01:04Uyghur children now face the same faith as the boarding school system expands to East Turkestan.
01:16Uyghurs have experienced mass arbitrary detention, forced labor,
01:23pervasive surveillance, family separation, and sweeping restrictions on our religion, language, and culture.
01:33For both of our peoples, this repression is aimed at something fundamental.
01:40Our ability to preserve our identity and pass it on to the next generation.
01:48That's why solidarity between Tibetans and Uyghurs matters.
01:55And it matters, especially today, as Xi Jinping is welcomed here in Washington, D.C.
02:04For Tibetans, Uyghurs, and others targeted by the Chinese government, repression does not stop at Chinese border.
02:15Even here in diaspora, many of us face a terrible question.
02:22Do we speak freely, or do we protect our families?
02:29China's new ethnic unity law makes that fear even more serious.
02:35Article 63 says that organizations and individuals outside China can face legal responsibility for actions
02:47Beijing considers harmful to ethnic unity.
02:52UN experts have warned that this provision creates a risk of transnational repression.
03:01Uyghurs are already seeing the consequences of this climate of fear.
03:06In July, Chinese authorities detained the mother and sisters of Gizal Nur Kamil,
03:13a Uyghur living in Turkey after they maintained ordinary family and business ties with her.
03:22Uyghur scholar Raila Dawood remains imprisoned under a life sentence.
03:29Retired Uyghur physician Gulshan Abbas remains imprisoned.
03:35And UN experts continue to raise concern about the enforced disappearance of the Panchal Lama,
03:43recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
03:47Today, Tibetans and Uyghurs stand together because the freedom to practice our religion,
03:54speak our languages, preserve our cultures and speak freely about what's happening to our people
04:01or fundamental human rights.
04:05They do not come from the Chinese Communist Party and they cannot legitimately be taken away by it.
04:16I think the people gathered here from different parts of the United States and Canada over here,
04:22so that's a very overwhelming experience in front of the Chinese embassy.
04:28The challenge seems to be that the securities, the secret service, not the DC police,
04:33but the secret service are the ones who are saying that even though you have a permit,
04:37you cannot enter and be at the gate of the Chinese embassy.
04:41So therefore, the people right now are gathered outside the Chinese embassy near the main row.
04:46They're going to do a protest rally with some remarks and then they're going to march down
04:51to the DuPont Circle and then onward to the capital.
04:56And the democratically elected leadership continues into the future.
05:01He has also led bipartisan efforts in Congress to confront the Chinese government's policies of
05:06forced assimilation, the Panshan Lama and calling attention to the so-called ethnic unity law
05:11and its implications for Tibetan language, religion and culture.
05:15U.S. government.
05:16And in 2015, he joined the historic congressional delegation to Tibet where human rights,
05:21religious freedom and the preservation of Tibetan culture were raised directly
05:25with Chinese hockey shows.

05:52She has been the conscience of Congress in fighting for human rights in Tibet and China.

06:06So, yesterday, President Trump welcomed Xi Jinping and Joint Base Andrews on a red carpet,
06:15a huge Chinese flag over their heads.
06:18Today, President Trump welcomed Xi Jinping to the White House.
06:25And tonight, President Trump gives Xi Jinping a state dinner.
06:32As this happens, Chinese authorities are erasing Tibet's unique culture, language and identity.
06:40They are removing Tibetan children from their homes and putting them in colonial boarding schools.
06:48They are jailing Tibetan monks who pray for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
06:55This is wrong.
06:57This is immoral.
06:59This is offensive.
07:01And shame on President Trump for behaving this way.
07:06Yesterday, I held a press conference with our Tibetan, Uyghur, Hong Kong and Chinese friends,
07:13with a simple and clear message.
07:16No Xi in D.C. without human rights.
07:24We demand that President Trump get tough on the Chinese government's abysmal human rights record.
07:31We demand he call out the CCP's abuse of basic freedoms.
07:37That he release all prisoners of conscience.
07:41We have been saying this all week.
07:45I posted a video calling on the President to demand Xi to tell us where the Pachalama is.
07:53And I've joined my colleagues in Congress in sending four letters to the administration
07:59with very clear asks.
08:02One, help free prisoners of conscience.
08:06Two, counter transnational repression.
08:09Three, reject China's ethnic unity law.
08:15And four, stop sending Tibetans, Uyghurs and others to ICE detention facilities
08:22and under no circumstances deport them to China.
