00:00Update on the weather here. Much of the East Coast will have to endure another day of nasty weather from
00:04an early season nor'easter, still sitting above New York City and the East Coast.
00:08It is cold and nasty. It's brought heavy rain, wind, and flooding from Washington to New York, up to Boston,
00:13and led to hundreds of flight cancellations and delays.
00:16Meteorologist Craig Allen joins us again. Craig, it didn't seem too bad in a lot of areas, but I did
00:22see videos we were talking this morning, some bad flooding on the BQE, some other parts of lower Manhattan.
00:26Where was it really noticeable, and was it that much worse than a usual fall-winter storm?
00:33It was about on par with a strong nor'easter type of system.
00:39So it was definitely stronger than the average nor'easter, and there's still more to go across the area.
00:44We're taking a look at video of some of the flooding that has taken place from rain, but even more
00:51so for the East Coast, the coastal areas.
00:55Anywhere along the shore, from Maryland's eastern shore, right on up through Boston, Cape Cod, all the islands out there,
01:02it is one of those systems that's bringing in tide after tide, which is higher than normal.
01:09And we have something that's known as tidal piling.
01:12In other words, the water moves in, but it can't move out because of those strong northeasterly winds.
01:17And so each successive tide gets a little bit higher, and that's where we've seen some of the biggest flooding
01:24along the low-lying areas right along the coastline, saltwater flooding more so than freshwater flooding.
01:31But like I said, we're still not completely done.
01:34There you can see some of the flooding out there that continues across the area.
01:38And with each tide, I think we're going to see that it continues to still be well above normal, but
01:46there's one good piece of news.
01:48Now that the storm made its curve towards the New Jersey coast, it's going to start weakening.
01:53So we'll lose the wind a little bit, not the rain.
01:56There's going to be a few more rounds of rain right on into tonight and Monday, too.
02:00We're not done.
02:02But we're going to lose the strongest winds, the 50, 60, 70-mile-per-hour winds.
02:07In fact, folks, Montauk had a gust of 81 miles per hour.
02:12Wow.
02:12That's a lot.
02:14Incredible.
02:15Craig, I got the WhatsApp text this morning.
02:17Little League canceled, not because of rain immediately, but because of winds and the dangers of the winds.
02:23So I just want to tease out a bit from you what you were saying there.
02:25We're going to get these winds over the course of the day.
02:27What's going to determine how long this kind of sits over New York and Boston, when we're going to see
02:31it kind of begin to move away?
02:34That's what makes this particular storm so interesting at this point, is that it's just going to stall, and it
02:40may, before it turns around and heads back on out to sea, it may loop twice, almost like a spring
02:47coil.
02:47I see the weather maps trying to do that.
02:50It's along the Jersey Shore or New York Harbor right now.
02:53And like I said, it will begin to weaken somewhat.
02:57But the good news is that with the tides being as high as they are, the storms weakening and the
03:04wind weakening is certainly going to help the situation and lower the tides from this point on.
03:10And the winds won't be 50, 60, 70 miles per hour.
03:15However, there's definitely the likelihood of seeing more and more rainfall into this evening, so we're not done with the
03:23potential for freshwater flooding, too.
03:25And you know what else?
03:26I don't know if you got to see some of the trees that were down across the area.
03:32I mean, this thing ripped trees out of the ground that were hundreds or almost 100 years old.
03:38And unfortunately, we had some deaths yesterday.
03:42Don't want to get into the worst part of it, but, yeah, some folks were killed by the falling trees
03:47yesterday right in the New York City area, right around Brooklyn, too.
03:52You know who's not in such bad shape?
03:54D.C.
03:55The storm is just a little bit too far north of them.
03:58You'll have showery weathers down around the D.C. area, and there will be some gusty winds.
04:04But it's New York City on up to Boston that's getting the worst of this one.
04:07Craig, before we let you go, I want to pivot to the Pacific because you've also got two powerful hurricanes.
04:11It looks like they're coming at Mexico and Hawaii.
04:13I know I was out with some folks who have a house in Hawaii last night, and they were talking
04:17about how they feel like they're getting so many more storms there than they used to.
04:20They've lived there for almost a decade now.
04:23Third one for this season for Hawaii, and not only that, but this is only the third time in recorded
04:30history that we've had three hurricanes out there at one time in the Pacific, as I said, that were over
04:37100 miles per hour.
04:39So this is NOLO, Hurricane NOLO, which is going to have the center pass just south of the big island.
04:48And then you've also got HOLO, which is along the Mexican coastline, and that was a Category 5.
04:56That was a monster storm at one point.
04:58It's weakening a little bit as it's heading towards land at this time.
05:03However, it is going to bring a lot of rain, and I'm looking at some of the maps here, and
05:09I notice there are flood watches in effect for the whole Four Corners area of the United States.
05:15Isn't that something?
05:16The storm is actually going to do another one of those.
05:18This one's going to loop out across the Pacific and then come back in through the Baja of California and
05:24then come on in into the Four Corners with a lot of rain.
05:28Southern California, too, but more so for the Four Corners of the Southwest United States.
05:34So it's just a remarkable setup right now.
05:36There's a lot of storminess, and a lot of this is being fueled by something we talked about yesterday, and
05:42that is the strong, unbelievable El Nino.
05:45Yeah, look at that.
05:45I mean, this is your classic textbook hurricane out there.
05:49This is Polo, as it was over 180 miles per hour sustained and had at one time gusts that were
05:58over 200 miles per hour.
06:00That is one mighty and dangerous hurricane.
