How do you attack a fortress sitting on top of a massive cliff?

At Masada, the Roman army solved the problem through engineering. During the siege in approximately 72–73 CE, Roman forces constructed a huge assault ramp against the western side of the fortress, creating a route for siege machinery to reach the defenses.
