Archaeologists in Bulgaria have uncovered one of the strangest finds from a Late Roman fortress: the remains of a man inside a huge ceramic storage jar.

The discovery was made at Deultum, where the vessel was found inside a gate tower surrounded by evidence of intense burning.

Two iron knives and a belt were found with the man.

Archaeologist Lyudmil Vagalinski suggested that he may have climbed into the jar while attempting to escape an attack and the fire spreading through the fortress.

His identity remains unknown, and the exact circumstances of his death are still being studied.

But the discovery offers a remarkably human glimpse into what life could look like when a Roman fortress suddenly came under attack.
