According to Rich, the Red Sox are the on;y local team whose identity is known: They’ll make the playoffs and never get out of the Wild Card round. As for the other three teams, who are they? Championship contenders? Teams that barely make the playoffs? Teams that will miss the playoffs? The guys discuss.

00:00I was thinking about this earlier.
00:03So we know who the Red Sox are.
00:05The Red Sox are going to be a team that next season is going to make the playoffs
00:09and lose in the first round.
00:10That's just who they are.
00:11It's in their DNA.
00:12That's now like nothing that they said in that press conference made me think
00:15that they're going to do anything different than what they got.
00:18They're going to be just good enough.
00:19Asterisk, depending salary cap.
00:22If there's a salary cap, I believe that's good for the team,
00:25and they may rise a level to a limited second round.
00:28You know what?
00:29Somehow they're still going to find a way to just make the playoffs
00:32and then lose in an embarrassing fashion.
00:35But when I look at the other three teams, think about it.
00:38Back when Tom Brady was here, Ted, you knew who the Patriots were.
00:42They were a team that was always in it.
00:44That team was every single year you knew that they had a chance to win a Super Bowl.
00:49When David Ortiz was a member of the Boston Red Sox,
00:53you looked at that team and you're like, dude, every year you knew that your team
00:57had a chance.
00:57Yeah, the regular season was like, eh, it's the regular season.
01:00Let's see what they do in the playoffs, because you knew they were going to the playoffs every year.
01:02Even the Bruins.
01:04Like when you had Chara and you had Patrice Bergeron, they had championship DNA there,
01:09and you knew that they had a fighting chance to do something in the playoffs.
01:13I don't know who any of those three teams are right now.
01:16Like, could any of you with 100% certainty predict the outcome of the season for the Patriots this year,
01:25the Celtics for this year, or the Bruins for this year?
01:29I think the Celtics and Bruins, we can fairly well say how it's going to go.
01:33Both, to me, are playoff teams that are not going to end in championships.
01:36Do you hold out some kind of different opinion?
01:39The Bruins are confusing, because it's like there's a whole new youth movement.
01:44They can't score.
01:45I know it's only a couple games.
01:47I don't know how good of a leader David Posternak is.
01:50I still have questions about Marco Sturm.
01:53But you know what?
01:54On paper, they got a bunch of decent...
01:57I mean, Posternak's one of the best scorers in the game.
01:58He's just not scoring right now.
02:00Maybe he could all of a sudden turn on.
02:03And there's a decent chance that they could turn into something.
02:06But right now, they don't look like anything.
02:07So I don't know what they are.
02:08I have no clue.
02:10You could tell me that they were going to be five, ten points out of the playoffs,
02:15or you could tell me that they're going to go to the second or third round.
02:17And I go, okay.
02:18I don't know.
02:19The Celtics, that's a huge question mark.
02:22I think we...
02:23Okay.
02:23They could either be the fourth or fifth best team in the East,
02:28or Jason Tatum could ascend and be an MVP candidate.
02:34And by the way, I think that there's a chance that he could be up for MVP
02:36because that's what happens when you're the lone star on your team.
02:39So there's a chance that he might end up taking that team.
02:42And they could end up being the best team in the East.
02:45Because I don't believe in the Sixers anymore.
02:47I think there's too much chaos there already with LeBron James.
02:50And the Knicks, listen, who knows?
02:53Who knows what's going to happen?
02:54Knicks have some chaos.
02:55They do have some chaos.
02:55Some legit, like, contract future chaos.
02:57And even the Sixers.
02:58Do you hear some of the scuttlebutt with the Sixers?
03:01Yeah.
03:02LeBron's not...
03:02Joel Embiid shows up late for a practice.
03:04Oh, did he?
03:05Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:06I guess he has a history of showing up late.
03:07And LeBron got...
03:08Just to your point about LeBron, he's called him out for that.
03:12Now, when they asked LeBron, they say,
03:14oh, no, no, we don't have a problem.
03:15But the report was that Embiid was late and that LeBron got all over him.
03:19So, you know.
03:20But here's what I think.
03:21I think the Red Sox and the Celtics, I think I know exactly what they are.
03:26They are a team that's going to get into the playoffs.
03:30You know, maybe the Celtics not barely because the East, I don't think,
03:34is as strong as the West.
03:36But they're both driven by analytics.
03:38So they're going to be good regular season teams.
03:41And they get to the playoffs.
03:42And what have they done in the playoffs?
03:43Missing that feel for the playoffs.
03:45They just can't...
03:46The analytics don't transfer to the playoffs.
03:47And both teams rely heavily on the analytics,
03:50both in the regular season and stupidly in the postseason.
03:54That's a good point.
03:54I mean, there is a little bit of a comparison between the two.
03:57The only thing I will say is that the Celtics have more legitimate talent
03:59than the Red Sox.
04:01That can ascend them a little bit over.
04:02I keep using the word ascend.
04:03It's a stupid word.
04:04It's kind of a douchey word.
04:05And then they let the analytics get in the way.
04:06You're probably right.
04:07You're probably right.
04:08Whereas if you let these guys just play,
04:12maybe, just maybe,
04:13they would end up giving you a better result.
04:15Now, that's a great point.
04:18The Patriots, I don't know what they are.
04:20Do any of us know what they are this season?
04:22We just saw three most dog crap games that you could see a team play.
04:26And then one game where they looked like they could win a Super Bowl.
04:29And people are downplaying that win.
04:31A lot of people.
04:31The national media is very confused.
04:32It's crazy.
04:33So it's hard.
04:34So now it's all the coaches suck for the Bills.
04:36They didn't even game plan for the Patriots.
04:38So we're not supposed to take anything away from this Bills victory,
04:43which I feel like the defense is close to being as legit as the stats would indicate.
04:51I still am a little bit nervous about that.
04:54And I just, can we see some consistent play out of the quarterback
04:58before we start saying they're totally back?
05:02I would say the Patriots are legit contenders.
05:04I believe they have righted the ship.
05:07It feels very much like last year.
05:08I feel like maybe it's just coincidence it was the Bills both times that kind of jump-started them.
05:13And last year they did have that Carolina win to kind of really kick it off, the blowout.
05:17The week before they played the Bills.
05:18Yeah, doesn't it feel just like last year?
05:20And I feel like that's going to come right back.
05:22That win Sunday was so huge.
05:24I think the Patriots are legit contenders.
05:26Celtics are very fringe contenders.
05:30Bruins are just not really contenders.
05:32I mean, they're just hanging around.
05:33They're like ACDC.
05:34They're just kind of, they're solid.
05:36You know, they're tough.
05:36They're old.
05:37They're like ACDC.
05:37They're like, all right.
05:38Yeah.
05:38I don't mind seeing them, but we know they're limited at this point.
05:41If I had to give you like my confidence level in all three, if I had to rank my confidence
05:46level,
05:46I would put my confidence actually number one with the Celtics.
05:49Really?
05:49Yep.
05:50I do.
05:50Because I, listen, I think that Jason Tatum is-
05:53They have two stars.
05:54Now they have one star.
05:55I just think simplifying the offense.
05:57They're close.
05:57They're bonded.
05:58They've been hanging out.
05:59They're best friends now.
06:00They're all the same thing.
06:02There's alignment.
06:03Is there a little ex-girlfriend thing going on with the Celtics?
06:07Like, you know, like you break up with your girlfriend and like, you know, Jalen Brown's
06:10over here.
06:10And all of a sudden you got revenge bod.
06:12Look at how great things are now.
06:14You're posting things on Instagram.
06:15You're going on vacations to the Citadel together and you're hanging out.
06:18This is what real leadership and friendship is like.
06:21I mean, the Celtics-
06:22They're doing things they had never done before.
06:24Never.
06:24And they're doing it publicly and it's for one.
06:27It's almost for an audience of one.
06:28It's for Jalen Brown.
06:30Look at you, Jalen Brown.
06:32You are the turd in the punch bowl.
06:33And now all of a sudden we're sitting here having the best time and we're friends and
06:37everyone's getting along.
06:38And I just think that it's like, it just feels like an ex-girlfriend posting on Instagram
06:43the way the Celtics are going about themselves.
06:45But it doesn't mean that they're not going to be a very good team.
06:48I think that you're going to simplify the offense.
06:50I think it's all going to run through.
06:52You may be right.
06:53Celtics are kind of like Journey without Steve Perry.
06:56They're just, you know, they're the Filipino Journey.
06:58Did you just feel a Steve Perry, Jalen Brown?
07:01Yes.
07:02Yes.
07:02They lost a Finals MVP.
07:05Now you still want to see Journey.
07:06They're still quality.
07:07But they're just not quite what they were.
07:09Jalen Brown is a better basketball player than Jason Tatum.
07:11I didn't say that.
07:11That's what Ken is saying.
07:12I said 1A and 1B.
07:13Steve Perry is legitimately one of the greatest singers in all of rock music.
07:18Yeah.
07:18And you are saying that that's Jalen Brown.
07:20Wow.
07:22I don't know about that.
07:23Patriots are like Foo Fighters.
07:24They're really good.
07:25They're still Blue Blood's good.
07:27Dave Grohl had some off-field drama like Vrabel did.
07:30But they're fine.
07:30They're still really good.
07:32The Patriots are the Foo Fighters.
07:33Yeah.
07:33That's my band comment.
07:35Okay.
07:35You know what?
07:36The David Grohl, Mike Vrabel thing does actually compare.
07:39It does.
07:40There's a good comment.
07:41They're still legit.
07:42But the Foo Fighters.
07:42Still in their prime.
07:43No, they're not.
07:44They haven't made a good album in years.
07:47Foo Fighters.
07:47It doesn't matter.
07:48There's still a lot of hits.
07:49Since the color and the shape, they really haven't done much.
07:51They made one album that's like the greatest.
07:54And then the rest of us is kind of all right.
07:55All right to bad, to be quite honest.
07:58So maybe I'll give them a little bit of a bounce up.
08:00But I do like the Dave Grohl comparison.
08:02All right.
08:02It just occurred to me.
08:04There's three teams I have no idea where they're going.
08:05You're right.
08:06About the Patriots, you hear it like the national press.
08:08And it's just every – you'd have one guy say they're back,
08:11and then somebody else says, no, I don't believe it.
08:13So they're very confusing right now.
08:14No doubt.
08:15All right, 617-779-7937.
08:17By the way, someone said they're all young teams.
08:19Genius.
08:19Celtics aren't young.
08:20That's not a young team.
08:22They got one of the oldest guys in the league playing on their team right now.
08:24I mean, they have Ugo, who they kept around because Giannis,
08:28you know, they didn't want to give him up for Giannis.
08:30They got old man Mike Conley over there.
08:31I mean, listen, they got old dudes.
08:33They got Paul Jordan.
08:34That's not an old team.
08:35That's not a young team.
08:37Bruins are.
08:37All right, 617-779-7937.
08:39So –
