00:00Ancient as the world, a huge bottomless hole releases disgusting smells filling the area around.
00:07Strange sounds come from the depths of this mysterious pit.
00:10People are too afraid to walk nearby and discuss this hole out loud.
00:14If you look down there, you'll see nothing but ominous darkness.
00:18All this sounds like a plot from some horror movie.
00:22But this is reality. This creepy hole really exists.
00:26And now we're going there to find out what it is.
00:30You get on a plane and fly to Southwest Asia.
00:33Then you go to the south of the Arabian Peninsula.
00:36You get in the car and drive to the place called the Well of Barhut.
00:39Nobody agrees to go with you because they believe this place is so dangerous.
00:44It's located in the desert of Yemen's Almara province.
00:47To get there, you drive through dunes and lifeless plains.
00:51The closer you get to the hole, the quieter it becomes around.
00:55There's almost no vegetation and you don't see any animals.
00:58Only a few birds fly by.
01:01Your GPS says you're almost there.
01:03You stop the car, get out, and an unpleasant smell immediately sneaks into your nose.
01:09You can't figure out what it is.
01:11Some people think the hole smells like rotten eggs.
01:14You cover your nose with a bandage and head forward.
01:17You still feel the odor even through the fabric.
01:19You take a few steps forward and finally see it.
01:23A giant hole in the middle of the desert.
01:26It's 100 feet wide.
01:27This is almost the size of a basketball court.
01:30But it's not the size that scares you, but the darkness.
01:34It's so black that you can't see anything.
01:37It's like someone spilled a spot of black paint in the middle of golden sand.
01:41The sun's shining brightly, but the hole absorbs all the sun's rays.
01:46People flew over this place in a helicopter.
01:49Photographers used the most powerful lenses for their cameras to see at least something.
01:53But they caught nothing but darkness.
01:55Even a special drone was floating directly over the pit but couldn't notice anything.
02:00And the darkness is so deep that no one has been able to find out the exact depth yet.
02:04According to approximate calculations, the depth of the hole is somewhere between 320 and 820 feet.
02:12This is almost half as tall as the Empire State Building.
02:16You throw a stone into the hole.
02:18Hear it knocking against the walls.
02:20With each knock, the sound becomes quieter.
02:23You can't hear the moment when it touches the bottom.
02:26You decide to spend the night in the car next to the hole.
02:29For several hours, you toss and turn in the seat and can't sleep.
02:33Finally, you manage to do that.
02:35And you're having a real nightmare.
02:38Terrible monsters come out of the hole and surround you.
02:41Fortunately, the first sun rays wake you up.
02:45Locals also believe this place is a prison for some evil creatures.
02:49They scream and emit an unpleasant smell.
02:52You hear strange, scary sounds and can't explain their nature.
02:56The smell is so disgusting that you get an attack of nausea.
02:59So you move away from the hole a few feet to the side.
03:03At the moment, the giant hole in Yemen is one of the most poorly studied and mysterious wonders of nature.
03:10Scientists still don't know where it came from, what's hidden inside, and how old it is.
03:15Many people say the hole is millions of years old.
03:18Perhaps it'd been formed before the time when dinosaurs walked on Earth.
03:22The worst thing is, is that it's almost impossible to explore the hole.
03:26There's very poor ventilation inside and almost no oxygen.
03:30This makes any research dangerous and expensive.
03:34Locals are afraid to talk out loud about the hole because it can bring bad luck and troubles to life.
03:39Also, some legends say the well of Bar-Hoot threatens all life on the planet and can cause the end
03:45of the world.
03:46For centuries, there were legends that evil spirits that live down there sometimes get out.
03:52However, there are also more scientific hypotheses.
03:56Maybe construction works created the hole.
03:59It could be soil drilling or mining.
04:00All this could have caused vibrations inside the Earth's crust and create the deep well.
04:05Experts say that erosion of limestone or moving geological salts or brines could have created this pit.
04:11There's also a scientific theory similar to the legend about the end of the world.
04:15It says the big hole is the mouth of a dormant supervolcano.
04:19At any moment, it can wake up and spew a million tons of lava and volcanic ash.
04:24Maybe.
04:25Further research will be able to solve the mystery of the hole.
04:28Now we're going to another mysterious hole.
04:31This time, it's located not on the ground, but in the water.
04:34After the hot sands of Yemen, you plunge into the cool waters of the coast of Belize.
04:39Here, you're going to visit the Great Blue Hole.
04:42You're sailing on a boat.
04:43The water around is blue.
04:45But as soon as you get into the hole's territory, the water becomes darker.
04:49The huge black pit lies right in the middle of the Blue Sea.
04:52It's 1,000 feet wide and 400 feet deep.
04:56The Statue of Liberty could easily fit inside.
04:59The most interesting thing is that the hole has a perfectly round shape.
05:03It's like someone created it, artificially, and used it as a huge storage.
05:08For a long time, it was believed the hole was created with outer space technologies
05:12or by representatives of an ancient disappeared civilization.
05:16Unlike the pit in the middle of the desert, you can go down into this one.
05:20And some people did it.
05:22The theory about the artificial origin of this hole was rejected in 1971.
05:27That year, the famous researcher Jacques Cousteau went down there and proved the Great Blue Hole
05:32was created by nature.
05:34It happened hundreds of thousands or maybe millions of years ago.
05:38Thanks to the structure of the stalactite's formations discovered inside,
05:42he found out about a strong earthquake that occurred on the planet about 200 million years ago.
05:47There was a shift in the tectonic platform.
05:49After that, the ground collapsed more and formed a funnel.
05:53It happened at the end of the Ice Age when the ice began to melt.
05:57But this isn't just a deep pit.
05:59There are many underground caves inside.
06:01It's like a long maze where you can easily get lost.
06:05To dive into this underwater cave, you'll need a large supply of oxygen
06:09and a team of professional divers who know these mazes well.
06:13So, you put on a scuba suit and two oxygen tanks and go down into the water.
06:19In the beginning, you meet a lot of marine life,
06:21several species of turtles, sharks, octopi, and more than 60 species of corals.
06:28And the deeper you go down, the emptier the hole becomes.
06:33On the smooth walls, you notice entrances to intricate mazes.
06:37Flooded caves are interesting with stalactites and stalagmites.
06:41But you don't risk going far into the caves.
06:43Just like inside the Egyptian pyramids, some people couldn't find their way back here.
06:48So, you decide to go down to the very bottom of the hole.
06:52But you can't do this without a very special vessel.
06:55So, you need to pay a lot of money and rent a submarine.
06:58Or, you can sit at home and watch the dive into the hole online.
07:01At the end of 2018, a team of scientists went on an expedition to the bottom of the blue hole
07:06and made a live broadcast.
07:09They managed to take new photos inside and created the first 3D map of this place.
07:15Closer to the bottom, they discovered new types of stalactites in the form of icicles.
07:20These stalactites had been here even before the big blue hole filled with water.
07:24Also, a thick layer of hydrogen sulfide was found deep inside.
07:28This substance completely absorbs sunlight.
07:31That's why you find yourself in absolute darkness.
07:34And in this darkness, in the lower part of the pit,
07:38scientists found remains of mollusks, turtles, and snails.
07:42Sometimes marine creatures got here, but can't get out because of a lack of oxygen.
07:47But the most unexpected thing that scientists found there belongs to people.
07:52Somehow, a plastic bottle got to the deepest part of the hole.
08:00In the high altitudes of northern China, there is one mountain that remains frozen all year round.
08:05It's a naturally occurring spot of cold earth.
08:08A thick layer of permafrost lies underneath the mountain's top layer of soil,
08:13freezing everything above it.
08:14The climate-defying pocket of frozen land covers over 26 feet of a mountain slope
08:20in Pingchuan County, a place famous for its scorching hot summers,
08:24reaching highs of 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
08:27This frozen spot of land manages to survive the blazing temperatures
08:31due to the coarse, blocky layer of soil covering the permafrost.
08:35This coarse soil prevents the hot climate from reaching and melting the permafrost,
08:39allowing the ground to stay frozen all year round.
08:42Argentina may be famous for its beautiful beaches and hot sun,
08:46but in southern Argentina, you can find Perito Moreno Glacier.
08:51This stunning blue glacier covers over 100 square miles and is constantly growing.
08:56When visiting this natural wonder, you might notice an archway of ice
09:00forming off the side of the glacier, reaching out to the nearby land.
09:03Suddenly, the archway ruptures and the ice collapses into the water below.
09:08This is completely natural.
09:10The glacier goes through a process of forming these arches until they collapse.
09:14It'll form another one in no time.
09:17On California's Glass Beach, there is no sand and only colorful gemstone-like pebbles called sea glass.
09:24Surprisingly, these beautiful pebbles are the result of garbage.
09:27For decades, the beach was used as a massive dumping ground for locals to abandon their glass,
09:32appliances, and even cars on the beachfront.
09:34The state eventually prohibited anyone from disposing of their garbage on the beach.
09:39Over the years, the waves broke down all the remaining junk and turned it into brightly colored pebbles that attract
09:44tourists from all over.
09:46The highest waterfall in the world, Angel Falls, can be found in southern Venezuela.
09:51The water there travels along one of the biggest tabletop mountains in Venezuela and plummets 2,500 feet down into
09:58the jungle below.
09:59That's three times taller than the Eiffel Tower.
10:02The water falls from so high that most of it evaporates into mist before even reaching the ground.
10:08Visitors can feel the mist settling on their skin from over half a mile away.
10:12In Scotland, hidden away from the main roads and tucked deep within the woodlands, is Fiddick Glen.
10:18This area looks like something out of an ancient fairy tale, with looming glass-moss-covered rock formations and crimson
10:25-red waters.
10:26The water's red color is due to the red sandstone lying beneath the shallow river.
10:31To get to this stunning natural beauty, you have to embark on a dangerous hike down steep, muddy hills, clambering
10:37onto trees to stop you from falling.
10:39But when you reach the bottom, it'll all have been worth it to watch the sunlight shine off the ruby
10:44waters and see the towering rocks of this enchanting world.
10:48With bubblegum pink water and a surrounding circle of emerald green forests, it's hard to believe that Lake Hillier is
10:55a real place.
10:56Located in Western Australia, no one can truly explain why the lake has pink color.
11:01However, scientists have theorized that the high quantities of salt in the lake have attracted a salt-loving pink bacteria,
11:08called halobacteria, responsible for the lake's trademark shade.
11:12In a small peninsula in South America, there is one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the world, the
11:18marble caves.
11:19These look like any other caves from the outside.
11:22Inside these caves, the walls consist of smooth, swirling blue marble formations.
11:26Over thousands of years, water has eroded the marble deposits within these caves, forming this unique cave system.
11:34So while deep blue color seems like it's part of the marble, it's the reflection of the water that causes
11:40these blue shades along the cave walls.
11:44Azerbaijan's mud volcanoes are exactly what they sound like.
11:47Over 300 of these natural phenomena are located in Azerbaijan, more than anywhere else in the world.
11:53There have been over 200 eruptions since records began.
11:57Mud volcanoes are landforms caused by the eruption of mud, water, and gases.
12:02Pockets of gas form underground and force their way to the surface, eventually erupting and splattering mud everywhere.
12:10These volcanoes can be pretty dangerous.
12:12In 2006, a mud volcano erupted in Indonesia and coated an entire nearby village in thick mud.
12:20Pemukkale is a marvelous hillside of tiered thermal pools.
12:24The name of the Turkish city translates to Cotton Castle.
12:27The pools are made of travertine, a type of limestone that gives the hillside its stunning white color.
12:33In addition, the stone has geothermal properties making the pools hot springs.
12:38There are 17 pools in total, and all are open to the public 7 days a week.
12:43The temperatures range from 95 degrees Fahrenheit all the way to 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
12:48They are essentially nature's version of a hot tub.
12:52Legend has it that the giant's causeway in Northern Ireland was formed when a great Irish giant was challenged to
12:58battle a Scottish giant.
12:59The causeway was built across the sea so the two giants could meet.
13:03When the Irish giant defeated his foe, the Scottish giant ran home and destroyed the causeway behind him.
13:09All that remains are the beginnings of the causeway at the water's edge.
13:12The stunning rock formation of interlocking columns was the result of an ancient volcanic eruption.
13:18The columns are a hexagonal shape and form a natural staircase from the Irish Sea to a foot of a
13:23cliff.
13:23The tallest columns are 39 feet high.
13:26The giant's causeway is the most popular tourist destination in Northern Ireland, receiving almost 1 million visitors in 2019.
13:34Deep within the Nica Mines in Mexico, you can find the Cave of Crystals.
13:39The cave is full of massive shards of bright selenite crystals.
13:43The largest is 37 feet tall.
13:45These are some of the largest natural crystals in the world.
13:48It's thought that the water that previously filled the cave was incredibly rich in minerals,
13:53allowing the crystals to grow to their full potential.
13:56Unfortunately, tourists cannot visit the Cave of Crystals due to its scorching temperature and humid conditions.
14:02Even scientists are required to have a special permit to enter the cave.
14:07The River of Five Colors is located in the Colombian province of Meta.
14:11Known locally as the Rainbow River, the waters are famous for their striking colors.
14:16The river is variously colored yellow, green, blue, black, and most prominently red from summer till winter.
14:23Due to a lack of nutrients, the river's water is naturally clear,
14:26so it's easy to see diverse and colorful plant life on the riverbed.
14:30But it's these vibrant plants that give the waters its many colors.
14:34In New Zealand, you can take a boat ride through the beautiful Waitomo Caves.
14:39The walls of the caves glow luminescent, like bright stars against the night sky.
14:44But these glowing lights aren't stars.
14:46They're worms.
14:47Luminescent glowworms live in the walls of the cave, giving the cave its trademark glow.
14:52The particular species of glowworms cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
14:57For thousands of years, the fairy chimneys have stood tall in Cappadocia, Turkey.
15:02These unusual rock formations are tall, thin spires of rock that were initially formed by lava.
15:08The tallest chimney is 130 feet high.
15:11Humans have hollowed out the insides of these rocks for hundreds of years to create homes for themselves.
15:17Today, you can visit one of the many hotels that currently exist inside the fairy chimneys.
15:23Wave Rock is a popular spot for a photo shoot in Western Australia.
15:27The giant rock is 46 feet tall and shaped like a breaking ocean wave.
15:32Millions of years of strong winds and hard rainfall eroded the rock into the wave-like shape it has today.
15:38The rock has a stunning mix of red and gray colors caused by minerals washed down the rock.
15:43The site of the Wave Rock has become a famous camping ground due to its proximity to beautiful lakes and
15:48a variety of wildlife.
15:51The Zanyi National Geopark in China has previously been voted one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.
15:57The park is famous for its colorful rock formations, popularly known as the Rainbow Mountains.
16:03Layers of minerals and different colored sandstone were slowly pushed together across 24 million years to create the stunning landscape.
16:14Oh, that's really weird, Susie says, looking at a tree with a yellow bandage tied to it.
16:21She's been walking around a strange forest in southern Japan for an hour, and it seems she's got lost.
16:28She hung the bandage on the tree 30 minutes ago and started to walk right away from it.
16:33She didn't turn anywhere.
16:34She was walking straight, and then, half an hour later, she returned to this tree.
16:40Susie couldn't have gone far from the nearest settlement.
16:43She feels the forest is trying to deceive her.
16:46The trees are moving to not let her out of this place.
16:49All this looks like a horror movie.
16:52As night comes, a mysterious, invisible monster should appear and hang creepy crafts made of sticks on branches.
16:59Anyone would have panicked and started screaming for help, but not Susie.
17:04She smiles in the face of any danger.
17:07Besides, her phone and internet are on, so everything is fine.
17:12She takes a few steps to the side and ties a blue bandage to another cedar.
17:17Then she starts walking along a narrow path, moving further and further away from the marked tree.
17:22She notices something.
17:24The path has a slightly curved shape.
17:26Susie starts running forward and returns to the marked tree 10 minutes later.
17:31All this time, she's been just walking in a circle.
17:34Susie walks away to another tree and notices another curved path here.
17:39She takes her phone, opens online maps, and looks at her location through satellite photos.
17:44It's incredible.
17:45The trees in this place grow, forming concentric circles.
17:49There are several layers here.
17:50It resembles mysterious circular patterns that somebody left on fields all over the world.
17:56Shocked, Susie records herself on her phone to inform subscribers she has found a strange natural anomaly.
18:03While filming, she hears someone laughing.
18:05It's a smiling guy standing next to her.
18:08He finds it funny how she's speaking seriously about this forest.
18:12He tells her there's nothing unusual about this place.
18:15Trees grow in circles, thanks to people.
18:17In 1973, they planted cedars in such a way with purpose and created 10 concentric green circles.
18:25They did this as an experiment to find out how trees would grow in such rounded conditions.
18:30They called it experimental forestry.
18:33The trees started to grow in a convex shape, symmetrically fanning out.
18:38This proved that the size of gaps between the trees affects their growth.
18:42Initially, they had to cut down the trees, according to the plan.
18:46But the place has become popular among tourists and locals.
18:49They love to take beautiful photos using drones and walk along the rounded paths of this little maze.
18:55Susie gets upset a little.
18:57She informs subscribers there's nothing mysterious here.
18:59The guy who told her about the circles offers her to visit the mysterious crooked forest in Poland.
19:05That's where she will definitely see a strange phenomenon.
19:08But before going there, she decides to check out another exciting place in Japan.
19:13She arrives in the fishing village of Aoshima.
19:16The first locals Susie meets here are cats.
19:19There are more of them than people.
19:22Cats are everywhere.
19:23They live here thanks to a lot of fish.
19:25Once upon a time, this place was full of mice that spoiled fishing boats.
19:30People brought cats to this place to fight the rodents.
19:33When all the mice had disappeared, the cats stayed here.
19:36Since then, people have been considering them as full-fledged citizens.
19:41The video with cats gets the most likes on Susie's channel.
19:44But now, as she promised, it's time to go to Poland.
19:48The forest looks weird thanks to the curved trees.
19:51The lower parts of their trunks are bent, making them look like bellies.
19:55It's also strange that they all point only to the north.
19:59Susie goes around the whole forest and counts about 400 trees.
20:03It seems people change the shapes of the trees.
20:06But for now, there's no evidence of this.
20:08It's believed they planted trees in the 1930s and damaged them during growing at an early age.
20:14Nobody can say why.
20:16There was a small village near the forest.
20:18Its locals probably knew the secret.
20:21But unfortunately, the town was destroyed more than 70 years ago.
20:24The key to the mystery disappeared along with it.
20:28Of course, scientists had hypotheses, but they were all quickly refuted.
20:33Perhaps this curved shape was caused by a genetic anomaly.
20:36There are trees with similar trunks in other forests of the planet.
20:40But here, the curves look too perfect and neat.
20:43It's like an artist worked on them.
20:45This suggests that something from the environment has affected them.
20:49You can find similar trees all over the world.
20:51But mostly, they're loners and never grow in such big groups.
20:56Perhaps snow falls on the tops every winter.
20:59Tree trunks bend under such a heavy weight.
21:01But why is only the lower part changing?
21:03And why do other trees in the forest look normal?
21:07Also, there's no explanation why these trees point north.
21:10Is there any purpose?
21:12The most plausible theory says that local farmers changed tree shapes to create furniture and details for ship manufacturing.
21:19It's fast and easy to make a basket from such a tree, for example.
21:22By the way, manipulating the growth of trees was a common practice among some ancient tribes in America.
21:28They deformed the trunks for navigation and communication in forests.
21:32Well, that's all very interesting.
21:34But now Susie wants to see something scary.
21:37One of the subscribers advises her to visit one creepy forest.
21:41This place is located on an island 17 miles south of the center of Mexico City.
21:47Susie gets here on a small boat.
21:49As soon as she steps on the ground, she turns on the live broadcast on her phone.
21:53She records dolls hanging on trees all over the island.
21:57They have different clothes, different sizes, and faces.
22:00There are about a dozen creepy toys on every tree.
22:04Rain and hot sun deformed the toys' faces.
22:07They're covered with moss and greenery and have taken eerily scary forms.
22:12There are rumors they come to life at night.
22:14Want to check?
22:15One of the subscribers writes.
22:17No problem.
22:18Susie agrees.
22:19The sun is going down below the horizon.
22:22Darkness falls on the forest.
22:24Susie is wandering among the trees.
22:26The moon lights her way.
22:27She makes a fire to get warm.
22:30At this moment, she hears a strange sound.
22:33She notices some movements out of the corner of her eye.
22:36The phone turns off.
22:37Susie looks up and sees one of the dolls, lit up by the flames, is turning its head in her
22:43direction.
22:44Susie screams and runs away from this place.
22:47Of course, the doll didn't move.
22:49You can notice a little bird sitting behind the toy's head.
22:52A few days later, Susie found out that one of the Mexico City locals had moved to the island in
22:58the 50s and filled it with toys.
23:00He collected dolls from landfills and canals around the island.
23:04He spent several years decorating every tree.
23:07In the beginning, it looked strange and exciting for tourists.
23:10Then, as the dolls began to age and rot, the place became more attractive for people.
23:16There are several legends about the reasons for his obsession.
23:19Okay, Susie's had enough of these mysteries and creepy places.
23:23Now she wants to admire something majestic that was created by nature.
23:27She arrives in California's Sequoia National Park, where the most giant trees in the world grow.
23:33She's looking with an open mouth at the biggest tree in the world, a giant sequoia.
23:38Its name is General Sherman, and it's about 2,000 years old.
23:42The volume of this tree is almost half the size of an Olympic swimming pool.
23:47Despite its age, it's not the oldest one.
23:50There are redwoods in the park that appeared 3,000 years ago.
23:54And the tallest tree in the world grows here, in California.
23:58It's a redwood that belongs to the Sequoia family.
24:01It's called Hyperion, and its height reaches 380 feet.
24:05This is one-third of the Eiffel Tower's height.
24:08Just imagine what kind of view you can see from the tree's top.
24:11Now Susie is on the island of Madagascar.
24:14She's going to see unique baobab trees.
24:17They look like something has ripped them out of the ground, turned upside down, and shoved them back in.
24:22Baobabs are some of the most beautiful trees in the world.
24:25Most of them are here, in the alley of baobabs.
24:28But you can also find them in Australia and South Africa.
24:31Their tree trunks resemble sponges.
24:33They expand and absorb moisture during the rainy season.
24:37Elephants like to drink it.
24:38They tear off and chew the trunk's parts to quench their thirst.
24:42At night, flowers bloom on the baobabs.
24:45They smell like sour milk and attract bats.
24:48But the most interesting thing is that the baobab doesn't dry out and doesn't fall like other trees after the
24:54end of its life.
24:55It crumbles, settles, and leaves a pile of pieces on the ground.
