01:24It's absolutely no problem.
01:25We won't make the same mistake, so apologies up front here.
01:29So, David, the Chargers, I mean, one of the, unfortunately for them,
01:34more interesting stories in the league here.
01:36What a surprising, if not shocking, start.
01:40I mean, maybe this is a list of things,
01:42but what for you are one or two of the biggest reasons why they've started 0-2?
01:47Yeah, I think, honestly, it all starts on offense with just how disjointed
01:52the offense has been.
01:54They've unfortunately not been able to sustain drives,
01:57and they've shot themselves in the foot with stupid procedural penalties,
02:00and this is an offense that very much requires precise timing
02:04and, you know, anticipating throwing the ball
02:08where your receivers aren't exactly there yet.
02:10And to me, it's quite obvious that the Chargers and, you know,
02:14the Chargers offense just isn't quite in sync with what Mike McDaniel
02:19is trying to get done on the offensive side of the ball.
02:21And on defense, I would say it's definitely just giving up too many big plays
02:25in the passing game.
02:26They've been pretty good against the run, but they have to figure that out.
02:31And they have new coordinators on both sides of the ball,
02:34but the offensive side is absolutely more concerning.
02:37You know, two games in here, there's a lot of hand-wringing
02:43about whether Justin Herbert is a fit for this Mike McDaniel offense.
02:48And, you know, given how two games have gone,
02:50certainly that's not confusing why that's being written and said
02:53by people who watch these games and analyze these games.
02:56Was there concern about that in July and August,
03:00or was everyone just, you know, thrilled that this is all going to go great,
03:03wait until you see what Mike McDaniel will do with a quarterback
03:06who actually can throw the ball?
03:08Like, what was their concern before the season
03:11that this might be a shotgun wedding type thing?
03:15Well, I think everybody had the Rose Couser glasses on saying,
03:18hey, you're pairing a coordinator with Mike McDaniel
03:20who authored one of the top offenses in the NFL in 2023
03:23with Tua Tagovailoa, and now you're partnering him
03:27with a quarterback that has, you know, some of the most, you know,
03:31physical gifts at the position in the league.
03:33As a quarterback that you guys get to watch over there and Josh Allen,
03:38you know, Justin Herbert has similar arm talent
03:40and where he can access any point of the football field.
03:43So I think everyone was very excited about that marriage,
03:46but I don't know if everyone was trying to put in their mind
03:51that it might take a little bit longer for things to click than,
03:54you know, right out the gate.
03:56And I don't think anybody anticipated the Chargers going 0-2.
03:59I most certainly did not, but maybe we did not provide enough grace
04:04for this offense to actually take time for them to sink
04:08because it hasn't happened yet.
04:11David, so now you have a turning point in the schedule
04:14and it looks ridiculously hard coming up here after these two losses.
04:19What, in your opinion, and maybe just from talking to fans
04:22and feeling out the Charger fan base,
04:25do you think, like, the level of panic is at this point?
04:27Or is it still too early for that?
04:30No, no, the panic level is at a 15.
04:32I don't think anybody expected the Chargers to lose to the Cardinals,
04:36and they especially did not expect them to lose to the Raiders
04:39to the exact same scores.
04:42And then, of course, it makes it even worse
04:43that the Cardinals get absolutely throttled in Week 2,
04:46so it makes that loss look even worse than it did originally.
04:51So, yeah, the panic level especially, I mean,
04:54the Charger fans are not stupid.
04:56They know that this stretch here going from Week 3 to Week 10
05:00is going to decide how this season ends for the Chargers.
05:03If they go out, and I think there is some concern that they could go 0-3, 0-4, 0
05:09-6.
05:10Like, that's been thrown around.
05:12Just obviously everybody's panicking, and I do not believe that's going to happen.
05:16I think that they will find that rhythm.
05:18And when they do, we all know Mike McDaniel knows how to coordinate offense.
05:24He is a very, very good run game coordinator,
05:27and he's an innovative pass game coordinator.
05:30And also, Justin Herbert is far too talented for them not to figure it out.
05:35I truly believe that will happen, but there is an intense amount of worry,
05:40and there is a lot of panic going on,
05:44especially just how this season has started for the Chargers.
05:47On behalf of the 60,000-some-odd Bills fans
05:50that will be populating the new Highmark Stadium on Sunday
05:53and the thousands more watching,
05:57do you think that will happen this week for them?
05:59Do you think they'll find their game?
06:01Like, how do you feel?
06:02Because I'm a little worried about a team
06:04that I thought to be talented coming into the year
06:08and having these two bad losses sort of being backed into a corner.
06:12Like, how optimistic are you for Sunday?
06:15Maybe we should start that part of the conversation with how healthy they are,
06:18because it seems like there's some problems there.
06:21I mean, what else is new?
06:23The Chargers never are able to keep themselves healthy,
06:26and I just didn't expect to see a CVS receipt for the injury report
06:32for the Chargers going into midway through week three.
06:35That definitely was not on my bucket list before the season started.
06:39But it's football, and the thing is, nobody cares.
06:43Nobody cares about your injuries because everyone's dealing with it.
06:47You know, I heard before we started recording
06:49that the Bills are dealing with their own type of injuries
06:52with players missing, and you're going to have to figure it out.
06:55So nobody cares.
06:57As far as my optimism for this game,
07:00it centers around the Bills' past defense.
07:03They're not good.
07:05They've given up a lot of yards and a lot of points.
07:09The thing is, the Bills' offense looks unstoppable.
07:12And so that's the big concern when you're looking at this football team
07:17and this game in particular.
07:18The Chargers definitely are desperate,
07:20and they are very much backed into a corner.
07:22And I expect to see them roll out some wrinkles
07:26and some things that they haven't put on tape
07:28because they need to start pulling out all the stops.
07:30And to me personally, I think they need to establish the run.
07:33They need to try to play keep away from the Bills
07:35and try to maintain possession, and you've got to score points.
07:38You've got to finish with touchdowns.
07:40You cannot beat this Bills team that can put up points in a hurry
07:43by trading field goals for touchdowns.
07:46With David Droegemeyer here on the Western Hotline,

07:55Your panic meter, because we're just meeting,
07:57goes up to 10 when you say it's at 15?
07:59Is that what – that's your panic?

08:02We're not going up to 100.
08:02That's not mine.
08:03Yeah, that's not mine.
08:05I understand, like, obviously looking at the micro perspective,
08:08it seems like it's a 10.
08:10But looking at the macro, there's 15 games left.
08:13And there is absolutely no conclusions that are 100% done
08:17until they're done, right?
08:19So they've got to go out there and strap it up.
08:21They've got to go play 60 minutes.
08:22And I expect that, you know, they're going to right this ship.
08:25I don't know how soon it's going to be,
08:27but my panic level personally is probably around a 6 or 7.
08:32I don't like the way things have looked so far,
08:35but I've seen some redeeming qualities on defense,
08:37and I see some flashes of brilliance on offense.
08:41But I need those flashes to turn into a full-length movie.
08:45You know, David, of course, Mike McDaniel, I say of course.
08:50Like, we're talking about him a lot here,
08:52and he – I play a lot of fantasy football.
08:55He was a big story going out there and like,
08:57okay, here, finally for Justin Herbert,
09:00and what a great opportunity for McDaniel and all the rest of it.
09:03He's not the head coach.
09:05And it almost feels like for the – maybe the first time
09:07that Jim Harbaugh is kind of like in the background a little bit,
09:10at least in one context when we're talking about
09:12the offensive coordinator all the time.
09:14How is Harbaugh for you?
09:16How is it, you know, covering him?
09:18And I don't know, is he mellowing at all?
09:20People are asking if, like, the fit between the two men is, you know, manageable,
09:26which, you know, nobody was really maybe questioning that so much
09:29before the 0-2 start.
09:31Yeah, I mean, obviously whenever you're losing,
09:35everyone's going to question everything.
09:36But the thing you need to understand or, I guess, remember
09:40is that the Chargers have been 11-6 in back-to-back seasons,
09:44made the playoffs in a back-to-back season.
09:45So as much as everything feels like the sky is falling,
09:49like there has to be some context that you keep
09:51when you're considering what you're looking at, Jim Harbaugh.
09:54As far as covering him, it's been ever interesting, right?
09:58His press conferences, he's always going to say something wild and crazy.
10:01He's always been a storyteller.
10:03But he also has an innate ability to answer questions
10:07without really saying much at all.
10:09So you have to try to read in between the lines with him.
10:12And as far as the relationship with him and Mike McDaniel,
10:14they believe very fundamentally in some of the same core concepts
10:17of owning the line of scrimmage and playing fast
10:21and dictating what you're going to do to the opponent.
10:24Now, we haven't seen that yet,
10:25but they do align from a football perspective.
10:29Obviously, they're very different people,
10:31but when it comes to playing the game,
10:33they do see it in the same way.
10:35Interesting, good.
10:36How much of what's going on with this start
10:39are fans throwing on Herbert himself?
10:42Because this is a guy that, since he really arrived in the league,
10:46and you mentioned it already,
10:48he's got the arm to access any part of the field from just about anywhere.
10:53Similar enough arm talent to Josh Allen.
10:55Big guy.
10:56Reasonably athletic.
10:57He doesn't run like Allen, but when he does want to run,
11:00I remember last year sort of being like,
11:02oh, look, Justin Herbert can run.
11:05But yet, it's like one thing after another,
11:09and at some point, I think a fan base gets tired of making excuses for a guy.
11:15It's this coach.
11:17It's that coach.
11:17It's this injury.
11:18It's that injury.
11:19Your tackles are hurt or whatever,
11:21and you look to a guy that is the face of the franchise
11:25to sort of elevate the whole production.
11:27Whether that's fair or not, I think it happens.
11:30How, I don't know, for lack of a better way to put it,
11:33how hot on his tail is the posse right now?
11:37I mean, I think people also understand when they're watching Justin
11:41that you don't win or lose by yourself.
11:45Quarterbacks are so unfairly criticized,
11:47and there's so much responsibility for the wins that they get
11:52and also for the losses that they get,
11:54even though they don't play the game by themselves.
11:56The Chargers had the worst offensive line in the history of football last year.
11:59I mean, I'm talking about, like, absolutely insane guys
12:03that should have never been playing football on Sundays,
12:06and they were out there blocking for Justin Herbert.
12:08He faced the highest pressure rate in the league.
12:10He missed both of his tackles,
12:13started running back for multiple months in the season,
12:17and still dragged his team to the playoffs.
12:20It's just, for me, obviously with quarterbacks,
12:23you've got to win in the playoffs,
12:24or you're just really not worth as much.
12:26But, like, you have to keep some context.
12:29This is his fifth different offensive coordinator in seven years.
12:33It's his fifth different offense that he's had to learn.
12:36Like, you guys have to cut him a little bit of slack.
12:39And I understand it's wins and losses,
12:41and that's all that matters at the end of the day.
12:43But in a team sport where you don't win or lose,
12:47you have to keep that perspective
12:48when you're considering talking about Justin Herbert.
12:52That all seems very fair.
12:54Although there are times in Buffalo where I have to ask myself
12:57if it really isn't one guy.
13:00Like, these first couple games kind of...
13:03That dude's pretty fun to watch, right?
13:05Yeah.
13:05He really is.
13:07The way their defense is played, too, really.
13:09Like, we shudder to think what the Bills would be without Allen,
13:13but we don't have to know yet.
13:15David Droegemeyer with us on the Western Hotline.
13:17What's your assessment of what Herbert has to work with
13:20in terms of weapons?
13:22Everybody seemed to like McConkie.
13:24He's got an injury he's playing through.
13:26Johnston, more of an enigma.
13:27Hampton, a, you know, young draft pick.
13:30What do you think that adds up to?
13:34Yeah, I mean, they need more from Quentin Johnston.
13:36Like, he hasn't been good to start the season,
13:38and he's had two back-to-back eight touchdown seasons.
13:41And we were very excited to see what Mike McDaniel
13:44was going to be able to bring out of him
13:45because the reason why he got drafted in the first round
13:47was because of his ability to work with the ball in his hands
13:50after the catch.
13:51And we haven't seen nearly enough of that.
13:53And also, I'd like a Rondé Gasson the second year tied in.
13:57I think he's a great, great football player.
13:59He was behind David Njoku and Charlie Kolar to start the year.
14:02Both of them are now down with injuries,
14:03so he's going to go back to getting his opportunity.
14:06As far as the weapons are concerned,
14:07I don't think they have any kind of amazing superstars
14:10outside of Amarion Hampton.
14:11I really do like watching Amarion Hampton run the football.
14:15He is a very physical runner.
14:17He also has good speed.
14:19He's able to just drag guys forward.
14:22He is going to be a big part of this offense going forward,
14:24and I would expect to see him get utilized a little bit more
14:27in the passing game as well.
14:28He is a big catalyst type of player.
14:31Him and Ladd McConkie,
14:33the Chargers offense is going to go as those two guys go.
14:36And, of course, as Justin Herbert goes,
14:38and as much as the offensive line is going to be able to protect him.
14:42They have two of the best tackles in the game,
14:43but their interior, once again, is in shambles.
14:47And it just seems like a broken record
14:48because I've been saying the same thing
14:49for the last four years on the interior.
14:52You talk about Gadsden,
14:54and you imply, if not just flat out, say,
14:57like maybe a little bit of a blessing in disguise,
14:58the other injuries in front of him.
15:01What was interesting to me about the Chargers in the preseason
15:04at that position was that Gadsden was playing in the preseason,
15:07and other guys were not.
15:08And I liked him as a rookie.
15:10He's a Syracuse guy.
15:11I wondered if that meant he was buried.
15:14But it doesn't really look like it.
15:16Even before the injuries,
15:17he has a role in that passing game,
15:21and maybe now it'll be enhanced.
15:23Yeah, absolutely.
15:24It should be.
15:25He is a very talented pass catcher.
15:27He showed in his rookie season,
15:29especially there was a stretch there,
15:31a three-game stretch where he was one of the better tight ends in the game.
15:35He does have the ability to attack the seam.
15:37He can make some physical catches.
15:39He's a good big target,
15:40and he's much faster than your typical tight end.
15:43He is your traditional pass-catching tight end.
15:45It's just in this system,
15:47Mike Medano really wants his tight ends
15:49to be able to block in the running game.
15:51And unfortunately, that's still an opportunity
15:52for Arande to grow his game.
15:54But now, you know,
15:55beggars don't get to be choosers,
15:57and the Chargers tight end room
15:58was once a big strength of the team,
16:00is now not so much.
16:02And Arande Gadsden is going to go be put,
16:04thrust back into the limelight,
16:06and be that number one pass-catching tight end
16:09for the Chargers going forward.
16:10How healthy is McConkie known to be?
16:13Like, he's not in question for this game.
16:15He played through injury last week, right?
16:17That's correct, yeah.
16:18He actually was a full-going practice yesterday.
16:21That lets me know that he's getting healthier
16:22and he's getting better,
16:23and he definitely was on a snap count
16:25against the Raiders.
16:26He didn't play a full game.
16:27They were very cautious and careful with him,
16:30and he was doing a good job of, you know,
16:32pulling the Deshaun Jackson
16:34and making sure to protect himself
16:36and not take the big violent hits.
16:39And that's important because, you know,
16:41he is definitely the best receiver
16:43on this football team,
16:44and the Chargers desperately need him
16:46to be out there on Sunday.
