In Criterion’s first volume of the anthology By Brakhage, we brought twenty-six astonishing works by the avant-garde film pioneer Stan Brakhage to home video for the first time. Now, in this second installment, we are proud to present thirty more of Brakhage’s visionary creations, from 1950s films to his final work, from 2003, curated by his wife, Marilyn Brakhage. Highlights of this collection include the war meditation 23rd Psalm Branch; hand-painted films from Persian Series; The Wonder Ring, made for a commission by Joseph Cornell; the autobiographical Scenes from Under Childhood, Section One; and the found-footage film Murder Psalm.

00:00Imagine an eye unruled by man-made laws of perspective, an eye unprejudiced by compositional logic, an eye which does
00:11not respond to the name of everything, but which must know each object encountered in life through an adventure of
00:20perception.
00:20My myth was that I was a mountain man with a mountain family, a mountain man artist, which is what
00:29the world so much needed as what I guess is a counterbalance to Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground, some such.
00:38I stumbled, therefore, into or was given the gift of the scratching of titles directly onto the film surface, which
00:47had this effect that from the beginning the viewer was given the rhythm of the very projector that was going
00:56to show them the rest of the film.
00:57They were given the sense of the film surface itself, they were given handwriting, even when the titles were printed,
01:08they were given some sense of that that we call a signature or the very soul of the maker in
01:17writ.
01:18That that that cannot be counterfeited is there on, scratched, etched on the film surface.
01:27And that became something that I continued to do, and that was intrinsic to me, that the work be hands
01:33-on, that it show the human being that it had passed through in every conceivable way, that it remove itself
01:41as much as possible from all that trickery, that it was perhaps a window or a God-given envisionment or
01:50something of that sort.
