00:00Chinese President Xi Jinping is on his way to Washington for a high-stakes meeting with U.S. President Donald

00:08Trade, rare earths and artificial intelligence, Taiwan, are expected to be among the key issues on the table.
00:14So what is each side looking to achieve from this meeting?
00:18Dr. Peter Chang, analyst and former deputy director of the Institute of China Studies at University of Malaya, joined us
00:26to break it down.
00:28I think going into the summit, from the American side, I think Trump really would like to see better access
00:35to the rare earth from China.
00:38The Chinese has restricted its export to America.
00:41And I think Trump would like to see the Chinese buying more of the American goods to address the trading
00:47balance, you know,
00:48especially the American's agricultural products that is important for his own constituents within America.
00:55But I think even as Trump approaches this summit, then he still wants to maintain America's leadership in the tech,
01:04high tech, especially in AI.
01:06So that's from the American side.
01:07From the Chinese side, I think the Chinese really, I mean, they're going to use the rare earth as a
01:12bargaining chip.
01:13If you want our rare earth, then you have to give us access to your microchips, you know, the advanced
01:18chips that we need for our own AI development.
01:21And then the Chinese will probably ask for greater access to the U.S. market, especially for their EV, electrical
01:27vehicles.
01:29But I think the most important thing that the Chinese would like to have when they come with this is
01:35the Taiwan issue.
01:37They really like to see U.S. making some concessions on that.
01:42So overall, both sides have their own sort of bargaining chips to play on the table.
01:49And we will see how this turns out in the next two days.
