Legendary band Fishbone is still RED HOT. Decades into a career built on fearless genre-blending and high-energy performances, Angelo Moore and Christopher Dowd are still making music together and finding new ways to move Fishbone forward. The two musicians first met when they were just 12 years old in band class, beginning a friendship and creative partnership that would eventually become part of the foundation of Fishbone. Now, the band is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its 1986 debut full-length album, In Your Face, with the limited-edition double LP In Your Face / Cover Your Face. The release pairs a newly remastered edition of the original album with Cover Your Face, a tribute collection of artists reinterpreting Fishbone’s songs. Silversun Pickups took on “In the Air,” while Doom Regulator—featuring Tim Armstrong, Jesse Michaels, Joey Castillo and Spencer Pollard—reimagined “Simon Says ‘The Kingpin.’” The milestone isn’t only about looking back. Fishbone is also working on new music, with Dowd telling LifeMinute Editor-in-Chief Joann Butler that a new record is expected before the end of the year. She hopped aboard Fishbone’s tour bus during a spring New Jersey stop on the In Your Face 40th Anniversary Tour for a stripped-down conversation with the band. Watch Moore and Dowd look back on In Your Face 40 years later and talk about the music—and momentum—still ahead for Fishbone. This is a LifeMinute with Fishbone.

00:00I'm Angelo Moore.
00:01I'm Chris Dowd.
00:02We're Fishbone.
00:03And you're watching Life Minute TV.
00:1240th anniversary show.
00:14It's controversial.
00:16Why is it controversial?
00:18You know, yin-yang.
00:21I want to play more music.
00:22He wants to play less.
00:24I want to play adolescent regressive behavior.
00:26Why do we keep on dying?
00:28Love is love.
00:29My God is better than your God.
00:31Living in the Upside Down.
00:32That's like five songs off of the Stockholm Syndrome release
00:35that we did.
00:36That we'll be playing some off tonight.
00:38And he doesn't want to really...
00:40He doesn't really rehearse his songs.
00:42He waits to the last minute.
00:44Now we out here and we don't know how to do it.
00:45That's one way of looking at it.
00:5340 years.
00:54Could you imagine 40 years?
00:56It's hard to believe.
00:57I've been here the whole time.
00:59He left for about 20 years.
01:0020 years, is that what it was?
01:02I'm glad he came back though.
01:03I enjoy his company.
01:05Tell us about the new album.
01:06In Your Face, 40th.
01:08Yes.
01:08We wanted to do something extra.
01:11Like have the opportunity to interact and sort of have a creative conversation with other
01:17people about our music.
01:19Who picked the songs?
01:20Like who decided who was going to do what?
01:22The artists came and they picked like Silver Sun pickups picked In The Air and Jesse Michaels
01:29and Tim Armstrong picked Simon Says and so on and so forth.
01:35You know, when we had done a tour last year with Less Than Jake and we met Cat Byte, it
01:40was just such a cool hang.
01:41And when they heard we were making that record, they were like, oh, I want to do Wish I Had
01:45a Dave and just kind of all just, you know, sort of came together.
01:50The universe conspired in our favor.
01:59It is a miracle when anybody wants to listen to anything you have to say creatively.
02:06It's like a real, it's a real milestone because there's so much in the world going on that somebody
02:13would even take the time to stop and listen to anything you have to say and treat it with any
02:19value.
02:20It's an incredible thing to be a part of.
02:23I attribute a lot of it to this talented young man right here.
02:28Oh, thank you, sir.
02:29I appreciate y'all.
02:30Such a great talent.
02:32Your benevolence and observation.
02:34One of a kind.
02:36I knew it when I met him.
02:38He was different.
02:39When did you guys meet?
02:40How old were you?
02:41Twelve.
02:42We were kids.
02:43We were in junior high school, a little earlier than junior high school.
02:47Twelve years old.
02:48Can you imagine?
02:49Mr. Robbins band class.
02:51Did you guys always know you wanted to play, be a musician?
02:54Definitely.
02:55I did.
02:56I knew when I was about eight.
02:58I saw Michael Jackson do ABC and I was like, I'm in, where do I sign up?
03:08Then I met Angelo and I actually got to meet Michael Jackson because of Angelo.
03:13Michael Jackson went to my Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall in Woodland Hills.
03:17They went through church together.
03:18Huh?
03:19Yeah.
03:19What about you, Angelo?
03:20Did you always know you wanted to be a musician?
03:23I always thought I was going to be a dancer at first.
03:27I really miss the dancer.
03:28And so then I learned how to play music.
03:30So in between my pop locking group, Royal Plexo Flex and Fishbone, which was called Diamonds
03:37and Things at the time, I had to make a choice.
03:40So I chose Fishbone and I learned how to play an instrument so that I could make the dancer
03:45dance rather than being just the dancer being moved by the music.
03:57We're working on a record now that will be out before the end of the year.
04:01The level of perfection that me and Angelo sort of strive for, even with the realization
04:07that there's no such thing as perfection, it's still a process.
04:12It takes time to be creative.
04:14It takes time to do something when you're trying to do something at a certain level.
04:17And we've seen you over the years, you move the same way you did, you know, when I was
04:2320.
04:23Oh my God.
04:23I'm not 20 anymore.
04:25How do you do that?
04:26Yeah, that's right.
04:27How?
04:28What is your secret?
04:29Let the music carry you.
04:30Yeah.
04:31What does music do for people?
04:33It expands the mind.
04:35Music is like this strange thing where it connects us all in one way and the people that
04:41create it are just pulling it from the air.
04:45We're a conductor.
04:45It's like magic.
04:46Magic without the magic trick.
04:49We're catching the signal and translating it into the music, you know.
04:53From nothing.
04:54The vibrations from.
04:55From nothing though.
04:57You know what I mean?
04:57People to be healed from.
04:58Yeah.
04:59I think that's the most incredible part about it.
05:02It's a healing.
05:03It just comes from like, you know.
05:05Music heals.
05:06So much of what's happened in the last couple years with Angelo and I being the two people
05:12that, you know, carry the mantle of what we started when we were 12, so much of it is just
05:19like,
05:20it's unbelievable.
05:22It's like hitting the lottery.
05:24It's like hitting the lottery.
05:27It's like hitting the lottery.
05:28Action!
