00:00On Thursday, the third day of the 81st United Nations General Debate concluded in New York.
00:07The day was marked by delegations walking out of the hall in rejection of Israeli Prime
00:12Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and demonstrators in favour of the Palestinian cause in the
00:17vicinity of the United Nations headquarters.
00:19Our Special Envoy Jorge Gestoso takes a deeper look at the event.
00:28It has been a very, very interesting third day in the General Debate here at the UN headquarters
00:35in New York.
00:36Why?
00:37Because it was a very important, very tough, very strong message that has been delivered
00:43by the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, via videoconference.
00:50It has been denied by the U.S. authorities his visa, granting a visa for him to come and
00:58in person address the Assembly.
01:01But anyway, he started denouncing all those problems that he encountered.
01:06Anyway, through his videoconference, he denounced what is the situation regarding the conflict
01:13with Israel.
01:14And he put special emphasis that the bottom line, the final decision, the final purpose
01:21of the conflict, according to Abbas, is to wipe out Palestine, the Palestinian people,
01:30as it has been done in 1948 in the Nakba, where 800,000 Palestinians were moved away from
01:39their territory.
01:40And according to him, that is what they expect to do.
01:44So the Palestinian people disappear of that part of the territories.
01:49And Israel expand his initiative of creating the big Israel.
01:58In the aftermath of that speech, immediately in the roads, in the streets around here, the United
02:09Nations, demonstrations in favor of the Palestinian cause, in favor of Mahmoud Abbas' words, and
02:19denouncing of what Israel is doing.
02:23In the afternoon was the return of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
02:28As soon as he got into the Assembly, lots and lots of people left, clearly denouncing, expressing
02:39the repudiation of this person.
02:42I'm talking about the different delegations of other countries who are talking long lines
02:48leaving the stage.
02:50And in that case, in that moment, starts the insult, mostly the words against anyone who
02:58questioned the version of Netanyahu of this conflict.
03:04That is exactly the opposite of what we heard in the morning.
03:08Therefore, he discredited the public that abandoned the South.
03:13He discredited the news channel Al Jazeera from Qatar.
03:19He discredited the universities of the U.S.
03:22He discredited—it was not enough with that—and he discredited the president of
03:28Turkey—we're talking about Mr. Erdogan.
03:30He discredited even the mayor of the city here of New York, Solan Magnami, and so on and
03:38so forth.
03:39Most of his speech said there's only one purpose.
03:44He said, we have to win.
03:46There's no choice.
03:47We don't have any other choice than to win, and we are going to win.
03:51So, definitely, we're showing that at the end of this third day, it is still irreconcilable
04:03versions of what the two sides of this conflict that has been taking tens of thousands of
04:10land of Palestinians is being done.
04:12And the question is if the international community is going to give them the help that mostly Palestinians
04:20are desperately underneath, even—you remember that when this session of the U.N.
04:28Assembly started, the general secretary of the U.N.
04:32we're talking about Mr. Guterres—said that even the workers of the U.N.
04:40are being attacked in Gaza, in the Gaza Strip, a division called the UNRWA.
04:47Not only the facilities of the United Nations, but also the people of the United Nations.
04:54So, there's still a long way to go, and what, at the end of the day, definitely was very clear,
05:01is that this conflict is still very, very sharp, very rough, and it's a long way ahead.
