Hedge fund manager Bill Perkins isn’t planning to leave an inheritance to his children. He tells Fortune and Ellie Austin that other parents should consider doing the same.

00:00If you're going to leave an inheritance to your kids, separate it, put it in their trust,
00:04give them control of it, between the ages of 28 and 33,
00:08the reason why is that your brain reaches peak mental acuity at 28, on average,
00:13and you're in decline and plateau starting at 33.
00:16From that age onward, the utility of money starts to decline,
00:19and the seasons of your life start to pass you by,
00:21and so if you live a nice, long, healthy life,
00:24when you're ready to give the money to the kids, they're not kids anymore.
00:26Two-thirds of their life to 70% of their life has already passed them by.
00:30That is not really thinking about your kids.
00:32That's kind of like an autopilot decision that's been passed down for generation to generation.
