00:09We're going to get a chance to take an in-depth look at the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.

00:17So a gentleman named Alex reached out a while back.
00:20He's a huge fan of the channel and at the moment he is piloting this thing back up.
00:30To the north for a bunch of other runs that they're going to make with it.
00:33And he offered to swing by the house and allow us to check it out.
00:38Hopefully I can persuade him to give us a ride along because I swear this is like a childhood dream

02:35Oh, so as hot doggers, we travel the country for a year spreading miles and miles with smiles.
02:39We operate the wienermobile on a coast-to-coast weenie roast.
02:43We love puns.
02:44We've got buns and buns and puns.
02:46We execute events across the country.
02:48So it's a mix of parades, fairs, festivals, trade shows, grocery store events.
02:54Just depends on the week, but we're all over every day.

03:04Okay, so we can start with the exterior.
03:07So it's a 27-foot-long fiberglass hot dog on wheels, essentially.
03:11So it's built like a boat.
03:13This body is 25 years old.
03:15It's 1995.
03:16Really?
03:17Every seven or eight years, it gets a full frame-off restoration.
03:20Wow.
03:20So it's a 2017 chassis with a 95 body on top.
03:24Is it like an RV chassis or something?
03:26No, it's a GM box truck.
03:27So it's a GM W-4 box truck chassis.
03:30Oh, okay.
03:30Everything on the vehicle that's not custom is GM-derived.
03:33So the gentleman who designed it was evidently a GM guy.

03:37So these headlights are off a 95 Grand Am.

03:44Lots of bits and pieces from other things.
03:48But yeah, it's powered by a six-liter Vortech V8.

04:07But hard to keep the winter real clean, I will say that.
04:09It's hard to find car washes that can accommodate us.

04:13Yeah, you can see they're upside down in reverse.
04:15So that's where the trunk lid was closed there.

04:20We all have vanity plates.
04:22So each vehicle has its own sort of title.
04:24It's the only way to tell them apart from one another.

04:26So we are Relish Me.
04:28We've got Big Bun, Our Dog, Oscar Mayer, Oh I Wish, Wiener.
04:33I think that's all of them.
04:34Yeah.
04:34We even have a little Mini Cooper version that's Little Link.
04:37So that's our cocktail weenie.
04:39Yeah.

04:40I haven't seen that.

04:41It doesn't come out very often, but you know, cocktail weenie were all the rage.
04:46You know, Italian job era.

04:48We decided to make our own version of one.

04:52If a lot of people want to see you, not every day you get to see the inside.

04:59So in here you'll find our ketchup and mustard upholstery.
05:03We've got condoms of leather carpet.
05:05If you pan up, we have a blue sky ceiling.
05:08Because it's always blue skies in the Wienermobile.
05:13We always tell people they've got to clean their shoes later because they've been walking
05:16around in mustard.
05:17So the mustard stripe down the middle.

05:24So access to the engine is through the floor.

05:34So it hauls buns, but it's no Lamber wingy.

05:47So we've got a GPS, Bluetooth, aftermarket head unit there.

05:54So one that came with the vehicle and then an aftermarket Thermo King unit in the back.
05:58CB radio, so we can talk to truckers about hot dogs.
06:03You know, let's really look at all the fixings.
06:04Bun boxes on the dash.
06:06You know, that's sort of the deal.
06:08It does have some Wiener Reveal specific things as well.
06:11So in theory, it has a jingle horn that plays the Oscar Mayer jingle.
06:16It's not actually working right now.
06:17We've got to get that one figured out.

06:19Just a few other fun things, too.
06:21So, yeah.
06:22Got you a little sunroof.

06:25So that pops out completely, and we can ride on the roof in parades and things.

06:49So, because there's a direct correlation between number of keys and how incredible the vehicle
06:55is.
06:55We have three keys.
06:56One for the trunk, one for the door, and one for the ignition.

07:01The Wienermobile.

07:17It is kind of weird.
07:18The shifter is on the left, which is kind of strange.
07:20It's backwards.
07:21You know, you're like, you know, doing it with your finger and thumb.

07:25It's like a dream come true.

07:27Automatically heated side view mirrors.
07:30No rear view, of course.
07:31So we've got those convex mirrors on the side.
07:33Those are off of an RV.
07:36What in the world is it like driving this down the road?
07:39And people, like, what?
07:40Oh my gosh.
07:41Like, what in the, I can't even imagine.
07:43It's the expressions you get.
07:44That's like what's exciting about it.
07:46You see all these smiles, the excitement, horn honking.
07:50I mean, we see everything from sunroof selfies to parents just about holding their kids out
07:54the window to see it.
07:55Because this doesn't normally come down to the southeast, does it?
07:59Or not until recently?
08:00Well, so we have six vehicles.
08:02That's an important thing to know.
08:03You know, one Wienermobile, but six vehicles.
08:05We talk about it as the Wienermobile, but there really are six.
08:08One in every corner of the country.
08:10We are the east coast vehicle.
08:11Okay.
08:12But we have a southeast vehicle that handles Florida, Georgia.
08:16Kind of crosses over into the Carolinas as well.
08:18I gotcha.
08:19Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee.
08:20All very fluid territories.
08:22But we do zigzag all over.
08:24Gotcha.
08:24We try to make it to every corner of the country as often as possible.
08:28We've been to every state, Alaska and Hawaii included.

08:31Put it on a boat both times because it's no sub-Mawini.
08:34Uh, I'm so sorry.

08:44I mean, it's, it's, uh, we've even gone international, you know, and, and decades past we've been

08:51We've done a tour of bases in Germany and, uh, Spain, I know.
08:55I've done Canada, Mexico, uh, I've been to Puerto Rico.

09:00It's a well-traveled hot dog.
09:02I mean, the, uh.
09:02So how long have you been doing this?
09:04Uh, just since June.
09:05Oh, very cool.
09:06As a, as a hot dogger, it's a one-year program.
09:08Uh-huh.
09:09We go June to June.
09:10Every year they hire 12 hot doggers to operate all six vehicles, uh, in teams of two.
09:16And, uh, once that year's, uh, you gotta find something else to do.
09:19You know, it's really, it's a one-year program.
09:21They won't let you do it longer.
09:22That is really cool.
09:24Yeah.
09:24Man.
09:24You'll do somewhere in the neighborhood of three to four hundred events.
09:28Uh, you'll visit something like, uh, you know, 40 to 50 different cities.
09:32You might be in 30-ish states, and you'll cover about 40,000 miles in a Wienermobile.
09:38So it's a, it's a great opportunity.
09:40You're, you're essentially, uh, paid to travel the country and, and spread miles and miles
09:45of smiles, so.
09:46Because the, the Wienermobile has been around.
09:49So when did the first one get built?
09:51Like the 30s or something?
09:52Yeah, it was the 30s.
09:531936.
09:54So in the, right in the middle of the Great Depression.
09:56Yeah.
09:56Oscar Mayer's nephew, Carl, saw an opportunity to create something positive and uplifting.
10:01And, uh, developed the Wienermobile in Chicago.
10:04So it went in parades.
10:05Uh, in fact, you know, everyone asked, well, what happened to it?
10:08Uh, it was scrapped for spare metal in World War II.
10:10Oh, damn.
10:11So we didn't have it anymore.
10:12No one had an idea of what, uh, long-lasting, uh, icon it would become.
10:17So, uh, came back in the early 50s.
10:19Uh, still sort of a regional vehicle.
10:22And in the ensuing decades, it grew in sort of its, uh, notoriety and, and how far it traveled
10:27to.
10:28Um, there were some ad campaigns that really helped that as well.
10:31Yeah.
10:31And it became a part of Americana.
10:33Wow.
10:33Um, took a break in the 70s.
10:35Came back in 1988 with the Hot Dogger program.
10:39And, uh, for the past 32 years, that's how we've done it.
10:42Man.
10:42Yeah.
10:44What a cool, a cool, cool deal.
10:46It's awesome.
10:47It's so awesome.
10:48So we do keep the, uh, the key to the hood there on the Ultimate Keychain, the Relish Me
10:52Hot Dog.
10:52So I'll open it up for you here.

10:59It's something no one's ever seen under the hood of the Wienermobile.
11:02Uh, shockingly, there's very little there.
11:04Just a couple of speakers.
11:06We've got the, uh, the battery, one of the batteries there.
11:08So if we needed to jumpstart someone else's car or jumpstart the Wienermobile, we could.
11:13And then the windshield fluid, uh, windshield washer fluid reservoir there.
11:17And then that is the radiator all the way back there.
11:19Yep.
11:20See it.
11:21Definitely, uh, you know.
11:23So the speakers are just for, like, the, the jingle and just general, general music stuff.
11:28That's it.
11:29Man.

11:32Like I said, I don't think I've ever opened the, uh, the hood for anybody.
11:35So this is a very unique, uh, well, thank you for making this vision extra special.
11:39I know.
11:39I'm trying to think of, you know, things that are sort of, uh, unique to show you guys.
11:43But that's, uh, that's one of them.
11:47So one thing I'm super curious about, do you need any kind of special driver's license to pilot this machine?
11:54Just a regular driver's license.
11:56Although we are DOT, uh, certified and health certified.
11:59And we have to log all of our drives.

12:31You know, for any, any viewers who want to replicate the experience of riding in the Wienermobile,
12:35uh, I recommend going down to U-Haul or, uh, budget truck rental and, uh, you'll get a pretty good
12:42idea right there.
12:43They can help you out.
12:44That's, I mean, that's really what it drives like.
12:46It's a big truck with a fiberglass hot dog on top.
12:50It just gets a lot more attention, which you're about to see, I'm sure.
12:52You just got to imagine what in the world are these people thinking right there.
12:57Yeah, that's the best part, really.
13:00Oh, my gosh.
13:00The attention you get, the waves you see, I mean, it's just, that's, that's the best part.
13:07And there's all kinds, there's a whole range of reactions.
13:09There's folks who try to play cool and, like, pull out their cell phone and try and take a video
13:13of it.
13:14Like, just all incognito.
13:15Like, like, maybe if I don't see, if they don't see me and I don't see them or vice versa.
13:20Yeah, they're trying to be too cool for it.
13:21Uh, I mean, you get, uh, you get folks that are just over the moon excited.
13:25We've had people leave their vehicles in traffic, like, they'll put it in park and get out.

13:30You know, it's tough.
13:31What's happened last week in Raleigh?
13:32That's crazy.
13:34You know, it depends.
13:35I'm not sure if I can get all of us in the frame or not.
13:38I'm going to try.
13:39But I'm curious, why did both of you want to be a hot dogger in the first place?
13:44The truth is, who wouldn't want to be a hot dogger?
13:47I mean, this is true.
13:48You're being paid to travel the country in an iconic piece of Americana.
13:52It doesn't get any better than that.
13:54I love, I love working with people.
13:56I love the travel components.
13:59And it's just something that's so special to say I drove the winger.
14:03Yes, for sure.
14:04Getting to meet new people every single day is something that I've always loved.
14:07And this is, like, the perfect opportunity for it.
14:11I studied public relations, so they came and spoke to my class when I was a sophomore.
14:15And from then on, I knew this is exactly what I wanted to do.
14:18Very cool.
14:19Yeah, it's an excellent tie-in for us, both of us studying marketing and PR.
14:24Yeah.
14:26It's a great first step for our career.
14:28I've met a lot of people in PR from all the car reviews and stuff,
14:32and I don't think there could be any PR job more exciting than this.
14:38What I find most interesting about the Wienermobile is that it's not just a marketing tool.
14:44Like, this thing, like, its literal job is to drive around the country and just make people happy.
14:49That's what we're all about.
14:50You know, our mantra and our motto is to spread miles and miles and smiles.
14:54That's really what we believe in.
14:56And to this day, that's our core number one goal,
14:59to create something surprising and uplifting when you least suspect it.
15:04You know, for folks shopping at the grocery store running into us,
15:06hopefully we just made the trip to the grocery store a little more special,
15:09passing us down the street.
15:10I'm sure it brings smiles to faces because I see it every day.
15:13Well, it's like when we were just in downtown.
15:15Like, we were there for, like, two seconds on a Sunday,
15:17and this town is not very big.
15:20And already people started to gather, and I was like, oh, my gosh.
15:24That's how it goes.
15:24Oh, boy, the crowds are coming.
15:26Like, people are just stopping in the street and everything.
15:28I was like, this is crazy.
15:30Oh, people follow you.
15:31We pull into the hotel at night, and we have a caravan of cars behind us.

15:35All going to see the Wienermobile.
15:36Oh, absolutely.
15:38More often than not, it's a couple of cars.
15:40All wanted to just check it out.
15:41They followed us from the highway, hoping they were going to stop soon.
15:44It's crazy.
15:45That is just too cool.
15:50It's a popular vehicle.
15:52People get just, it still blows my mind how excited people get to see it,
15:57how special it is.
15:59Sometimes it starts to wear off on me.
16:01I see it every day.
16:02Yeah, yeah.
16:03But then you meet someone or interact with someone who,
16:05whose day you really are.
16:06Like me.
16:07Like you, truly.
16:08Or yesterday.
16:09Yesterday, at a Harris Teeter in Charlotte,
16:11we had a family that drove all the way from Greenwood, South Carolina.
16:15Wow.
16:15So something like, I think it was almost two hours they drove just to see it.
16:18And the look on her face, the excitement was just unbelievable.
16:22Gave her a ride afterwards, and I'm convinced we made her a week at least, you know.
16:26And that's what makes it special.
16:28Oh, man.
16:30So we, uh, we saved these for auto enthusiasts like yourself.

16:36Actual, you know, metal die cast sort of deal there.
16:39Dude, that's sick.
