Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by the Delhi Police following a nine-hour dharna at Akashvani Bhavan. Protesting members of Parliament were demanding a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner. According to the Election Commission, no appointment was sought prior to 4:00 PM, and a subsequent request to meet 240 MPs at the Parliament Annexe was deemed unusual given the venue. Following unsuccessful communication coordinated by the Deputy Commissioner of Police New Delhi between the protesting leaders and the Election Commission, police personnel intervened to clear the protest site and maintain law and order. Both leaders, alongside several other members of Parliament, were placed into separate police buses and transported towards Kingsway Camp.

00:00But the big story that we are breaking and the visuals that we want to bring you, Rahul Gandhi and
00:04Priyanka Gandhi-Wadra have been detained by the Delhi police after nine hours of a dharma. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka
00:12Gandhi-Wadra are detained by the police.
00:15Gandhi is forcibly dragged out of the protest site. Gandhi's were demanding a meet with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar
00:24and were on a dharma at Akashwani Bhavan.
00:27EC has clarified, says no appointment was sought before 4pm. EC says requests came to meet 240 MPs at Parliament
00:35Annex. EC considered the meet request unusual due to the venue.
00:39So clearly those visuals that you can see and that is the bus that is taking the MPs now to
00:45Kingsway camp where they have been detained for now and are expected to be released shortly afterwards.
00:51But Rahul Gandhi on the right being taken away by the police after having spent nine hours at that dharma
00:59site.
00:59Those are the visuals that have come in. His sister Priyanka Gandhi-Wadra was there along with congressmen on the
01:06side.
01:07Moshmi Singh and Shriya Chhattaji are now joining us. Moshmi, to you first.
01:12Rahul Gandhi, we have been told, has been taken to the Kingsway camp along with about at least two dozen
01:18other MPs.
01:19Can you give us more details?
01:24That's right, Rajdeep. We were trying to chase the bus. We lost him midway. He's about 200 metres, 300 metres
01:32away in this Jhandewala stretch.
01:36And the other leaders who are there with him tell me that he is being frisked away to Kingsway camp.
01:42Now, this has been a long haul throughout the day. It started at 11 a.m. Around 1 p.m.,
01:49Rahul Gandhi sat, went back to Akashwani and sat there on a dharma.
01:54And we've seen, we are also told that Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have been split in different buses because
02:01that's been a part of the strategy of the Delhi police.
02:03But all day long, we saw a sit-in protest under a tree, gaddas and mattresses and bedsheets being brought
02:12in, talks about subcommunication and mediation between the top cops and the Congress leaders there over a meeting with the
02:23CEC and the EC.
02:24But Rahul Gandhi has been adamant on that one.
02:27And then very quickly, I think, within 10 minutes, Rajdeep, I was right there. The Delhi police moved in really
02:34fast to frisk away Rahul Gandhi, detained Priyanka Gandhi there.
02:39Even I saw Rahul Gandhi resisting that a lot. He fell on the ground and then was using his techniques
02:46to not be detained.
02:48So he resisted for quite a while where we had dozens of cops putting him in that bus.
02:54So it's been a long haul throughout the day.
02:57Okay, so he's on his way to Kingsway camp. You're saying they're in separate buses.
03:01Shriya Chatterjee, give us more details that you're picking up. What is Delhi police's strategy now?
03:07They were very swift as Moshmi just reported to whisk them away.
03:13But clearly, they are very careful to ensure that there are no, that since these are MPs, there is no
03:20question of creating any situation between the MPs and the police.
03:28Well, absolutely, Rajdeep. And you know, swift, yes, but also after eight to nine long hours, they were allowed to
03:34sit inside Akash Vani Bhavan.
03:36Now, two press releases have dropped right now, Rajdeep. One from the election commission, the second from the Delhi police.
03:42To sum up what really transpired, because I was there the whole day. I saw the DCP New Delhi coordinate
03:48this.
03:49It was he who was talking to Priyanka Gandhi. The request went in from Rahul Gandhi that he wants to
03:55meet the election commissioner along with 200 MPs at the parliament annex.
04:00Now, this was turned down by the election commission saying that this is an unusual protocol.
04:05There is a proper method in which you can take permission. They also said that if need be, where the
04:12protesters are protesting, one of the representatives from the election commission can go and meet the protesters.
04:18But even that was turned down. So all these transpired since that eight to nine long hours.
04:23And when finally, the Delhi police could not make any headway communicating between Rahul Gandhi and the election commission, they
04:31have mentioned it in their press release that in order to maintain law and order, we had to take action.
04:37So, yes, there was a strategy on the ground to ensure utmost patience is maintained while tackling because they are
04:45member of parliament.
04:46They've learned a lesson from the last time Rahul Gandhi protested outside the PM house.
04:52So clearly, there was a wait and watch procedure, but there was also a to and fro communication that was
04:57being done by the DCP New Delhi between Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and the election commission when that did not
05:04happen.
05:04At 8 PM, they were detained.
