00:08Cars remain by far Europe's favorite way to travel, according to Eurostat, making up 69% of all passenger journeys.
00:17But for the first time since 2014, trains have overtaken buses, coaches and trolleybuses.
00:24Rail now accounts for 7.5% of travel across the EU, edging past buses, which fell to 7.3%.
00:32But in 10 years, planes grew the fastest of any transport mode, up to 3.6 percentage points since 2014,
00:41even outpacing the modest rise in rail.
00:44Cars, meanwhile, slipped slightly down 2.9 points over the same period, and buses dropped further still, down 1.3
00:52points.
00:52The national picture varies widely. Car use is highest in Lithuania, at nearly 84% of all travel, followed by
01:01the Netherlands at 77% and Finland at more than 75%.
01:07Those in Croatia fly the most, as it makes up almost half of all travel there, at 45.6%.
01:15Rail plays its biggest role in Hungary at 11.3% and Austria at just more than 10%.
01:23Buses are at their most popular in Malta, Ireland and Hungary.
