00:19¡Gracias!
00:36You guys know who I am, right?
00:42Hey, LeBron, right here.
00:43Gina Mizell with the Philadelphia Inquirer.
00:45Welcome to Philly.
00:46In the weeks since you made your decision to come here,
00:49just what are the most important things you've learned
00:51about the organization, teammates, coaches,
00:54just through workouts and conversations,
00:56and then with that information,
00:58what are sort of your initial steps
01:00in these first few days and weeks
01:02to both set the tone
01:03and then also acclimate yourself
01:05and just get used to a new environment?
01:08I would say the things that I've learned
01:10is everybody's kind of on the same page
01:13of the direction that the organization wants to be in,
01:15the players want to be in,
01:16the coaches want to be in,
01:17we all want to put the work in.
01:20That's the most important.
01:23Guys can go around talking
01:24and saying these things should happen,
01:26but, you know, nothing can happen
01:27unless you actually put the work in.
01:29So we are all speaking the same language.
01:32Everyone is highly motivated,
01:35but it's going to start, obviously, every single day,
01:37just getting 1% better every single day,
01:38starting tomorrow.
01:40So everyone's excited to be here,
01:42and that's exciting to be a part of.
01:45Tony Jones?
01:48LeBron, Tony Jones from The Athletic.
01:53One day, Shaquille O'Neal played on the same team as you,
01:58and one of the things that he said was
02:00that he wanted to help a younger version of yourself
02:03win a championship.
02:05What can you take from that experience
02:08as a younger version of yourself,
02:10and now as the elder statesman,
02:12kind of in part on, you know,
02:14some of the guys who are younger,
02:15and you're trying to take them to that place
02:19that Shaquille was trying to take you?
02:22I mean, I have a lot of experience in this game, obviously,
02:25so I hope that I could, you know,
02:28bring that experience, bring that knowledge,
02:31bring the blueprint to guys
02:33that's trying to accomplish some things
02:34that they haven't done in their career.
02:37I've seen everything that this league has to offer
02:40on the floor and off the floor,
02:42so I hope that, you know,
02:46every single day with my approach to the game,
02:49approach to the work,
02:51that it can translate to every single guy,
02:54and even guys that's been able to win at the highest level,
02:57so looking forward to that challenge.
03:01Good morning, LeBron.
03:03Dave McKenna with ESPN.
03:04You signed a one-plus-one deal with Philly.
03:07Take you year 24, year 25 if you pick up the option.
03:11Are you looking at this as your final contract
03:13and the final stop of your career?
03:19Honestly, I'm just looking at it every single day
03:23on how I can be the best version of myself
03:27for this franchise while I'm here.
03:29You know, I can't.
03:30I don't want to speak into the future right now.
03:32I think that would be doing a disservice to myself
03:36on just living in the moment,
03:38especially knowing that I am where I am in my career.
03:41So me trying to focus on what the future looks like
03:44would be like I wouldn't be giving myself grace.
03:48You know, I'm more in the present now.
03:51I understand that I'm in year 24.
03:54It won't be another year plus 24.
03:58So you know what I'm saying?
03:59So it's just like being in the moment, and we see what happens.
04:03Chris?
04:03LeBron, Chris Hine from the Philadelphia Inquirer.
04:06You mentioned on your podcast the other day
04:08that there's going to be times this year where the team struggles.
04:11You might go three and six or something like that
04:14throughout the course of the season.
04:15And when you have a group like this that's also trying to come together,
04:19what are some of the things you've learned that you're going to impart
04:21on keeping the team together
04:23and the most important qualities that help you navigate
04:26those tough stretches of a season,
04:28but maybe they can also bring you closer together at the same time?
04:31Yeah, just never get too hard, never get too long.
04:33You've got to try to stay even keel.
04:35Understand that the noise is going to be the noise.
04:37What happens outside of this building is going to consistently happen,
04:41and it's going to be doubled and tripled and quadrupled now that I'm here.
04:45And it just comes with the territory.
04:47I understand it.
04:49So the work that we put in in this building,
04:52the work that we put in when we're on the road, watching film,
04:55the work that we put in will take care of itself.
04:59Guys will just have to, you know, guys will hold each other accountable.
05:01You know, we put the work in.
05:03We have honest conversations and things of that nature.
05:05So, you know, just staying even keel
05:07and everything that's going on out there does not matter.
05:11It does not matter at all.
05:12It's about the results and the things that happens in this building for us.
05:16And if we do that, we're a really talented team,
05:19but talent only gets you so far.
05:22But if you put the work in
05:24and you continue to get better and better every day
05:26and you have this championship approach every day to get 1% better,
05:31then it definitely will work in our favor.
05:35Hi, LeBron.
05:37Over here.
05:37Over here.
05:38Adam Aronson from Philly Voice.
05:40Welcome.
05:41First of all, I'm just curious what you envision your role being,
05:43like, on the court,
05:44whether that's through your conversations with Nick or Mike
05:47or the other guys on the team.
05:48Are you the point guard of this team?
05:49Are you a connecting four?
05:51Like, what do you envision on a day-to-day basis out there your role is?
05:55Whatever the team needs for me to do.
05:59I think the luxury of my game is I can do everything.
06:07Literally, I can do everything.
06:12Hey, LeBron.
06:13Right here.
06:13Kyle Newback from PHLY Sports.
06:16You talked a lot this summer about still loving the process behind everything,
06:21being the reason that you're still playing.
06:23I guess I would ask,
06:25are there things that you won't miss about the process when you're done?
06:31And I guess how this deep into your career do you focus on the rest of what comes with that?
06:39Well, there will be things that I won't enjoy about the process when I'm done.
06:45No.
06:46I think the process for me is just something I've always enjoyed.
06:50But I think there's things that's along the way that entails of being a professional athlete
06:59that I will be happy to step away from when that time comes.
07:04But the actual process of putting in the work,
07:06that's something I would never get tired of.
07:10It's just who I am.
07:11It's just part of my DNA.
07:13So there's things that does come with being a professional athlete,
07:17being away from your family a lot, being away from your kids a lot,
07:19sacrificing a lot of time where you could be with loved ones and things of that nature,
07:23missing a lot of things that your kids got going on.
07:26My middle son right now is starting a sophomore campaign at Tucson in Arizona.
07:29My daughter just started middle school.
07:32My oldest son, my former teammate, is starting his third year in Los Angeles.
07:37And my wife is doing so many unbelievable things right now on her own personal journey.
07:41So those are the things that being where I am in the process,
07:45those things are intertwined that I would be like,
07:48yeah, I don't miss that.
07:50But as far as the time and the work ethic and things that I put in,
07:54as far as the process and that, I would never, ever be like,
07:59oh, I'm glad that's over.
08:00No, that's just a part of my DNA.
08:01Joe.
08:02Joe Varden, The Athletic.
08:04I want to talk to you a little bit about Joel.
08:07I heard what you said in your podcast the other day
08:09about wanting to help him get a ring here
08:13and then also maybe even trying to help him a little bit with his day-to-day.
08:17You two were teammates a couple years ago in Paris.
08:21What did you see from him that you liked process-wise
08:25and what are the things that you're talking about
08:27that you think you can help him with on a day-to-day?
08:30Well, I mean, I've got to get here first.
08:32I'm just now one day, not even one day in, obviously,
08:35just here being in a facility.
08:39So I am just looking forward to just obviously seeing
08:42what his process is as well.
08:44You know, Joe is one of the most talented guys that we have in the world.
08:47And obviously we all know that, you know, for him it's just been about health.
08:52You know, how can he stay healthy to be the best version of himself,
08:57be the best version of himself, to be the best version of us as a team.
09:02And I've seen he putting a lot of work on his body,
09:05putting a lot of work in his game, a lot of work on his mental this offseason.
09:10So that is, you know, a big upside, not only for us as his teammates,
09:17but I guarantee it is for him.
09:18I don't want to speak for him.
09:19You guys will talk to him, but I guarantee that's a big, good feeling for him.
09:23So me as like the elder statesman of the team,
09:29the guy that's been through a lot, hopefully I can just give him resources
09:33and give him whatever he needs on a day-to-day basis
09:37to make him feel even more and more comfortable about where he is,
09:40about where we are as a team, both on the floor and off the floor.
09:44So I'm definitely in this corner,
09:48and I can't wait to be out there on the court with him again like we was in 24 with
09:53the Olympics.
09:54Rachel.
09:55Rachel Nichols, Fox Sports.
09:57LeBron, you've switched teams, you've switched cities over your career.
10:01What is particular and different about this time around,
10:04given how long you've been in the league,
10:06your family, not being here, this city in particular,
10:09what has the experience been like for you to settle in here?
10:12I'm still settling in.
10:14You know, it's still fresh for me.
10:15I'm learning new streets, learning new people.
10:19You know, so it's been eight years since I've been on this side of the country.
10:24You know, so, you know, just getting back to the weather, things of that nature.
10:31But I'm super excited.
10:33Like I said, just being here, I'm super excited to get in front of these fans.
10:39They know sports, they know ball, and if you're not doing what you're supposed to do,
10:45they're going to let you hear it.
10:46And I'm excited about that, and that's holding people accountable.
10:49So, you know, it's a sports town.
10:52You know, it's the only, I believe, it's the only sports town where, like,
10:57all the teams are in the same parking lot, basically.
10:59You know, all of them.
11:00You know, and I'm excited to just be a part of this,
11:04to be a part of the feeling, be a part of the vibe,
11:07and to go out and play for something that's, you know, more than, you know,
11:12myself, more than, you know, the players in the locker room, but for the whole city.
11:18Dan Gelston, the Associated Press.
11:19LeBron, what was the specific kind of moment or day or conversation you had
11:24where it hit you that this was where you wanted to be,
11:27and how close, if at all, did you come to going somewhere else?
11:31I mean, I had a list of five teams that I was interested in.
11:38I think, you know, if you saw my agent in his little podcast,
11:44you saw his whiteboard and whatever.
11:47I love him to death, but he had his whiteboard up there,
11:49and he had all his LeBron teams up there.
11:52So I had a group of teams that I was interested in,
11:55and, you know, I have a really, really good, I'm going to say good,
12:01great relationship with Tyrese, and we talked a lot.
12:08You know, I kind of picked his brain a lot on not only where you see his career going,
12:14you know, how he see the franchise here, how much he believes in the franchise,
12:20and if I was to, you know, come here, how does he see me fitting in?
12:24Do we think it would be a plus, or do we think it would be a negative?
12:28Because I understand what my personality and what comes with me.
12:33Sometimes it could be a negative.
12:35You know, I understand.
12:36Some people maybe can't handle what I may bring to the table,
12:39and I was just asking all the questions that I could ask to him,
12:43and it wasn't just one conversation.
12:46But I think our relationship kind of, when I broke a lot of the teams down
12:51and I broke a lot of the franchises down that I could possibly play for,
12:57he was one of the main deciding factors.
13:01So, yeah.
13:03Paul?
13:04Paul Hunter, Caliberty Ballers, right here, LeBron.
13:07Just curious, Vijay Edgecombe is a guy who's, you know, came in here as a rookie,
13:10had a really big role.
13:12Things are going to change a little bit for him.
13:14I guess how can you kind of help him along and kind of help him find his place on this
13:18team?
13:20Yeah, I've been hearing, like, you know, things are going to change for him.
13:22I don't understand why things were changed for him.
13:25I think with his dynamic, him being able to get out in transition
13:31and attack defenses before the defense is set,
13:35his ability in the half-court situation where we're able to attract multiple eyes
13:41and he's able to catch it on a catch-and-go or, you know, off-balance defense.
13:46I don't think his role should change.
13:50I think with the group of guys that we have,
13:54no one mentioned that everybody's role will probably be different, you know,
13:59and that's for the greater good.
14:00If we want to accomplish something that's really, really important,
14:04like if we say that we want to do something special,
14:08there will be a collective sacrifice in a good way.
14:12You know, sometimes in sports people hear sacrifice
14:14and you automatically, people start thinking negative about it.
14:17It's not a negative thing.
14:18You know, you can sacrifice one or two more shots
14:21that gives you one or two more bursts of energy in the fourth quarter
14:25to slide over and take a charge
14:27or give you one or two more bursts of energy
14:30to get an offensive rebound for extra possession to kick out for a teammate
14:34or an extra two bursts of energy to run back in defense
14:39and get a chase-down block.
14:41I think some things that don't show up in the box scores, you know,
14:44so it's not a negative when people say, okay, you have to make a sacrifice
14:50or your role may change.
14:52If we're trying to do something special, which I believe we are,
14:58then that's a positive.
15:01There's so many guys like that's been in our league
15:05over the course of my career that has never made a sacrifice in their career
15:10and they averaged 20 points and 22 points a game
15:13and they've had one or two postseason appearances
15:17and zero postseason wins.
15:21If that's the way your career,
15:22if that's the way you want your career to be, then that's fine.
15:25Everyone has different goals, but I don't think anybody downstairs
15:28or I don't think anybody in the locker room have that feeling
15:31and want that career to be like that or we wouldn't be here.
15:35Final two questions, Pat there.
15:37LeBron, Pat Gallant from CBS.
15:40You've obviously been in Philadelphia over the years,
15:42but to what degree do you know this city?
15:46And you mentioned the passion of the fans.
15:49What has your experience been like coming here as a visitor over the years?
15:55It's been both.
15:57It's been like, okay, we respect the way you play the game
16:01because we know the game and we know the history of the game
16:03and we've seen so many players play.
16:07But we hate you.
16:10You're not with us.
16:12We hate you.
16:13And I love that.
16:15I actually really love that.
16:16I really thrive under that circumstance.
16:19But, yeah, it's been always mutual respect.
16:21It's always been mutual respect with myself and the Philly fans.
16:28We're going to be on the same side now, guys.
16:30So I need a little hate.
16:33So I hope we can just get some people that's not like real Philly fans
16:36and we just put them in the crowd so I can just get that tension.
16:39But it's been great.
16:41I mean, like I said, I've been doing this for, what, 23 years now.
16:45And I actually came here in high school as well
16:47and played at the Palestra my senior year.
16:49And it was that same type of atmosphere, you know.
16:52So I'm happy to be on this side, though.
16:56Derek Botner of PHLY Sports.
16:58You have a lot of players here over here who have never played alongside of each other.
17:02You've obviously been through that a couple times throughout your career.
17:04In your experience, what's the key to sort of like expediting the chemistry
17:08and cohesion you'll need to win in May and June?
17:11Yeah, I think the best way to expedite it is obviously the floor, the practice court.
17:18That helps.
17:20The film sessions helps.
17:22The bus rides, the plane rides, the camaraderie.
17:27Like those things help.
17:32It's going to take time.
17:33It's going to take time.
17:36I think people, you know, sometimes they, like, they don't really want to work.
17:44And everyone wants, like, instant oatmeal.
17:46You just put the oatmeal in the bowl.
17:48You put the water in it, throw it in the microwave.
17:49In a minute and a half, you got something to eat.
17:51You're ready to go.
17:53Like, if you want to do something special, it takes time.
17:56And it takes, like, every single day doing things that you may not want to do
18:03because it's, like, the same thing over and over and over and over and over.
18:08Repetition after repetition after repetition.
18:11In order for us to be great, we have to do things that are just not comfortable.
18:17We have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
18:19That is the best way to expedite being great.
18:23You have to fall in love with doing things that's uncomfortable.
18:26And if we can do that, then we can be a great team.
18:29I mean, if we don't do that, then we'll be like, oh, man, it was a great team on paper
18:34and we had a lot of great talent and we lost in the second round.
18:40Like, I don't want to do that.
18:42I didn't leave my family to lose in the second round.
18:45I know that for sure.
18:46So work needs to be done and I'm ready to put the work in.
18:50Thank you, LeBron.
18:51Thank you.
