00:00And D'Amico Ryan, honestly, on a Monday, seemingly showed a pretty significant lack of confidence in this offense.
00:08Is that how you would qualify?
00:10Yes, in several different ways.
00:11And that's why I want to talk about this.
00:13And I know you do as well, don't you?
00:15Anyway.
00:16I don't know.
00:16We'll talk about it regardless.
00:17We'll figure it out.
00:17When does that ever matter, whether or not we talk about something?
00:21No, I agree.
00:22And I think, well, let's listen to a couple of these.
00:26But go ahead and finish what your point was.
00:28Yeah, man, because what gets it back, right?
00:30If we are to assume that that's the case.
00:32And let me know if you think that's the case on the text line.
00:347-1-3-5-7-2-4-6-10.
00:36It feels like there was a lack of confidence in the offense.
00:38If no other reason than you get to a fourth and one, you go, I'm going to take the three
00:42from 58 yards as opposed to trusting the offense that I built to hopefully be big, bad maulers to get
00:47inches.
00:48What was it?
00:49What was the elect?
00:49Because that was an electronic measurement, wasn't it?
00:51That was like, what, two inches?
00:52It was something like that.
00:53Yeah.
00:53Right in that area.
00:54It wasn't much.
00:55Something like that.
00:56I mean, less than a yard.
00:58And they were like, it's a game of inches.
00:59It is indeed.
01:00It is indeed.
01:01And it is even more so when you don't even try and pick those up, if we're going to be
01:04honest.
01:04Let me put it this way.
01:06D'Amico Ryans has already showed us.
01:07Would you agree or disagree?
01:10He's already showed us.
01:11Doesn't have a lot of confidence in this offense.
01:13At least to this point or in that game.
01:16At least that it's waned, right?
01:17Right.
01:18I think that confidence can be one of those things that ebbs and flows.
01:21And this might be, this is one of those, ebbs is the downside, right?
01:24This is ebbs.
01:24Ebbs are troughs.
01:26Flows are peace.
01:27Yeah, I think you're right.
01:28All right.
01:28Yeah.
01:28All right.
01:29Okay.
01:29So what then?
01:31What gets him back to being confident?
01:33Yeah.
01:34That's a good question.
01:35What could, like, if he's already to the point, again, at least in this game, and, you know,
01:40it's one of those that really, you know, he talked about alternately kind of put it on
01:44coaches and then he's kind of put it on players.
01:47Like, is there going to be, because there's big goals and we keep, you know, kind of glossing
01:52over that as we talk about this game.
01:54Well, because the big goals are on hold.
01:56They're on ice right now.
01:57Do you know how ridiculous we sound talking about lofty goals after what they put on?
02:02But that's why I think this is relevant to talk about.
02:05They had two weeks ago, three, you know, two and a half weeks ago, big, big goals.
02:10Super Bowl.
02:10Is they didn't make anybody shudder.
02:13You know, didn't make anybody, you know, quake in their boots.
02:16They're like, yeah, I could see that.
02:18All right.
02:18So if those are the goals and the offense, you're already losing, if not lost confidence
02:23in what, what is the solution?
02:26How, how do you get that confidence back?
02:28Well, let's see if we can get a little bit from D'Amico Ryans from when he was at the
02:31podium yesterday.
02:32This was him, cut five fig, talking about, you know, what, what they need from this team.
02:38Oh, for sure.
02:40There are a lot of great things to build on from, you know, such a disappointing loss,
02:44but there are always a ton of things to improve on just from us, coaching perspective and players,
02:50like just staying connected when we line up on Sundays, right?
02:55Are we doing what we've coached, right?
02:58Are we calling what we've coached all week?
03:00Are we actually executing it?
03:02How we said we were going to do it?
03:05So it just ties hand in hand for us as coaches and players to make sure we're as connected
03:10on game day and we're doing all the things that we've trained all week.
03:14So there are a few plays out there that we had opportunities to capitalize on and make
03:19some plays from offensive perspective, also special teams and defense, all three phases
03:24had opportunities to capitalize and make big plays and, and we missed the mark a little
03:29bit.
03:29Are we doing what we're coached?
03:31Are we connected?
03:32Are we executing?
03:34There, there are other things.
03:35And if you don't mind, I'd like to go ahead and hear the other two cuts that I put on
03:39there
03:39because I think they all tie together.
03:41Like what is, what is, from D'Amico's perspective, you know, what are some of the things that we
03:47can do?
03:47Well, I want to get to those, but something that.
03:49He said, they're actually jumped out.
03:51You know how sometimes you don't even remember something in there and it jumps out within
03:54a different context when he said executing, it wasn't just executing.
03:58Basically it's executing how we said we were going to write, right.
04:02And you know what?
04:02I don't know if this is specifically what he's talking about, but from my perspective,
04:05because that's all I can talk from that, that is one of the frustrations I have with
04:09Nick Haley within this game plan.
04:11Cause even the run plays, cause we, you know, I've been harping on run plays a little bit
04:15today.
04:16In watching back some of those run plays in the first half yesterday, there were plays
04:20that actually could have been successful if one thing goes one way or the other, but an
04:26undeniable thing is none of those run plays were relatively sexy.
04:29And I know that it doesn't have to be, it doesn't have to be, you know, Mike McDonald or Mike
04:34McDaniel last year where you've got, you've got people flying around and it looks, it looks
04:38all special.
04:39Running the football is decidedly less sexy than throwing the football inherently, but
04:43there wasn't, it wasn't particularly special run plays.
04:46And I know you're going, okay, Reggie.
04:47So what's your point?
04:48We came into the season with Nick Haley talking about, I'm going to utilize, you know, we're
04:52going to utilize these and we're going to move guys around and all these different kind
04:55of lofty goals that would at least point in direct towards, we're going to do some things
05:00that are interesting and that are innovative.
05:01That, that is, that was the lip service that was given.
05:04And they activated five tight ends and they act.
05:06And we ultimately ended up with a, something that did not look like what we were kind of
05:10the bill of goods that we were given.
05:12And that's not exactly what D'Amico Ryan says, but it has a little bit of an air of that
05:15there.
05:15So to your answer, I do think that there's a good part of this, which is, Hey man, when
05:20we, when we go in, I imagine that the game plan when they're talking about it in those
05:24coaches rooms is not to abandon the run is not to, is not to just go in 11 personnel
05:28and not be able to do different things and put defenses on edge.
05:31I wonder how much of that is, Hey, translating what we've said in game plan to what we actually
05:35do on the field is I imagine that that's part of getting the confidence back from the start.
05:40Yeah, no, I think you're right.
05:41So let's go.
05:42What is this one?
05:43Eight?
05:43Yeah, this is, this is a cut eight and D'Amico Ryan's responding to the question of whether they
05:50need to better utilize tight ends.
05:51Well, we, we can definitely, you know, utilize more, uh, utilize our tight ends a little bit
05:56more, uh, try to mix it in, you know, sometimes you get into the flow of the game, I think,
06:00and you end up being down, we end up probably going a little more 11 personnel than was expected.
06:05Sometimes just the flow of the game, you can plan the game one way accordingly, but sometimes
06:09you get in situations and it dictates something different when it comes to a personnel standpoint.
06:13So it's not from a matter of lack of preparation and preparing for the multiple tight end groups
06:18is just how the flow of the game went.
06:20So the last part of that is just frankly not true.
06:23I mean, they were in 11 personnel throughout the game, uh, you know, whether it was tied
06:27or, or, or, or whatever the score was first three snaps from we're 11, I believe so.
06:32Cause I remember, I remember sitting up there in the press box and I've, I've tried to note
06:35what the personnel is, especially since that's been a such a big, and I can see it on my notes,
06:3911 personnel, 11 personnel.
06:40I was like, damn, what the hell's happening?
06:41Yeah.
06:41But the first part of that, I think is something that if you're talking about, okay, how can
06:45they regain that confidence?
06:46He's telling us we can utilize more tight ends flat out.
06:49We can utilize more tight ends, whether it's blocking or in the passing game or whatever
06:55it might be.
06:56Can I ask you a question?
06:56What is that?
06:57And you know that this is going to be a loaded question.
06:58Can I ask you that?
07:00Is it possible that they are, that they are not sold on their 13 personnel?
07:04Oh, I think it's absolutely possible.
07:06Cause remember week one, and I kind of just try to throw this in here as a, huh, that's
07:10kind of interesting.
07:11It felt like Nick Cayley at a point kind of lost, uh, lost interest with the toy.
07:16Almost like, you know, and you've seen this a number of times with all your kids and grandchildren
07:19now where you'll get a toy early on and they just kind of forget it in that in week one
07:23versus the bills.
07:24You can maybe say that this game game was dictated to them, but they used a lot of 12 and
07:2713
07:28early and it kind of faded away to just a lot of 11 personnel and also jumbo packages.
07:33Keep that in mind this week.
07:34Again, you don't end up with, uh, you don't end up with those big, those big tight ends
07:39in there in situations where, you know, you want to run the football and you want blocks,
07:42but they're running 11 personnel and condensed sets where you have sometimes your wide receivers
07:46now blocking on the edge.
07:47Is it possible that they got these wires, these, these tight ends in here, all five of them,
07:52uh, and we can name them off if you want to.
07:54And they were like, not really hitting in the blocking the way that we want it.
07:58To be hidden in the block.
07:59You say they, that, that would be a real, another real demerit on what they did building
08:03this roster.
08:04If that's the way that it feels.
08:05No, but you say they, and I think that's, that's crucial because D'Amico is not part
08:09of the, they, he flat out said, we can utilize more tight ends.
08:12I think he's wondering if Nick Caley and company, you know, weren't, weren't going with what he
08:18thought would work.
08:19And then the other one, you know, we've talked about, uh, you know, Jalen Noel since training
08:24camp and, you know, maybe he can do this.
08:25Maybe he can be that, well, it was really just had two significant plays, uh, in, uh,
08:30in Sunday's game, but this is what D'Amico Ryan's had to say about that.
08:34Yeah.
08:34We all have a lot to work on coaches player.
08:37We all have a lot to work on.
08:38It's not good enough.
08:39And I think it's, it's easy to sit back and kind of nitpick, Hey, what didn't go wrong?
08:44Jay Noel got one big explosive, you know, on the, on the past, did another good job on
08:48the, on the jet sweep.
08:50I just, Jay knows that a great job.
08:52He improved in the punt return area, did a really good job of being decisive as a punt
08:57returner.
08:57So I thought Jay Noel took a huge step this past week and he got better for our football
09:02team.
09:02I mean, he put us in position to have some opportunities to go score.
09:06So, and as we continue to build off of what he's shown, we'll continue to see how that
09:11role continues to thrive.
09:12Yeah.
09:12We all have a lot to work on.
09:14I think, I think when D'Amico Ryan's goes into the offensive meeting room or meets with
09:18his offensive coaches, we're going to see three things, or, you know, we're going to see
09:22three things as a result of that.
09:24I think D'Amico Ryan's, and we talked about this earlier, is going to say, don't abandon
09:28the run, run the damn ball.
09:30We talked about that earlier.
09:31I think he's going to tell them, why the hell are we not using our tight ends more?
09:35And I think he's going to tell them, I want to see more Jalen Noel.
09:37So, so when the question comes up, what can they do to regain confidence?
09:41I think D'Amico's kind of telling us those three things.
09:44And I don't think that those things would be wrong either.
09:47Right.
09:48And they don't have to look exactly the way that you imagine.
09:51Right.
09:51Cause even the question that I asked about tight ends, if they have maybe possibly lost a
09:55level of belief and they're being able to execute, I think that there's the reason
09:59why you put tight ends on the field could still be utilized, right?
10:02Put tight ends on the field in order to maybe get bigger formations.
10:05And then you can maybe split those tight ends out, which it felt like they were doing in
10:08that first game a little bit early where you'd see 13 personnel, but only one or two are attached
10:12to the line.
10:13And now you've got dudes standing up and maybe you've got a linebacker who's pulled out
10:16into space.
10:17And the whole idea of getting a big boy in the space is to then go drown him, right?
10:22Is to then go beat him.
10:23And you've got guys that proved in this game alone, in the Cincinnati Bengals game, you
10:26see Dalton Schultz make a great play up the scene.
10:29You see a Fossum roll, make a great catch up the scene.
10:31And really more importantly, CJ Stroud throw great footballs up the scene.
10:36These are things that you can get to and that you can attack that I think that you need to
10:39do with a little bit more frequency.
10:40But to your point, I think those are the three things he's going to go in there and say,
10:43let's do this and by let's do this is what he's saying.
10:48Right.
10:48And then Noel is an interesting one because this brings me back to the indexing that I
10:52did.
10:52I told you a little earlier that me being a dork was like, all right, so let me look
10:55at and kind of take inventory of what it is the pass catchers that they have do well and
11:00don't do well.
11:01And it felt like there was a lot of times that you're getting guys doing things that
11:04maybe they don't do as well versus the things that they do really well, especially when you're
11:09playing against man that's notable with guys that aren't inherently man beaters.
11:12Maybe it's use Jalen Noel more and then use them in the ways that we know that he's good
11:16at, right?
11:16Let him run away from guys and maybe even use them in some of the ways that it felt like
11:20you started using him in training camp.
11:21If you were in training camp, whether you went to one of the open practices or you're
11:24one of the people that are lucky enough to cover this team, we saw a lot of things that
11:28make you go, oh, this is interesting.
11:30This is why there was positivity towards what this offense could do.
11:33We haven't seen that translate.
11:34And so I'm wondering if D'Amico Ryans, who has seen so much of that, is like, hey, man, let's
11:39see some of that translate with Jalen Noel, with Kaysha, I mean, Kayshawn Booty wasn't
11:42even there for that, with Kayshawn Booty doing some of those things.
11:45And so, yeah, no, I feel you on that.
11:47Can I add one more thing on top of this that I honestly, I wanted to mention in the conversation
11:50we had about not this team, not being allowed really in my, in my feeling to abandon the
11:57run.
11:57You need the threat of the run too.
11:59And that's not just running the football.
12:01It's also play action.
12:02Of course.
12:02They just did not use play action at all, which means especially trying to get to the middle
12:06of the field, linebackers bite.
12:08And when they used it, those linebackers, even in this game, still bit and you were able
12:12to get shots over the middle.
12:13It's muscle memory.
12:14It's automatic.
12:15Linebacker's going to have to, you know, hint a little bit at the run.
12:17Even if you're just stuffing them.
12:20Right.
12:20Like there's been people, there's been smarter people than I that have done research projects
12:25into this that have determined that you don't even need to be running the football
12:27well to utilize play action to good effect.
12:30And one of the, one of the, the places where this team actually had catch and run, which
12:35is something that they needed to do.
12:36They did a little early and it just kind of disappeared for them was when one of those
12:41plays was a slant.
12:42I believe it was Xavier Hutchison on a slant.
12:44And part of that was play action.
12:46The linebackers bite down and here's Hutchison over that middle and where those hook defenders
12:49usually are with space to catch it because CJ put them on, put it on them.
12:53He can run as well.
12:54And what, what is maybe like a five yard catch becomes more because I think it's 13 on that
12:59play because he can catch and run.
13:00And it's, and part of that is the play action that you have that forces the linebackers to
13:04move.
13:04And they used it.
13:05I think the 20, like, and they were like the 31st most of any or 30th rather of any
13:11teams in play action week two.
13:13It can't be that in addition to not running the football where you're just snapping the
13:16football and dropping back.
13:18Yeah.
13:18They're going to eat your lunch and they clearly did.
13:19So when you talk about getting more confidence, using that again as well.
13:23And then the other thing is we, we started out by saying, you know, they're big goals.
13:26So, okay, let's say they do play action more.
13:28They run the ball more.
13:28They use the tight ends more in the, in the 12 and 13 personnel and more.
13:32And they, you know, they, they try Jalen, uh, no more.
13:36If those things don't work, then you have to have an answer.
13:41Other questions.
13:42Well, and that becomes a coaching.
13:43Well, then the questions are answered.
13:45Well, they're right.
13:46They're answered.
13:47So then, then another question pops up is a better way to put it.
13:49And that means, well, if it's not this and it's not the receivers and, and, and Nico Collins
13:55is not a cure all, although he'll help when he comes back, well, then you got to kind
14:00of look at the coaches and there's not a lot you can do with that.
14:02Not, not kind of, you will, you will look at coaches.
14:05Yeah.
14:05We'll be talking about shortlist at that point, which is funny.
14:08Shortlist or who steps in.
14:09Yeah.
14:09Well, then that's a whole nother conversation because who are the guys that you have that
14:13feel capable of that?
14:14I mean, Szaplinski is sitting right there and, and, you know, he's another one of those,
14:18you know, John Carroll and Patriots guys.
14:21I think Bill Lazor probably has the most experience.
14:24Yeah.
14:24He has been an offensive coordinator.
14:25Nothing in his history excites me, but maybe you're just looking for competence at that
14:29point, which I don't, I'm not certain where big Bill Lazor, but you don't have the guys
14:33that profile as a, okay, that's a step in play call.
14:35This, this is kind of an all or nothing in my mind.
14:38It's going to get dicey real quick.
14:39It very, it very much can.
14:41If you do not implement things that I think that are there for you to do.
14:44So hopefully they get back to it and instill that confidence in D'Amico and more importantly
14:48in us so that we can be, we can enjoy watching this football team and that they can go win
14:52football games.
