00:00Our waiting lists now are 81,000 and increasing, if left, will increase beyond 100,000.
00:05Every one of those is a person waiting for justice, an individual waiting to find out what's going to happen
00:10with their lives.
00:11That is, you know, victims, witnesses, all that element.
00:15That has to be changed and the legislation we're bringing back a week on Tuesday will attack that.
00:21But it is important too, on something as fundamental as people's liberty, that the public are confident in it.
00:27You know, there was particular concern, whether it's from the public, from Parliament, from victims' advocates, around judge-only trials.
00:36You know, I as a new Justice Secretary, of course the Prime Minister, new as a Prime Minister, we said
00:41we'd look at those again.
00:42We have removed them from that package.
00:44I've been able to offset that because as a new provision that would have taken time to implement,
00:49it means I can implement the rest of the package more quickly and therefore get that backlog falling.
00:55So I think that that's found the right balance between a package that does what it has to do,
01:00which is to attack that backlog, but also one that holds the public confidence.
01:03I think as a government that listens to people, that's the way it ought to be.
