense, not getting as much pass rush and
30:12pressure on Jordan love. Did you feel the same way about that game yesterday?
30:19No, I thought, I thought they were, they were doing a pretty good job against it.
30:23Uh, I thought Will McDonald didn't look right to me. Remember he hurt his ankle
30:27Thursday in practice. So he just didn't seem as explosive as he had been at week
30:33one in Tennessee. Um, I thought Green Bay's game plan coming out was to get the
30:40ball out of Jordan loves hands very quickly, right? They're coming off a
30:43disaster of a game against the Vikings when he was hit 15 times, he was sacked
30:48four times. So early on, I mean, it was a ton of screen passes. There was a ton of
30:51just quick passes by Jordan love. You're not going to get a pass rush on those
30:55plays. I thought the jets did an excellent job of rallying to the ball in those
30:59plays of sniff, sniffing them out and stopping them later in the game. Was he
31:04drawing, he was probably dropping back a little bit more. Uh, I'd have to look at it
31:08again, but it didn't strike me watching it live, Ryan, like, Oh my God, they're
31:11just, he has all day to throw. I didn't feel like that at all. Yeah. The jets
31:15ended up with three sacks. The one, uh, the third one being at the end of the, uh,
31:19regulation where they're, they, they attempt to hail Mary. And the first one was
31:22kind of weird. The first one was the first play of the game where Bailey gets
31:25the sack right back on. Yeah. Bailey got the sack. Yeah. Yeah. So, um, but you know,
31:29Juwan Briggs really, really nice to see him get in there, get the pressure when
31:33Anyamata went out with the injury. Uh, Briggs comes in. I thought he actually had a nice
31:36positive day yesterday. Uh, in terms of the stats though, cause just for what
31:41happened yesterday, the jets technically were only accounted for eight pressures
31:45on, uh, Jordan loves day yesterday with, uh, 30, 35, 32 dropbacks. They only had
31:51eight pressures. Do you have the blitz percentage? Uh, yes, I can actually pull
31:56it up one second. So the jets on defense when they had the pet, you really just
32:01want defense. And when there was a blitz coming on QB blitz. So Jordan love
32:11on the, against the blitz, 10 dropbacks, he was blitzed. He was five for nine,
32:1615 yards passing and the touchdown. Yeah. So that's when I think maybe it blitz a
32:21little bit more, right? They, they struggled against the blitz last week. I'm not
32:24saying it'd be Brian Flores, but you probably could have blitzed a little bit
32:28more on that. And that, that would have made the pass rush look a little
32:31better. Yeah, no doubt. Uh, look cause I thank you for coming on here. Uh, you
32:37obviously, like you said, you're, you're into the macro view of this all trying to
32:40keep it in perspective for jets fans like myself. Uh, I wear it a little bit more
32:44just because that was a game they should have won. There's a game that they should
32:48have won. They should be two and O this morning. And we, we, I think we'll all be
32:53talking about, you know what, maybe they got a coach. Maybe they got something going
32:58here a little bit. Yeah. Well, you'd also be playing with house money now going into
33:02these two games, right? Which don't look as formidable as they did a month ago, right?
33:07The lines defense is messed up. Caleb Williams is hurt. So they got chances in these games.
33:11If you're going in two and O you're like, okay, even they lose these two games. You come
33:15back against Cleveland at two and two, you're happy. Now, if it's one and three trouble, but
33:20if they, they can steal one of these games, you still feel good, right? And I mean, poor
33:24Ryan said his heart hurts folks. His heart hurts from his game. You know, that's the
33:29beauty of it. I don't have to watch with my heart. So poor Ryan is heartbroken. I can't
33:34imagine having my heart tied to the jets. So I feel bad for all of you. I feel bad for
33:39all of you who have that going on in your life and your, your Mondays are dictated by this
33:45team. It's a very difficult place to be. It's frustrating, man. It's frustrating.
33:50Uh, big ships turn slow. They were in the game, Ryan. They were in the game, right?
33:55They played competent football. It wasn't just, they were in the game. They were winning
33:59the entire game. They were winning the game that dictated the game. Your, your colleague
34:03Rich Cimini with that tweet yesterday, the fact that the jets made history. And again,
34:08on the wrong side of history, good old ESPN stats and info. Rich loves it. Rich, Rich.
34:14Rich, I always just picture like the minions in, uh, in despicable of me, you know, those
34:18guys, I picture that's what ESPN stats and info looks like. And Cimini calls them and
34:23says, give me a good one guys. And they come up with this since 1941, the jets are the first
34:29team that did this, this, this, this, this, this, and this. Yes.
34:32It's 44 and Oh, in that situation, it's crazy. Oh man. That's why it's a, it's a privilege
34:42to witness history, right? Yes. Sure. You know what? You always keep it on the bright
34:46side. Cause I appreciate your man. And we'll catch up with you later this week. As we preview
34:51the jets going to Detroit and Aaron Glenn facing his old team. Thanks guys.
34:56All right.
34:56All right.
