Achilles became so consumed by rage during the Trojan War that even a river god turned against him. After slaughtering Trojan warriors and filling the River Scamander with bodies, Achilles provoked the river itself.
In Homer’s Iliad, Scamander rises against Achilles, flooding the battlefield and nearly overwhelming the seemingly unstoppable Greek warrior. Achilles could massacre armies—but when nature itself fought back, even he needed divine help to survive.
Imagine being so dangerous that a river decides it has had enough of you.
