00:02A morning briefing to kick off another year of mango picking at Tu's garden, an 85,000
00:07tree mango farm in Darwin's rural area. Tu's Saramat rush cow has been growing mangoes
00:13here for 35 years and says backpackers are vital.
00:17Without a backpacker, the town will not survive. It's not just the mango industry, we have
00:24hospitality, restaurant, when the population double or triple during dry season, where
00:31the staff will come from to support that.
00:33She believes the federal government's cuts to working holiday visa numbers are a response
00:38to concerns about immigration.
00:40Without the immigration, this country would not strive. Myself, I come from Thailand 35
00:46years ago, you know, contribute significantly to this country.
00:52Under the changes, backpackers will need to enter a ballot to stay for more than 12 months.
00:57And the number of second year working holiday visas will be capped at 45,000. Just 5,000
01:03third year visas will be issued. Combined, this means Australia will welcome around 40,000
01:09less backpackers in the coming years than it did this year.
01:12A concern not just for employers, but backpackers as well.
01:16I just arrived to this country, I fell in love with this place and now knowing that probably
01:21I'm not, will be able to stay as much long as I want, it's kind of disappointing.
01:27It definitely has changed my view on things on like, like what would be the best future
01:32for me, because I want to stay in Australia all three years.
01:35The Territory's opposition leader has called out her Federal Labor colleagues, asking for
01:40concessions for the NT.
01:41I think that the Federal Labor Government will show a complete lack of regard for the Northern
01:47Territory on this particular issue if they do not give us a carve out. I'm very happy
01:51to openly say that to my Federal Labor colleagues and to our Federal Labor Government.
01:56While she waits for an answer, backpackers prepare for a lottery to determine their futures.
02:00Now, first off, jednak the Federal Labor, EPA will surely take two vac-levelagens on the
02:00Although as we have problems, we offer small fishes of water française.
02:01They deserve to be wise enough, that the atmosphere is to turn us and allow us to watch
02:02But if you will give us a donation of arrows to make sense.
