00:25As we forget how fragile we are
00:30Three years ago, on the Simchat Torah, the Jewish people suffered the deadliest day since the Holocaust.
00:39Over 1,300 people were murdered, 251 taken into Gaza's hostages, thousands wounded, 40 children were murdered.
00:53Behind every one of those numbers is a name, a face and a family.
01:00But since then, targeted evil and hate has come closer to home than we could ever have imagined.
01:08We had that summer of terror.
01:10Our community woke up again and again to graffiti, vandalism, fire bombings, homes, cars, businesses, places of worship, a childcare
01:19centre.
01:21And again, I went to each site because I wanted to bear witness.
01:26Many people who turned up here had trepidation about even coming.
01:30And we didn't know where the venue was going to be for security reasons.
01:37We found out at 10 o'clock last night.
01:40Thank goodness it was held in this sheltered courtyard.
01:44Whereas last year, we were up at North Bondi Surf Club on the grass having this very same commemoration.
01:52And where were you in December when you did that?
01:57In December, my husband and I were watching, in Bondi Junction cinemas, the movie Nuremberg, which was very confronting in
02:07itself.
02:07As Jews and as, I guess, just human beings knowing, going through what went through the Nuremberg trials, almost.
02:17And we could feel in our silent mobile phones, buzzing, buzzing, continuous buzzing.
02:24And when the movie finished, we walked out into the foyer and we said to ourselves,
02:31well, at least we're here in Australia, you know, it will never happen again.
02:39And the first message we saw that there was an attack on Jews right here, only two kilometres away.
02:48And we went home and forever, you know, our lives here in Sydney have changed.
