00:01A leatherback turtle has returned to Trengganu's shores to lay 70 eggs,
00:06marking the state's third recorded landing this month after years without a sighting.
00:10The turtle came ashore at Kuala Abang Beach in Donggun at about 2 a.m. Tuesday
00:15and returned to the sea around 5.30 a.m. after laying its eggs.
00:20Trengganu Fisheries Department Director Pang Nyukong said the 2.15 meters long,
00:251.15 meters wide female was spotted by a turtle egg collector.
00:30Department personnel collected the eggs at about 6 a.m.
00:33and transferred them to the Turtle Conservation Center hatchery in Rantau Abang,
00:36where they are expected to hatch within 50 to 70 days.
00:40Pang said the department did not rule out the possibility that it was the same turtle
00:44that landed at Pasir Putai Beach, Marang on September 1st, and Rantau Abang Beach on September 13th.
00:51The three landings this month have renewed hopes for the return of leatherbacks to Trengganu
00:55and highlighted the urgent need to keep their nesting beaches safe.
