00:03Calls for a royal commission of inquiry into allegations of a corporate mafia network in Malaysia have intensified,
00:09with NGOs and political parties taking their demand to the streets on Sunday.
00:15Protesters gathered outside the Sogo shopping centre in Kuala Lumpur,
00:19urging the government to investigate allegations involving businessmen and certain Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers.
00:27In a statement, the Henti Bung Kamengio Secretariat said civil society groups and the public were growing tired of what
00:35it described as the government's broken promises.
00:43The group cited a February 11th Bloomberg report titled Who's Watching Malaysia's Anti-Corruption Watchdog,
00:49which detailed allegations that a group of businessmen allegedly working with certain MACC officers
00:55had pressured corporate figures in takeover cases.
00:58The report subsequently described the alleged network as a corporate mafia.
01:03The protesters outlined three demands – the establishment of an RCI into the allegations,
01:10an end to selective justice, and an end to efforts to silence those who speak out.
01:15The secretariat also cited the recent detention of Mandiri Executive Director Amir Hariri Abdul Hadi,
01:22and Finance Director Dobby Chu, which it claimed was an intimidation tactic.
01:27Amir, who spoke at the rally, claimed that the treatment of him and Chu reflected what he described as the
01:33modus operandi of the corporate mafia.
01:35Among those at the protest were former Subang MP Wong Chen, representing Party Bersama Malaysia, Bersay,
01:42and DAP Socialist Youth, DAPSI, as well as social activist Hishamuddin Madrais.
