Ted Karras on Bengals' O-line, Mindset in run game and the need for a win
Transcript
00:002-0 to 0-2 obviously doesn't feel very good.
00:03I would say that game was well below our standard as an offensive line.
00:11So, yeah, no, we've got to learn from it and get better and win in Miami here,
00:15going to the bye 3-2.
00:16What didn't you like about the offensive line play?
00:18I didn't think we passed off stunts very well.
00:22I think we gave up way too many hits.
00:25I think everyone took a turn doing something that equated to 17 points,
00:29which isn't going to get it done.
00:30I think our defense gave us a winning effort, 22 points against the Jags.
00:34Should come out of there with a win.
00:35And ultimately ended up coming, what, six inches short on fourth and 10.
00:43You know, it just wasn't our best.
00:4623 yards on 15 carries, Ted.
00:49How do you guys go about fixing that?
00:50Yeah, I think we've got to do a better job with communication.
00:54That starts with me up front.
00:57I think that game just declared to what it was, you know,
01:01turning into a 400-yard passing game.
01:07Again, I don't want it to, you know, what we communicated to the guys today.
01:11You know, we did have a chance to win at the end,
01:13and that would have, you know, maybe covered up some of this stuff.
01:19But as a unit, we felt that this was well below our standard,
01:22and we need to get better.
01:25Obviously, as an offensive lineman, you want to win up front.
01:28You want to win one-on-one battles.
01:29How is a line, and even yourself personally,
01:32do you feel you guys are doing winning one-on-one battles?
01:36Not good enough yesterday, for sure.
01:40I think we just need to get ourselves back, wake up.
01:45I mean, this is – it doesn't feel like it was a crazy game
01:49just because we had a chance to win.
01:51But I have a pit in my stomach similar to Minnesota last year
01:55as an offensive line.
01:56That was not very good.
02:00Is it maybe good that some of that stuff doesn't get covered up
02:02and you all were able to go and attack that maybe in a different way
02:05had you guys won?
02:07Well, I always take a win.
02:08Right, right.
02:08But I think it was just a very honest and brutal Monday,
02:15which we deserved.
02:17What does that entail?
02:18Just, I mean, going over everything we did.
02:21I think everyone down the line, all five of us,
02:27aren't feeling very good today.
02:28And everyone was honest, and we were honest with ourselves.
02:32Going into the second quarter of the season here, let's go.
02:35I know it's not your position to make any announcements about Jamar and T's health,
02:40but if they do miss any time, what is your message as a vocal leader in this locker room to
02:45the team?
02:46We got a great room there, and I'm sure those guys are going to be fighting as much as they
02:49can to be back.
02:50And as we saw in the second half of the game, Mitch and Dante really stepped up.
02:56Obviously, we have Mike.
02:57We have one of the deepest receiver rooms probably in history,
03:01but I know those guys will be fighting to get back.
03:04And so we've got to do whatever we can to get a win right now.
03:07Do you buy into the significance of identity, teams forming their identity,
03:11whether it's in the trenches, on the edge, perimeter skill, coaching?
03:15Do you buy into that?
03:17I think that you are who you show up on tape.
03:21So, you know, I wouldn't say our identity is great O-line play from week four,
03:26but we've done a lot of good stuff this year, and there was some positive stuff there,
03:31but scored 17 points, not going to get it done in the NFL,
03:33even if your defense is holding a pretty dynamic offense to 22 points.
03:39You guys.
03:42Hob always right at the end, at the buzzer.
03:46I mean, you can wave it off.
03:47No.
03:48You guys committed to it, and you guys committed to it on this side,
03:51but really massively in the offseason.
03:54Is that still kind of taking shape, do you think?
03:57I think we're still – I mean, so usually week four is at the end of September.
04:01September football is over, so we're going to start declaring who we are.
04:06And I love what Pitt said at the beginning of the year.
04:08You know, we can be whoever we need to be to win a football game.
04:11Had a chance, airing it out.
04:12Obviously, we have the best QB and receivers in the world.
04:16So, no, we're just going to have to keep running.
04:19We've got to get back to practice.
04:21We've got to go to South Florida and get a win for the bye.
04:23What is your identity, do you think, going into week five?
04:27What do you think of your identity?
04:28Our identity is two and two.
04:29Not good enough with a chance to get a winning record going into the break.
