00:00Have a small bathroom with a pedestal sink and limited storage?
00:03First, I measured the distance from the edge of the toilet to the edge of the sink.
00:07I found this bathroom shelf that fit perfectly from Ikea for under $10.
00:12Next, I measured the distance from the shelf to the wall and then measured to make sure it wasn't too
00:17cramped over the toilet.
00:18Then, I took my measurements to Home Depot and had them cut two pieces of wood.
00:22Next, I sanded and stained my wood.
00:25After it was dry, I sealed it with polyurethane to protect it from water spills.
00:29Next, I installed brackets into the wood and attached it to the wall.
00:32I never thought my tiny bathroom could ever be this organized.
00:36I now have easy access to everything and my mornings just became almost stress-free.
00:42For today's project, I wanted to run down to Michael's and grab two of their crates.
00:45I want to put the two of them together, but when I hang them on the wall, I don't want
00:49them to look like crates.
00:50So what I'm going to do is take off some of the slats.
00:52Now, they are kind of gentle, so you want to be careful when you're pulling them up.
00:55Just use a screwdriver to pull them apart on one end and then just work your way on each side
01:01back and forth and pull up the other slats.
01:04I'm going to do this on one of each side and I'm going to do it on the back and
01:08take away half of the back slats.
01:11That way, it gives it more of an open look.
01:13Now, I need to join the two together, so the best thing to do is wood glue.
01:17I'm going to go ahead and spread it out along the two slats on each side that's still there and
01:22then use my finger to rub it out.
01:24You want to make sure that you spread it out because the glue then can drip when you join it
01:27together.
01:28Once I got it all settled, I'm going to join the two crates together, but there might be a gap.
01:33So, I'm just going to grab some clamps and put them together.
01:36That will hold it and then I want to use a pin nailer and drive some pins right into the
01:41slats.
01:42They're really small and it's hard to see, especially once we stain it.
01:45Again, grab some glue and I'm going to put those slats that I pulled off and remove the staples and
01:50put them on the front.
01:51I'm going to spread them just even enough that I could put some towels in there.
01:55Once I get the first slat put on, I'm going to go ahead and put the next one on also.
02:00Again, using my pin nailer just to hold it in place until the glue dries.
02:03Then it's time to go ahead and put some shelves in.
02:06The first thing I'm going to do though is go ahead and put a runner down the side with more
02:12of the wood that I put apart and pin nail that into place.
02:15Once I get that done, then I can put one on the back and then start building my shelf.
02:20It's again back to the saw and I'm going to cut them to equal length.
02:24I have enough to put four of these on.
02:26So, I'm going to space them as evenly as I can using the pin nailer to put them back in
02:30place again.
02:31Once I get all these shelves on, it's going to really start looking good.
02:34And it gives it kind of a better look than just putting two crates together.
02:39Once I get that shelf together, then I've got to put a hook on the back, two of them, to
02:43hang it from.
02:44A pitcher hook will do just great and I get it nailed in.
02:48Once that's done, I'm going to grab my favorite wood stain, which is walnut.
02:51And I'm going to go ahead and just start spreading it out.
02:54Now, I don't use a brush.
02:55I do use a towel because I feel like I can get some better penetration with it.
02:59Once I get it all smoothed out, and I've got to make sure also that I don't put too much
03:04on.
03:04If I do, I can always wipe off the excess.
03:07But using a towel, it's really good because look at that grain.
03:10It's just really starting to pop.
03:11Now, once I get the stain on and I let it dry, it's time to put it on the wall
03:16and decorate it.
03:17And it just fit perfectly right where I need it in the guest bathroom.
03:21I think it turned out amazing.
03:24And it's nice to have a shelf and place to put the towels.
03:28I absolutely love this project.
03:29It was simple to do and inexpensive.
03:31I hope this inspired you to use your own Michael crates to make your own wall decor.
03:37I have this small 24-inch wide sink that really doesn't allow me to fit much on its surface at
03:42all.
03:43So I ran to the hardware store and picked up some wood.
03:45Once I got home, I determined how high I wanted my shelf to be.
03:48I have a pretty high faucet, so I needed to make mine pretty tall.
03:52You'll adjust yours to the height that's appropriate for you.
03:54I cut my wood to the appropriate length.
03:57Then, I simply placed the two pieces of wood together using an L-bracket.
04:01I didn't want the rough edge of the wood to show on top of my shelf, so I made sure
04:05to attach the L-bracket in a way that the rough edge stayed underneath the top part of the shelf.
04:10I set it into place and started playing around with how I wanted to organize my things on this new
04:15shelf.
04:16Today, we are going to make a two-tier accessory storage tray, which is perfect for your bathroom.
04:22And we're going to use these affirmation boards that I got at the dollar store, so it's really inexpensive.
04:28We're going to grab some paint, and I'm using chalk paint, and I love chalk paint because you don't have
04:33to prep anything.
04:34You're going to want to put at least two coats on all your boards, and then we're going to let
04:39one side dry, and that didn't take very long,
04:42and then we're going to paint the inside of each one of these signs.
04:47Next, you're going to put together your two tiers.
04:52So grab your hot glue, or you can use liquid nails, and you're going to take the smaller square and
05:00add that on either side of your top tray.
05:03And it doesn't matter what you have. You may find a rectangle. You may have a square. I just happen
05:08to find squares.
05:09Next, I grab a small wood sign, and that's going to be like a little tray that fits under our
05:16other tier.
05:17You can use whatever you want to line your tray, but I happen to have some cane from another DIY
05:23project, and I cut that to fit.
05:26But you can use whatever you want in your tray, like scrapbook paper, or fabric, or some wallpaper. It's really
05:32whatever is your style.
05:34Next, I added a bead of glue with my hot glue gun, and because the cane is much thicker than,
05:40like, say, paper or cloth,
05:43I used a glue gun, as opposed to Mod Podge, or some other glue adhesive.
05:48And I put that in there, and made sure that was snug.
05:51And because this cane is so thick, I needed to make sure it was secure in the center.
05:57So I grabbed my glue gun, and put a little bead underneath the holes.
06:02And a trick I use is I take a glue stick to hold it down.
06:05Now we're going to make the finished edge a little more refined by grabbing some jute.
06:12You can use twine, you can use ribbon, whatever you want.
06:15But we are going to put that all around the perimeter of the rattan to make it look more finished.
06:21And I just grabbed my hot glue.
06:23I added the jute throughout the bottom, and just did that all the way around until I got to the
06:29other side.
06:30And again, you can use whatever you want for your trim, whatever is your style.
06:34Now it's time to do the top tray, and we're going to do this one a little different.
06:38We're going to use some scrapbook paper.
06:40So grab some Mod Podge and a sponge brush, and put a thin layer along the bottom.
06:47And then grab some scrap paper.
06:49I used something that was like a map.
06:53I thought it looked so cute, it looked very worldly, and I loved the whole vibe of it.
06:59And then smooth that down, and then to make it cohesive with the bottom tray,
07:03we're going to put the lining on the edge of the jute as well.
07:08Which really makes this look so finished and refined, and it adds just a little extra detail.
07:15And again, you can use whatever you want, whatever is your style.
07:18A ribbon would look really pretty, even like a little bit of rhinestones, whatever is your style.
07:25And just put that all the way around.
07:28And remember the trick I had with the glue stick, so you don't burn your fingers.
07:32You can do the same thing on this part.
07:36Before we add our final details, you're going to want to seal your entire tray,
07:41and the bottom tray, by using an acrylic sealer.
07:46Then we are going to grab two brass handles, and we're going to glue those to each side.
07:53Now you don't have to do this part, but I thought it made it look really finished and high-end
07:58looking.
07:58And again, I used the hot glue, which is the Gorilla Glue, which I totally love.
08:02And we're going to do that on both sides.
08:04And after we do that, we are ready to style this adorable two-tier tray.
08:10Are you ready to see the finished piece?
08:12This turned out so beautiful.
08:15It literally is better than I had imagined when I was coming up with the idea,
08:20and I was in the dollar store looking at these wood pieces.
08:25It's two-tiered stand.
08:27It's a perfect place to keep accessories and small items.
08:30You can put jewelry in here.
08:31You can put your lotions.
08:32I put my hair oil and face oil and some crystals
08:37and a few of my favorite things that I use in my bath every day.
08:41And I just love it.
08:43I hope you guys loved today's DIY, and until next time.
