Judo: Japan crowns two new world champions in Baku

Akari Omori claimed her first world title at -57kg, defeating reigning champion Eteri Liparteliani in golden score. At -73kg, Ryuga Tanaka overcame Makhmadbek Makhmadbekov in a tight final to secure gold and complete a double triumph for Japan.

00:00It's day three of the 2026 World Championships here in Baku.
00:06International Judo Federation President Mr. Marius Vizia and CEO of CBH Bank, Mr. Simon Ben-Hamou, signed a sponsorship agreement.
00:14And an MOU was signed between the IJF General Treasurer Dr. Nasser Altamimi and the International Police Sports Union Secretary
00:20General Gonzalo Londono.
00:23As the National Gymnastics Arena filled, fans were treated to the chance to meet some of their judo heroes, before
00:29settling in for another fantastic day of competition.
00:32Current world champion Itiri Lippatiliani made it to the final once again at under 57kg.
00:39Lippatiliani provided some of the highlight throws of the day.
00:44Trying to take the title was Japan's Akari Omori.
00:49Throughout the prelims, Omori showed how dangerous she can be, in standing and groundwork.
00:55Her toughest fight came from teammate Momo Tamaoki.
00:59A huge victory on the road to the final.
01:02In a tense final that entered gold and score, Omori showed her dominance on the ground.
01:08Successfully turning over and holding down the current world champion to take the title.
01:17When I was fighting, the support for Lippatiliani was so loud it was all I could hear.
01:22The atmosphere was incredible.
01:24I was determined to win, even if it meant disappointing the crowd.
01:31CBH Bank CEO Mr. Simon Benhamou awarded the medals.
01:38At under 73kg, Tanaka Ryuga had a tough draw.
01:43But after successfully defeating the category's top seed,
01:48a Wazari score in the semi-final put him in contention for gold.
01:56World No. 3 Mahmoudbek Mahmoudbekov of the UAE already has a world bronze.
02:01And today, he was hoping to finally take the top spot.
02:05A fantastic display of skill and power in the preliminaries made that look possible.
02:14The final was another close battle, with just a single score enough to take the victory.
02:20It was Tanaka who struck the winning blow.
02:23An incredible, driving Ouchigari, taking down Mahmoudbekov for a yuko score.

02:35I think it's wonderful to see judo spreading not just in Japan, but all around the world.
