Mega Man 2 is a side-scrolling action platformer and the second game in the original Mega Man series. One year after his first defeat, Dr. Wily returns with eight new Robot Masters and another plan for world domination, sending Mega Man into battle once again. Players can tackle the eight main stages in any order, defeating bosses such as Metal Man, Air Man, Quick Man, and Wood Man to acquire their unique weapons. Each Robot Master is vulnerable to certain weapons, making the order in which the stages are completed an important part of the game.
Mega Man 2 introduced several features that became staples of the series, including Energy Tanks, special support items, eight Robot Masters instead of six, and a password system for continuing progress. The North American version also added Normal and Difficult settings, with Normal reducing the game's difficulty compared with the original Japanese release.
Mega Man 2 received widespread critical acclaim for its gameplay, graphics, music, level design, and improvements over its predecessor. Electronic Gaming Monthly's four reviewers each gave it an 8 out of 10, and the game has since appeared on numerous lists of the greatest NES and video games of all time.
