00:00Wow, this next story is an attention-getter for sure.
00:03Last September, an Ohio woman went into surgery
00:05for a planned amputation of her right leg due to cancer,
00:10except when she woke up, her left leg was gone.
00:14And now she is suing the surgeon and members of the surgical team.
00:17Kevin Landers from our sister station in Columbus reports.
00:22Inside Selby General Hospital in Marietta,
00:24the unthinkable happens, says attorney Brad Lane.
00:27She went into surgery, and when she woke up,
00:31the wrong leg had been taken off.
00:36Yeah, and defies explanation, obviously.
00:41His client, 74-year-old Sharon Jacks, was left a double amputee
00:45after her doctor removed her left leg instead of the cancerous right one
00:50during a surgery in September of last year.
00:52I can tell you from what I've determined
00:54that the surgeon actually marked the correct leg pre-surgery.
01:01The mark was still on the correct leg
01:04after the wrong leg had been taken off.
01:07This 32-page complaint names the entire surgical team
01:11and hospital as defendants.
01:13According to the complaint,
01:14the surgery team took two surgical timeouts
01:16designed to verify critical procedure details
01:19and prevent medical errors.
01:21And every person in that operating room
01:24is responsible to make sure that that is verified
01:27before moving forward.
01:28And that includes the doctor, the staff,
01:31the nurses, the anesthesiologist,
01:33everybody that's involved.
01:35The records say that that happened twice,
01:37but somehow Ms. Jacks is missing a leg
01:43that should have not been removed.
01:44The nine-count complaint says the performance
01:47of the surgical team was, quote,
01:49a complete failure of basic safety procedures.
01:52It shouldn't happen in any type of medicine.
01:54It shouldn't happen, you know, anywhere.
01:58It shouldn't happen in a veterinary setting even, you know.
