00:00Coach, Bernie Kosar said this about today's game,
00:03and you said this, that today you look at the talent
00:06at the quarterback position,
00:07but Bernie said this about understanding defenses.
00:10He said, you know, when he quarterbacked,
00:12he didn't have a bug in his ear.
00:15He didn't have anybody telling him all the way up until 15 seconds
00:19where the play caller is not in his ear any longer.
00:22He had to dissect when he got to the line of scrimmage
00:25and understood defenses.
00:27He had to process, find the landmarks.
00:29He said, one of the things with today's guys,
00:31technology has actually hurt the development of seeing defenses
00:36because back in those guys' day,
00:38they got to the line of scrimmage, Coach.
00:40Hey, they had to know where to throw the ball.
00:42They weren't told where to throw the ball.
00:44You think that's one of the things that maybe, again,
00:47in today's game is a little bit that's missing
00:49when it comes to these players coming out of college?
00:52Yeah, I think parts of it,
00:54if the West Coast offense is different than, you know,
00:57I coached with Joe Pendry and Howard Mudd,
00:59the guys that coached Bernie up in Cleveland with Marty
01:01when we all went out to Kansas City together.
01:04And I know that offense.
01:05And yeah, Steve DeBerg was the perfect fit for us too
01:08because they had audibles.
01:10They saw certain coverages.
01:11They checked to certain plays.
01:12And they don't do that anymore.
01:17They're just robots a little bit too much.
01:19And the West Coast was one, two, three, takeoff.
01:23Steve Young made it famous.
01:26Then, obviously, the zone blitz took care of Steve Young
01:29and a bunch of other guys.
01:30It's changed the whole game.
01:32You know, you send a guy in motion,
01:33oh, I know the coverage.
01:35Not necessarily anymore.
01:36You know, there's a thousand ways to try to figure out now
01:39if it's man or zone.
01:40And the quarterbacks were doing so much to help them.
01:43But everything's pre-snap.
01:45Very few play post-snap anymore.
01:49Coach, for you, a couple questions here, Coach, for you.
01:52What was more of an influence with you,
01:54coaching with Coach Bryant
01:55or working in a Steeler organization
01:57with that phenomenal, great environment,
02:01working in Pittsburgh?
02:04Oh, I say Coach Bryant.
02:06Every day was learning a lesson.
02:07I was young, cocky, thought I knew everything.
02:09And he ripped my ass every day.
02:12And at the end of that season, he said,
02:17so you got an interview.
02:18I said, yeah, Coach Temple.
02:20He said, you get to the finals, you'll get the job.
02:23You're ready.
02:25And it was all because of his teaching me
02:28the two years I did not know everything I thought I knew.
02:32But unbelievable, man.
02:34People don't realize Coach Bryant
02:37substituted every player that went every game,
02:39all the way to the Liberty Bowl.
02:40All the way to the Liberty Bowl.
