00:06¡Atención! ¡Tribunal!
00:09Judges from Britain, America, Russia and France assemble in Nuremberg's courthouse.
00:14Empowered to impose sentence of death, or such punishment as it may consider just,
00:18the tribunal sits in judgment upon 20 leaders of the Nazi party.
00:23After a first day spent in reading the 30,000 word indictment,
00:26the unemotional tones of Lord Justice Lawrence, President of the Court,
00:30open the second day's proceedings.
00:32On Thursday, the 18th of October, 1945, in Berlin,
00:39the indictment was lodged with the tribunal.
00:43And a copy of that indictment, in the German language,
00:48has been furnished to each defendant
00:51and has been in his possession more than 30 days.
00:56So begins the case of humanity against the makers of war.
01:02The defendants
01:04are to plead guilty
01:06or not guilty
01:08for the charges against them.
01:11Hermann
01:13Wilhelm
01:13Göring.
01:15Thinner, and without the notorious medals,
01:18the once mighty Nazi No. 2
01:20still postures in the limelight.
01:22While he waited in the dock,
01:24he wrote a statement which he tried to read
01:25before entering his plea.
01:27He said,
01:27Before I answer the question,
01:29whether I am guilty or not guilty,
01:31now that was as far as he got.
01:45I informed the court that defendants were not entitled
01:53to make a statement.
01:57You must plead guilty
01:58or not guilty.
02:05Furious, the one-time Reich marshal shouts,
02:07I declare myself not guilty.
02:09And now Hess,
02:11the mentally hazy Hess,
02:12the lost memory man.
02:14Rudolf Hess.
02:30That will be entered as a plea of not guilty.
02:33The Ribbentrop,
02:34pale, nervous,
02:36picks up the refrain of
02:37not guilty.
02:38I am guilty for not guilty.
02:42Object lessons in psychology.
02:43The character of each comes out
02:45in the manner of his
02:46not guilty plea.
02:49Wilhelm Keitel.
02:59Wilhelm Rigg.
03:01Ex-Minister of the Interior.
03:09Julius Streicher.
03:11Pronounced sane by medical experts,
03:14Jubater No. 1 stands trial with arrest.
03:17Nicht schuldig.
03:20Walter Funk.
03:23This is Hitler's ex-economic advisor.
03:30Wir kennen mich nicht als schuldig.
03:38Hitler's money wizard buries the words,
03:41but still pleads.
03:43Not guilty.
03:49Ich bin in keiner Beise schuldig.
03:55Erich Rader.
03:57Ex-U-Boat Chief.
04:00Mr. Kenwin's missed schuldig.
04:03The Nazi Youth Leader.
04:04Waldo Monchirach.
04:09Ich bekenne mich im Sinne der Anklage als nicht schuldig.
04:15Arthur.
04:17Arthur Seiss Ingvar.
04:19Ex-Gauleiter of Holland.
04:22Ich bekenne mich nicht schuldig.
04:27Albert Speer.
04:28Now the backroom Nazi and armaments chief.
04:33Miss Schuldig.
04:36There have always been ambitious and ruthless men ready to gamble with the lives of their fellows.
04:41Now for the first time international gangsters stand trial as common criminals.
04:45Goering still trying to read his statement and still getting nowhere.
04:49You are not entitled to address the tribunal except through your counsel at the present time.
04:57Opening the Allied case against the defendants, Chief American Prosecutor Justice Jackson.
05:02Opening the first trial in history for crimes against the peace of the world imposes a grave responsibility.
05:14The wrongs which we seek to condemn and punish have been so calculated, so malignant and so devastating
05:25that civilisation cannot tolerate their being ignored because it cannot survive their being repeated.
05:38Goering was still switching from glum despair to spells of clowning at the end of the second day's proceedings.
05:43But the lengthening lists of counts covered by the indictment left its mark on everyone but Hess, who showed little
05:49interest in anything.
05:51Goering wrote sheet after sheet of notes and suggestions for his defending counsel.
05:56Ex-Warchief Keitel and Ribbentrop spoke only rarely.
06:03Hess came to life once.
06:04Perhaps he'd forgotten to remember, he'd lost his memory.
06:11On the third day, Major Coogan took over the prosecution.
06:15First, a brief reference to the history of the Nazi party.
06:21The court will no doubt recollect that the National Socialist Party had its origin in the German Labour Party,
06:32which was founded on the 5th of January 1919 in Munich.
06:40It was this organisation which Hitler joined as seventh member on the 12th of September,
06:481919.
06:53At a meeting of the German Labour Party held on the 24th of February, 1920,
07:01Hitler announced to the world the 25 BCs that subsequently became known as the unalterable program
07:12of the National Socialist German Workers Party.
07:17As a new religion, the faith of the blood,
07:25superseding in individual allegiance, all other religions and institutions.
07:35The defendant Rosenberg and the defendant Stryker were particularly prominent in disseminating this doctrine.
07:49Much of the evidence to be offered in this case
07:52will illustrate the Nazi conspirators' continued espousal and exploitation of this master race doctrine.
08:22Imagination sickens at the crimes laid upon the accused, now stripped of the trappings of power.
08:27The world's writ has run to Nuremberg, and justice waits.
08:32And, at one point, the safety and of the law.
08:39The
