00:39Hey everybody, I'm Christian Bryant. Thanks for starting your day with us. We begin with breaking news overnight.
00:45A federal judge has ordered the White House to immediately restore access to CNN, MSNOW and Politico just days after
00:53President Trump banned all three
00:54from the White House. And this ruling came down just before one o'clock this morning.
00:59U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, says the White House did not give the journalists due process
01:06required before taking away their press credentials.
01:09The order means reporters from all three outlets can return to the White House at least for now.
01:14Kelly's temporary order lasts 14 days while the larger case continues.
01:19And Kelly also took direct aim at one of the White House's main arguments for the ban.
01:24The administration says the outlets published reporting that raised national security concerns.
01:29But Kelly says the record doesn't back that up.
01:32Quote, nothing in the record that predates this suit suggests that the revocation of plaintiffs' hard passes was motivated by
01:40national security concerns.
01:42Kelly pointed out that when Trump first announced the ban, he didn't cite national security.
01:47He complained about what he called the outlet's untruthful and negative reporting.
01:52The ban had also disrupted the White House TV pool.
01:55After CNN was blocked from its scheduled pool duties, ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC joined CNN in suspending coverage.
02:05The three outlets argued Trump punished them for coverage he didn't like.
02:08In their filing, the Justice Department said the president has the authority to restrict access and pointed to national security
02:15concerns.
02:16Kelly sided with the outlets for now, saying they're likely to succeed on their due process claim.
02:23Chinese President Xi Jinping is in Washington, and today he and President Trump get down to business.
02:28Trump and the First Lady gave Xi and his wife, Peng Li Yuen, a rare plain-side welcome at Joint
02:35Base Andrews Wednesday, complete with the red carpet and a military flyover.
02:39The two presidents sit down for talks today, but before that even happens, the U.S. and China have already
02:45bought themselves more time on trade.
02:47In an interview on Fox News, Treasury Secretary Scott Besson says the two sides agreed to extend their current trade
02:54truce by two months from November 10th through January 10th.
02:59We have agreed today that we will extend what we call the Busan agreement, the economic detente between the two
03:11countries that was scheduled to end on November 10th.
03:14That is going to be extended until January 10th to give us more time to see what we can do
03:20on the economic front.
03:21That gives both sides another two months to see if they can get to a bigger trade deal.
03:26Xi, for his part, arrived saying China and the U.S. should be partners, not rivals.
03:32And there's plenty else on the table today.
03:34The two leaders are expected to talk AI, fentanyl, and trade, with China's control of rare-earth minerals also a
03:42major issue between the two countries.
03:45Iran's president used the U.N. stage Wednesday to push back directly on President Trump just one day after Trump
03:51threatened to, quote, annihilate his country.
03:54President Massoud Pazeshkin said Iran has, quote, only defended ourselves since the U.S. and Israel attacked in February.
04:01And his message to Trump was pretty direct. Quote, yes, they did hit us, but we did not bend the
04:08knee.
04:08Pazeshkin said Iran is still open to negotiations with the U.S., but rejected U.S. demands to restrict its
04:15nuclear program.
04:16At one point, he held up photos of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and more than 150 schoolchildren killed
04:23during the opening days of the war.
04:25And during the speech, a U.S. delegate walked out.
04:28It's not clear why.
04:30The White House responded afterwards, saying, quote,
04:32The Iranian regime has murdered thousands of its own people, killed Americans overseas, executed acts of terrorism in the Strait
04:40of Hormuz, and launched indiscriminate attacks against its neighbors in the region.
04:45And it defended Trump's approach, saying he is, quote,
04:58We've been talking a lot about AI lately and how fast this technology is moving.
05:03Well, two of the people leading that race just went to the U.N. with a warning.
05:07We need to start figuring out some rules here.
05:10OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amadei both spoke to the U.N. Security Council Wednesday.
05:17They run rival AI companies, but on this, they're pretty much saying the same thing.
05:22The technology is moving fast enough that countries need to start working together on how to keep it safe.
05:28We've been talking about artificial intelligence for years, but it feels different in recent weeks and months.
05:34Rapid model progress has made the timeline feel more compressed, the upside more tangible, but also the stakes and the
05:40risks more immediate.
05:41We have a choice in front of us.
05:44AI can either be more like a new renaissance of creativity and discovery or more like a new industrial revolution
05:50of upheaval and disarray.
05:52Altman wants countries to come up with common ways to test these models, what they can do, where the risks
05:58are, and whether the safeguards actually work.
06:00Amadei went further, saying poorly managed AI could become a risk to humanity.
06:06We should establish common global standards for testing AI models for loss of control risks and misuse risks, and a
06:14notification system for AI incidents that are significant to global security.
06:20Now, nothing was actually agreed to here.
06:23That wasn't really the point of this meeting.
06:24And President Trump has already made clear he doesn't want global rules slowing down AI development.
06:30He told the UN this week the US is going to, quote, encourage it, not rein it in.
06:35This morning, we're learning eight US service members attempted suicide during the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group's extraordinarily long deployment.
06:45Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao confirmed the number in a letter to Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand this week.
06:51The eight attempts have happened across the Lincoln strike group since it left San Diego last November, two during active
06:58fighting with Iran.
06:59No suicides have occurred on board.
07:02The Lincoln has now been deployed for more than nine months, far longer than originally planned, with much of that
07:08time spent supporting the war with Iran.
07:11And for months, families have been raising concerns about conditions on board, including food and supply problems, faulty plumbing, and
07:19the mental health of the crew.
07:20The Pentagon has pushed back on reports of a mental health crisis, saying it has not seen an increase in
07:26suicide attempts and that counselors, chaplains, and other support are available.
07:31The Navy also sent additional counselors and social workers to the ship last month.
07:36The Lincoln has now been replaced in the Middle East by the USS George Washington and is heading back toward
07:42San Diego after stops in Thailand and Guam.
07:46Finally this morning, a blood test designed to screen for dozens of different cancers at once just got a big
07:51boost from an FDA advisory panel.
07:54It's called Galeri, and with a single blood draw, it looks for DNA signals linked to more than 50 types
08:00of cancer.
08:01The test is intended for people 50 and older, and in a large study of more than 140,000 people,
08:08it detected about a third of the cancers that were eventually diagnosed.
08:11But there are limitations.
08:14The test was much better at finding later stage cancers than early ones, and FDA reviewers also worry a negative
08:21result could give some people false reassurance and lead them to skip routine screenings.
08:27Galeri is already available in the U.S., but it's not yet FDA approved, and patients generally have to pay
08:33for it themselves.
08:34Full approval could make insurance coverage more likely.
08:37The FDA doesn't have to follow the panel's recommendation and hasn't said when it will make a final decision.
