A dramatic turn of events unfolded in Tennessee as death row inmate Christa Pike reportedly remained alive after two lethal-injection doses were administered during her scheduled execution.
According to her attorneys, witnesses said Pike was still breathing, snoring, and had a heartbeat after the injections. Her lawyers quickly filed an emergency motion seeking to stop the execution, while emergency vehicles were reportedly seen arriving and leaving the prison.
The development came hours after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a temporary stay that had paused Pike’s execution. If carried out, Pike’s execution would make her the first woman executed by Tennessee since 1819.
Pike, now 50, was sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom prosecutors said she attacked with two accomplices.
Her supporters have argued that her defense failed to adequately present mitigating circumstances, including alleged mental-health issues and a history of abuse.
The case remains under intense legal scrutiny.
