00:00in the head coach of america's team on dfw sports station good morning coach how are you
00:05morning guys hey uh baseball youth baseball's tough a lot of travel involved a lot of places
00:10you got to get to and uh tell them we'll miss them and expensive isn't it very sure maybe
00:17volleyball is worse i've heard oh my goodness what can the investment in volleyball be just
00:23i think like a uniform oh just the travel as brev farve as travel yeah uh coach what type of
00:29players joey porter jr no i tell you what it was number one it was great to get him in
00:33the in the
00:34room in the building he was uh really excited when we made the trade and got the trade pulled off
00:38but
00:38uh what you'll see from joey is uh uh really tall really long uh really physical at the line of
00:44scrimmage and everything that he does both in from a uh you know past coverage standpoint putting his
00:49hands on people at the line of scrimmage but you also see the guy's ability to really run
00:52run and chase but uh guys a unique talent that we're thrilled to have man does this happen you
00:59think with a ravens win and and a healthier secondary or do you think that jerry and steven
01:06push the pedal down a little harder because of those things well i think it's more of the fact
01:11we're you know we're in a win now mode and we we've talked about that from the very beginning you
01:14know we we kind of make light of it jerry's 84 years old you know we've got uh dac prescott
01:19playing
01:19at an mvp level right now we've got a couple uh incredible receivers and uh a chance to go get
01:25a young player like joey and uh add him to your roster with a secondary that is very very beat
01:31up
01:31i think it happens no matter what uh and i think you know we're always in the business of going
01:36and
01:36finding great players and uh people like to call the cowboys because uh we're not afraid to to make
01:41deals what will determine him playing sunday you know he had a great start yesterday uh i think the
01:47big thing today is okay now we got to get in some red zone stuff things like that but i
01:51think you
01:52know our sign is that you know we're hoping that he can play and see how he moves around today
01:56see
01:56if he's sore today but i thought it was a great start yesterday and uh really really uh pleased
02:01with not just what i saw on the field uh but really just the way he attacked his preparation and
02:06learning
02:06the system and the big thing that will drive this is you know his ability to communicate with
02:10you know caleb downs and and some of the safeties and things like that uh as we as we get
02:15ready to
02:15finish the prep brian schottenheimer here on 105.3 the fan coach we had steelers people on
02:20listen to their reaction as well it seems like what we've heard is that he's a great dude as well
02:26what what have you been hearing or what do you know about joey as a person well before we pulled
02:31the the the the trade before it happened uh i of course reached out to guys that played with him
02:36and of course i'm talking about george pickens i'm up roderick jones i mean both those guys thought
02:41the world of joey as a team a teammate uh the way he approaches his job um you know so
02:47again it was
02:48it was you know we do always do our homework we don't do these things off of uh you know
02:52reaction
02:53we do our our research because the locker room does matter and so uh everything that we've heard from
02:58people actually in our building that have been through the fire with him is that what you're getting
03:02is a great player who loves ball and uh he wants to win out of curiosity because you have so
03:07much on
03:08your plate how much does the head coach watch a film when it comes to a possibility or do you
03:15just
03:15kind of rely more on will and the others i would say they definitely drive it but uh again i
03:21watched
03:21a cut up that was put together by by our uh excellent scouting staff and uh again i have a
03:27little bit of
03:27awareness with certain guys because we've played them over the years we played him a couple years ago
03:32when he was really a young player uh we were in pittsburgh but uh i did blank a we call
03:36him poa tape point
03:37of attack tape where you can see him in coverage you can see him chasing guys across the field you
03:41can see him in run support so uh you definitely find windows or pockets of time to do that shoddy
03:47what kind of a you know there's always a lot of discussion about you know specifically i would
03:51guess with a lot of the concepts that you're trying to instill on defense how people fit in with a
03:55scheme it's been asked about quinnon with his play recently hey how does joey porter fit in within
04:00the scheme and how long do you think his skill set will take to project into that well again i
04:05think you
04:05know he when you're that talented and we'll talk joey you know we talk quinn as well but when you're
04:10that talented bobby there's a lot of different things that you can do with this guy uh he is a
04:15he is a press physical corner that fits in in any scheme because all of our zone schemes that you
04:21guys
04:21hear us talk about they all have match principles which means man to man so you play cover forward but
04:26it's got match principles well that's what this guy does at an elite level he puts hands on people he
04:31chases he's excellent at the top of route breaks uh at breaking on the ball and um so i think
04:36he
04:37really does fit in that but he's also a guy physically that if we want to roll up to someone
04:42let's let's talk about a guy like nico collins this week you know really good football player big
04:46physical receiver six foot four whatever 225 pounds he's got the physicality that he can get up in his
04:52face and try to disrupt timing which is what you're always trying to do from a pass coverage standpoint
04:57you know shoddy when you look at the the application of the defense because you know there
05:02was everybody seems to be pretty excited about the porter acquisition there was a couple people who
05:06were like i really wish it would have been used on pass rush i want to get after the passer
05:10that's
05:10what i want to see here can you talk a little bit about the philosophy behind the idea of sort
05:15of a
05:16top-down sort of system like you know the fangio scheme or what christian parker seems to be
05:21wanting to run basically having the secondary as your spine and the advantages or disadvantages of that
05:25yeah i think number one it's a great question uh at the end of the day we know we have
05:30to rush the
05:30quarterback better but what you're talking about is very true uh one of the ways you do rush the
05:36quarterback better is by playing tighter coverage and when you talk about top down everything that
05:41we're trying to do from this scheme historically you know whether it's vick fangio christian parker
05:46all the different guys that have taken this defense that we're running and and become coordinators
05:52in the league it starts with the secondary having disguises and everything coming out of the shell
05:57and that's creating hesitation for the quarterback and so adding a elite coverage piece like joey porter
06:03jr uh helps you do those things that that distract the quarterback they he's okay he's thinking he's
06:10going to throw a ball over here to the boundary x or to the field z whatever it is and
06:14then oh man
06:15that guy's covered and that's when the pass rush kind of uh engulfs you and so it all works together
06:21it really does as a play caller which is is tougher for you to game plan for typically when
06:26you feel like this is a team that's going to bring a lot of pressure really fast or this is
06:29a team
06:29that's going to make the quarterback have to process for three or four seconds yeah it depends
06:35and i chuckle i apologize but like uh the team we're getting ready to play they can do both man
06:40i mean
06:40they got these two freaks coming off the edge and uh will anderson and and uh daniel hunter and they've
06:45got really good corners but uh at the end of the day uh i think the system that that that
06:50we're
06:51implementing uh that we see signs of us getting better at uh is the one that just causes you
06:56problems and i say that because of the base the base three four five two whatever you want to call
07:01it the quarter shell defense and then like i said once the pass rush gets going which part of that
07:05is putting these guys into um you know into more known passing you know situations and again quite
07:11honestly i'm not making excuses there's a lot of things we we need to get better at starting with
07:15myself but at the end of the day we've played three really elite moving quarterbacks guys are athletic and
07:20uh a big part of this game is going to be trying to disrupt the timing and and affect uh
07:25cj stroud
07:25brian shottenheimer with us here on 105 through the fan shoddy do you feel like the bringing joey
07:30porter in here changes at all the way that you guys will play caleb downs or does it kind of
07:35not
07:35affect him at all uh it gives you flexibility but no i think at the end of the day it's
07:39more of the
07:40injuries that we're dealing with that can affect the way we play caleb but uh i think one of the
07:44things
07:44that we're really pleased with is how caleb has played uh in these first three games it's very very
07:49natural very comfortable for him but it does give you a little bit more flexibility to do
07:53different things with him brian shottenheimer here on sean and bobby 105 three the fan uh coach we uh
08:00we try to explain to our listeners having you on a friday is different from a monday uh we try
08:05to
08:05respect not going backwards too much but just how tough was it to get through the week i know you
08:10have your 24 hour rules after what happened in baltimore you owned it we knew that you would own it
08:14but how tough was the week for you and when did that end well you know sean i appreciate you
08:20asking
08:20and again it's real and uh look my whole thing was again at the end of the day every game
08:24whether you
08:25win whether you lose there's going to be things you did well things you didn't do very well and
08:29again i didn't finish that game very well and uh i i will always own it i'm a guy that's
08:34going to
08:34always lead from the front take the criticism that i deserve uh but it was good to get the players
08:39back it was a weird week because you know they were off monday tuesday then when they came in on
08:43wednesday you're ready to turn the page but what we did was i wanted them to see the baltimore film
08:48why we did a lot of really good things you know in all in all three phases you know the
08:54the kick
08:54coverage was great uh we got the run game going on offense i thought the defense you know the third
08:59down stuff was great so uh it was good to kind of wash that and show those guys that but
09:04also have
09:05a chance to take responsibility and look if i don't take responsibility for the things i mess up
09:09then how can i expect the team to do that so uh tough week uh but we're ready to get
09:14out there
09:14against houston and uh and go find a way to get a win we went and dug up an old
09:18ryan feeder article
09:19and he said a lot of times on game day in the moment we're kind of just going over what
09:24the coach
09:24has already decided in our prep um how accurate is that and when you're on that headset is it normally
09:32feeder coming to you first you and sorensen is it a three-way communication earlier in the week you
09:37were talking about how kellen was dealing with everyone on the headset you like to keep it quieter
09:42like how does that communication usually go yeah each situation is very different it depends on who's
09:48involved what factors is it is it involve the offense defense special teams um so it's it's it's hard to
09:54pinpoint that you know sean uh this situation was more about again like i said i got frustrated i got
10:00frustrated that uh the mindset i put back in and that led to miss miscommunication uh and something
10:06that we shouldn't have missed you know shoddy when you talked about it this week and you were
10:10you were reflective on it you said we're going to learn from this we're going to get better
10:12do you feel like it's just when you're presented with that exact same scenario again you'll have a
10:18different view of it or did this do anything at all to shift your overall philosophy about approaching
10:22later game situations yeah again i think it it makes you look at all your protocols that are in
10:27place right like that's the biggest thing okay what is the protocol uh for this situation uh what is the
10:32protocol when it's uh a decision to go for it on fourth down whether it's a decision that affects
10:37special teams how do you do that so we just kind of you know revisit our protocols uh myself and
10:43the
10:43coordinators and and of course feeder is a huge part of that and uh we feel very very comfortable that
10:47we've learned from that and uh those mistakes won't happen and again you know unfortunately this
10:52game and life is about making mistakes and uh like i said you know i i i felt uh that
10:58we did so
10:58many great things in that game and shoot i wish we would have a chance to get that thing in
11:02overtime
11:02but at the same time if i call a better play on third down uh we probably win that game
11:07how many
11:07times in your 25 years coaching a lot of quarterbacks has the quarterback totally blown off the play you
11:14gave him we've seen legendary farve stories homgren don't run don't scramble don't scramble jesse
11:20holly told a romo garrett story the other day is it a handful of times has it ever happened or
11:24they
11:24totally just went rogue uh very rarely and dak prescott never does dak's such a great competitor
11:30and he and i have such a great relationship but uh i think it's more about yeah the headset's out
11:35you know i can't hear you uh type of thing that happened from time to time uh i've definitely been
11:40screaming at some of the poor guys on the sidelines about my headset's out they're like no coach i hear
11:44you fine and i'm like okay i get you but then you kind of know how the how the quarterbacks
11:49handle
11:49the situation brian schottenheimer here on 105 through the fan every friday in the expressway
11:54can you teach us ball with the fade route a lot of back and forth over the percentages of it
12:01um
12:02why you like it why you don't like it can can you give us your thoughts on the fade route
12:06sure a lot
12:08of people say it's a 50 50 ball uh i guess i probably would understand that when you've got two
12:13elite
12:13athletes like george pickens and cd lamb uh i'd say the uh odds jump up a little bit higher for
12:19us
12:19uh because both those guys are such you know great players like uh the first touchdown or one of the
12:24early touchdowns against the giants was a fade to cd lamb um you know again i'm going to give nate
12:29wiggins some credit you know he played it pretty well the other day on the one that we had down
12:32there
12:33in the low red zone but uh we're not going to stop throwing go balls we're not going to stop
12:36throwing fades uh but the the mentality of it was it was first down uh we felt good about the
12:42run
12:43uh the single gp up there out there so we're going to take that shot you know 99 times out
12:48of 100 and
12:48uh you know if i was a betting man i'd bet on us making that play and uh more times
12:54than not i don't
12:55think i heard anyone ask you throughout the week about the opening drive and not going to javante
13:00to finish it off did you have any second thoughts about that no honestly i did i got asked about
13:05i
13:05totally understand that i really i do because we were moving the ball so well and literally that's
13:09why i kept calling runs uh i really the sequence of the red zone when we got down there was
13:13really
13:14kind of scripted how we thought it would go unfortunately they lined up wrong on the boot
13:19play that we were trying to get uh out to dax left they kind of lined up wrong so it
13:23got congested
13:24and then on third down we actually had a um you know a protection error because we did have jake
13:30ferguson coming open but uh i will say this man javante played terrific the run game was so good and
13:35and as a coach but really as a play caller um shoot that just opens up so many things for
13:39us
13:39moving forward coach we know what they did last year we know about domico and and the defensive
13:45players but they are oh and three what are some of the reasons you've seen uh as to why the
13:50texans
13:50are struggling record wise well close games i think that goes speaks to the parody of the national
13:55football league you know they they lose a one score game to indianapolis right cincinnati you know dog
14:01fight a little bit uh buffalo it's a shootout uh again so close games in parody but uh again this
14:08is maybe of all the defense we played the most talented they're a little beat up at linebacker
14:12but they've got elite players really at all three levels um you know when you talk about will
14:18anderson and and daniel hunter and sheldon rankins playing great they've got the two corners you know
14:23stingley and lassiter and you know bullocks and incredible safety al shayer i mean they just you know
14:28they're they're good and then on offense you know it runs through cj stroud we think nico collins is
14:33gonna be back uh and then i think they did a nice job going out and get david montgomery but
14:36uh they're
14:37way better than their record uh just like i think we are way better than our record and uh you're
14:42gonna see two teams very hungry to go get a win on uh on sunday you know it's shoddy when
14:46it's an
14:46uncommon opponent like houston does it at least help a little bit when it's maybe a common philosophy tree
14:52like domico ryan's where you guys have you know from that san francisco kind of outpouring you guys
14:57have gone up against that pretty frequently yeah every team you know every coordinator i should
15:02say has a fingerprint and so you put them into families fan geo family attack front family you
15:07know which is what san francisco is which is you know what tennessee is now asala things like that so
15:12it does help uh but each team also has their own spin that they put on it so you kind
15:17of have an idea
15:18going in but you know this this this defense is a team that wants to create havoc at the line
15:22of
15:23scrimmage with their front but with the way they attack uh they want to keep the ball in front of
15:26make you go the long hard way and uh they're gonna you know you know try to keep the score
15:31low
15:31and hope that they can you know find a way to score more points than you can we'll let you
15:35go
15:35with this jerry has been given his props yesterday by bobby the fan base for the aggressiveness that
15:40we've kind of been waiting for what what have you what have you been slipping in jerry's tea to to
15:45bring the gambler back out listen i said it early i'll say it again jerry and steven have been
15:51incredible through this whole process it goes back guys honestly i mean to us moving micah and all the
15:56different pieces that we've gotten in that trade and that's setting us up but again like i said
16:00we're in a win now mode and that doesn't change whether you start off the season three and over
16:04one and two like we are we're in a win now mode and um you know the gambler's ready to
16:09do work
16:09because it makes it because it makes it makes sense to help us win football games coach thanks for
16:13going backwards thanks for the explanations and the teachings as always have the good rest of your
16:18day and we'll be rooting on sunday thanks sean bobby see you guys
