00:05Hey guys, the ocean covers most of the Earth's surface, but even now, so much of its depths
00:11remains difficult to observe directly. And maybe that's why, for hundreds of years,
00:16so many stories have surfaced about strange creatures said to be lurking beneath the sea's
00:20surface. There are mysterious sounds heard thousands of kilometers away, tentacled monsters
00:27feared by sailors, to creatures resembling giant humans that were allegedly seen swimming in
00:33Antarctic waters. Here are seven legends of mysterious sea creatures that still make so
00:38many people curious to this day.
00:51In first place, we have the bloop, a mysterious underwater sound that once sparked speculation
00:56about the existence of an extraordinarily massive creature. In 1997, NOAA researchers
01:02monitoring the Pacific Ocean recorded a bizarre sound using hydrophones. The sound was so powerful
01:07that it was picked up by sensors thousands of kilometers apart. That recording later came
01:14to be known as the bloop.
01:20Back then, the source was still unknown, yet various possibilities had already emerged. On the internet,
01:25theories that were far more terrifying arose, suggesting the sound was very likely produced
01:30by a colossal sea creature lurking in the depths.
01:33That theory became even more fascinating because the sound originated from a remote area in the
01:39South Pacific Ocean, and if a sound that powerful truly came from an animal, many people imagined that
01:45the creature must have been extraordinarily large.
01:50However, NOAA later discovered sounds from ice activity around Antarctica that shared very similar
01:55characteristics. From this, the conclusion emerged that the bloop likely originated from an icequake,
02:01which is the sound of massive ice layers or icebergs cracking and breaking apart.
02:08Even so, for some mystery enthusiasts, that explanation hasn't entirely put the legend of the bloop to rest.
02:14They still wonder how such a bizarre and powerful sound could be heard over thousands of kilometers.
02:33Next up is the Kraken, a legendary sea monster that has been the scourge of sailors for hundreds of years.
02:40In various tales from the Scandinavian region, the Kraken is described as an extraordinarily massive
02:46tentacled creature. It is said that when it surfaces, its tentacles can seize ships and drag them down to the
02:51ocean floor. Although the story sounds like a fairy tale, interestingly enough, the ocean actually has
02:58a creature that looks remarkably like the Kraken. That creature is the giant squid! This creature lives in
03:08the deep sea and has extremely long tentacles. In fact, for centuries, people were much more likely to
03:13find its carcass than to ever see it alive in its natural habitat.
03:20Besides the giant squid, there is also the colossal squid that lives around Antarctica.
03:25Its body is even heavier and it has hooks on its arms and tentacles.
03:31That is why some scientists suspect that ancient sailors' encounters with large squids might be one
03:37of the origins of the Kraken legend. Even so, a squid as large as the Kraken described in legends has
03:43never
03:44been found, let alone one capable of destroying a large ship. Yet the fact that a creature once
03:50thought impossible actually lives in the ocean depths keeps one question intriguing to this day.
03:57If a squid that huge could hide in the deep sea, could there be an even bigger one out there
04:02that
04:02we've never found yet?
04:18Next up is the Sea Serpent, a mysterious creature depicted as a giant snake living in the middle of
04:23the ocean. Stories about this creature have been around for centuries. Sailors from various regions
04:31have claimed to see something with an extremely long winding body briefly surface before vanishing back
04:36into the depths of the sea. In fact, in 1848, a crew of the British warship HMS Daedalus reported seeing
04:46a long serpent-like creature while sailing in the South Atlantic. That sighting later became one of the
04:53most famous sea serpent reports of its time. Of course, there are many possible explanations. Animals like
05:02oarfish, whales, sharks, or even several creatures swimming in a line could look like a single long
05:08creature when seen from a distance. However, to this day, no scientific evidence has ever been found
05:17that giant sea serpents as described in legends actually exist. Even so, the sheer number of
05:25similar stories from sailors over hundreds of years has kept the legend of the sea serpent alive.
05:31Were they all just mistaking ordinary animals? Or was there once something we don't recognize
05:36swimming among them? To this day, the legend remains a mystery.
06:03Next up is the Ningen, a mysterious creature that was allegedly spotted in the icy waters around
06:09Antarctica. Unlike other sea monsters, the Ningen is described as having a very bizarre shape.
06:15Its body is pale white, massive in size, and at first glance looks like a giant human swimming
06:20in the ocean. This legend began gaining popularity on the Japanese internet in the 2000s.
06:27The story claims that a research ship's crew once saw a white creature, tens of meters in size,
06:33appearing near the surface. Several blurry photos and videos then began circulating,
06:38claimed to be sightings of the Ningen. However, to this day, there is no scientific evidence to
06:44prove the existence of this creature. The photos can be explained as icebergs, whales, or other objects
06:51that look strange from a distance, while the stories about the ship crew's testimonies are also difficult
06:56to verify. That is why the Ningen is better known as an internet legend or a modern cryptid, rather than
07:02a
07:03creature whose existence has actually been documented. Even so, the location of its sightings makes this
07:10story feel all the more terrifying. Antarctica has vast freezing waters that are difficult to explore.
07:29Next up is the Cadborosaurus, better known as Caddy, a mysterious creature said to live in the waters of the
07:35North Pacific, especially around the coast of British Columbia, Canada. This creature is usually
07:41described as having a long snake-like body, a neck rising out of the water, a head resembling a horse,
07:48and a fin-like rear end. Over the years, various sighting reports have emerged from fishermen and people
07:57around the coast. Over the years, the most famous case occurred in 1937, when a strange carcass was
08:03found inside the stomach of a sperm whale and subsequently photographed. Many people also thought
08:09its shape resembled the depiction of Caddy. However, scientists do not recognize Cadborosaurus as a
08:19proven species. A number of sightings were actually suspected to be sea lions, or fish, whales, or other
08:25animals viewed from a certain angle. The problem is, there's no intact specimen available for examination
08:34to confirm that Caddy really is an unknown animal. That's why, to this day, Cadborosaurus remains
08:40somewhere between folklore, misidentification, and the possibility of an undiscovered animal.
08:59Next up is the Globster, a name for the mysterious carcasses that have washed ashore on various beaches
09:04around the world several times. They are usually very bizarre in shape, massive in size, pale in color,
09:13and sometimes have body parts that look like tentacles or the flesh of an unknown creature. Besides,
09:19their already decomposing state makes them even harder to identify.
09:25One famous case is the St. Augustine monster, a giant carcass found in Florida in 1896.
09:34Back then, some people even suspected the carcass came from a giant octopus, a giant unknown to mankind.
09:42However, advances in DNA technology later provided explanations for many Globster cases. Some of them
09:49turned out to be the decomposed remains of whales or other marine animals, drastically altering their
09:55original shapes.
10:10And last but not least, there's Luska, a sea monster that has become a legend in the Bahamas.
10:16Luska is said to lurk inside a blue hole, a very deep underwater sinkhole connected to a network of caves.
10:22This creature is often described as resembling a giant octopus, and in some stories it's even said
10:27to be large enough to drag humans or small boats beneath the water.
10:32The legend of Luska becomes even more terrifying because some blue holes do have strong currents
10:38and intricate underwater passageways. When a person or an object vanished inside,
10:43the locals back then linked it to a creature lurking in the depth.
10:49It is possible that the story was inspired by a large octopus that does inhabit the Caribbean region.
10:55Meanwhile, incidents of people being pulled into the blue hole can be explained by the currents and
11:01hazardous underwater cave structure.
11:10Those are seven legends of mysterious sea creatures that still keep many people intrigued to this day.
