US Coast Guard crew and partner agencies rescue at least 40 people and recover two bodies after a makeshift vessel capsizes about 10 miles off Mona Island, Puerto Rico, on Sept. 28, 2026. According to a US Coast Guard press release, survivors told authorities that an estimated 60 people were aboard when a fight broke out late Sept. 27, leaving several people injured with a machete and prompting others to jump into the water and attempt to swim to shore. The merchant vessel Tripiti alerted Coast Guard Sector San Juan around noon on the same day after rescuing four people from the water.
